Lightning Strike (Dorothy Dennehy, PI) Paperback – May 11, 2019

4.2 out of 5 stars 5 ratings

Private Investigator Dorothy Dennehy and her new business and life partner, Paul Webster, are about to leave Portland, Oregon, for a private investigator conference in New York. However, before they can leave, Paul is murdered—apparently, the victim of a mugging gone wrong, it’s assumed, because an expensive diamond ring was stolen from him. No witnesses are found for the crime, and the Portland Police detective in charge, Michael D’Amico, seems to feel Dorothy is the prime suspect. As Dorothy and her team search for clues to clear her name, dark secrets are revealed about Paul’s mysterious past. But the closer Dorothy gets to the truth, the more likely she is to become the next victim.

Lightning Strike is the perfect title for this sequel to A Silk Shroud. The opening scene is a shocker, and PI Dorothy and her team set out to find the killer of one of their own. The story is well-written in the classic “whodunit” style as the team work through their grief and anger, sifting through a long list of suspects to find the guilty party. I thought I had the right person nailed, but I was wrong. I look forward to reading further adventures of this close-knit group of unique characters.

Enjoyed this very much. Great how it all opens up revealing untold secrets. I did guess the killer although was confused enough to wonder why I suspected them. Love the antagonising ending, hinting at more DD stories.

3.0 out of 5 stars I Enjoyed This Quite Good Read by a New To Me Canadian Author
Reviewed in Canada on March 29, 2020
I read this book in my project to read as many of the 2020 Arthur Ellis awards nominees, that appeal to me, that I can before the Shortlists are announced on Apr 15 2020. So, again, I broke a couple of my rules as I am usually reluctant to pay for a book by an author whose work I have never read but at $4.00 the price wasn’t going to bankrupt me so I jumped in to the series at book 2, without having read book 1, but it turned out to be a good enough read that I will probably read more of the series after my ArthurEllis reading is finished. The story line of D’Amico, the sexist tunnel visioned old line Police Detective, is not new or unique as it has been done many times before with some possibly better than this but in this book it at least ends satisfactorily. There are enough clues provided so that the murder or accidental death of Paul would have been solved a lot sooner except for D’Amico’s fixation. Dorothy is a fine and smart character with some great friends but really got a bit of coincidental help in identifying the perp. One thing I personally do not like too much in a mystery is having the culprit die by some means like falling of a cliff and never being brought to justice as happens here in the quite tense ending scene. This, along with the old no cell phone coverage trope which is grossly overworked in many contemporary crime novels, is my excuse for downgrading this quite good read by 1 star. Overall, though, an enjoyable read.
