Love Notes: Inspired by Jane Austen's Sense & Sensibility (The Austens Series Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 1,077 ratings

Greg Brandon is just a friend.

I’m too young for him. I’m too inexperienced. Which is really too bad.

When I get to New York City, the only thing I control is my list. Not my father’s death or the loss of my home. Not the hole in my heart or the defective valve that’s dictated so much of my life. But I can do is put pen to paper and make a list of all the ways I can live out loud, just like Dad would have wanted.

See the city from the top of the Empire State Building: Check.
Eat hot dogs on the steps of The Met: Check.
Get a job at Wasted Words: Check.

But Greg wasn’t on my list. And just when I think I know where to put him, everything changes.

List or no list, I realize I can’t control anything at all, not even my heart.

Not the decisions it makes, and not the moment it stops.

I was the kid who stayed inside to read.

As a four-eyed nerd with a bad perm, I was no one’s dodgeball pick, but I had a lot of friends. Frodo and Bilbo, for instance. Kristy, Stacey, Claudia and the gang (iykyk). Once, in the third grade, I wrote a teen murder mystery inspired by Christopher Pike. On solving my mystery in twelve pages, I decided I was a terrible writer and should never, ever do that again.

Fortunately, I didn’t take my own advice.

I write romance for that feeling you get at the end, like you’re standing on top of a mountain with a backpack full of hundred dollar bills. I write romcoms because is there anything better than banter and grand gestures? I write because I love to create and I love words. I love books, and I love stretching my imagination. I love love, and if you do too, bring your coffee and have a seat. I think we’re gonna be friends.

“I never saw Annie Daschle coming...”

Have you guys ever experienced an asthma attack? And if you haven’t, have you ever wondered what it felt like? I know weird question alert. Just bare with me, I promise there’s a point to this. There are asthma attacks you can feel coming, like your body just knows, and there are asthma attacks that sneak up on you out of no where. And honestly, this book has the feeling of both. Point blank, basically, the important thing about an asthma attack that pretty much IS this book in every way, is that moment before the attack hits. When everything around you goes silent, and your body is trying to tell you something. Then you heart rate increases showing know sign of slowing down. Your breathing starts to become light, then choppy, then heavy. And the only thing to stop it is the aid of something stronger, you know? Something bigger. Something IMPORTANT.

Living Out Loud *screams* everything I just used to describe an asthma attack. But in a good way, 100% NOT in a bad way. Because this book came out of left field and handed me my a** without me knowing it was coming. Because I can’t tell you guys how many times I lost my breath, and *felt* my heart in the depths of every beat, as I stumbled and crashed through this book. This is THAT Book. The book everyone absolutely NEEDS to read. The book that is so silently damaging in the way that it stays with you long after you finish it.

I can sit here and talk about the affects of this book forever. How well and intricately beautiful is was written. How Staci’s Austen inspired books always give off that sweet nostalgic, yet timeless feeling of everlasting love. But I would keep you here forever if I did that...

Greg Brandon is that character who had no problem where he was at in his life. He was happy. He has a wonderful tight knit family that he adored with everything in him. And friends who rounded out his world in such a positive light at his dream job. He was perfectly ok with where he was at.

    But...
    *Just* ok.
    Until Annie.

”It was maybe only a heartbeat, a breath, but it felt like that second stretched out in a long thread between us.”

”But, out of nowhere, she would invade my mind like cigarette smoke. I’d wave thoughts of her away with a dour twist of my lips, all while jonesing for just one drag.”

“The knowledge that it was chemical, that it had no depth or roots, didn’t matter. Something in me recognized something in her, and that was that.”

And then there’s Annie. Sweet, adventurous Annie. Annie with the heart condition she didn’t deserve. Annie with her family as her rock behind her. Annie who would do anything to Live Out Loud for her father.

And then the Annie she became after Greg Brandon happened...

“Because for a moment, my pain was behind me in the coolness of my shadow and the whole world was spread out in front of me like a feast of possibility. And I would take a taste of everything I could.”

“And the sense of connection, forged by sharing an experience so profound to both of us, was so strong and alluring, I yielded to the heady desire for more.”

”They weren’t eyes of a friend or a boss or a big brother or uncle; those eyes sent a spark of heat through my chest and cheeks and pinched the air from my lungs.”

The saying, “timing is everything”, has never been as strong as it is in this book. Sometimes being silently enamored can be mistaken for something completely on the opposite side of the spectrum.

    And when that happens, well...

”All things had a line that, once crossed, could not be stepped back over. And I had reached that line, passed it without realizing until I looked down. But instead of finding myself in her arms, I was pressed against the glass, the separation between us as thin as it was impenetrable.”

Sometimes, in every sense of the word, the chance encounter far beyond too late.

Get ready for Staci Hart to tilt your world on its axis. You will become breathless, and feel your heart more than you’ve ever FELT it before while reading a book, numerous times. Get ready to read your new top fav of 2018.

Living Out Loud is the third book in The Austen Series but it can absolutely be read as a standalone. It's charming and sweet but will punch you with a bit of emotion that you didn't see coming.

It's a retelling of Jane Austen's Sense & Sensibility that actually makes you forget that it is a re-telling. I thought the way it was modernized and the flow of the writing really made me forget that it was retelling a story and just a new one that I could fully embrace.

I loved how spunky and full of life Annie is. I really thought her character was developed well and I couldn't help but fall in love with her. She's loving and caring to anyone that she crosses path with and she just has this shining aurora to her that makes everyone gravitate towards her.

There's a lot of classical literature that is quoted in Living out Loud and it spoke to my heart. I loved how Hart loved the classics into the modern day world and made it chic.

If you are looking for a sweet and semi-emotional read with characters that will capture your heart from the start, then this is the book for you.

More Wasted Words?! Yes please! Ever since Greg’s character was introduced, I have been waiting for him to get his own story. He is one of the sweetest, best guys ever and I couldn’t wait to see him get his happily ever after. So, when Living Out Loud ended up on my kindle, I dropped everything and dove head first into Greg’s story.

Living Out Loud had me from page one. From the moment I dove into Annie and Greg’s story, I just knew it was going to special, I mean hello, it is a part of The Wasted Words Series!! Of course it was going to knock my socks off. And let me tell you, it totally did. Living Out Loud is a book of firsts and of second chances. It is a story of living and making most out of your time. It is a story of letting go of your fears and experiencing new things; of not being afraid to live out loud.

Annie is one of those characters that just steals your heart instantly. She is so fun and has the best outlook on life, despite the cards she has been handed. Her happiness is contagious and you can’t help but want to surround yourself with her light. You just want to try to make all of her dreams come true. And Greg….He didn’t stand a chance when Annie ran into him. He is one of the best guys you will ever meet and there isn’t anything he wouldn’t do for those he cares out. He tried to fight the feelings had for Annie, but a connection like theirs was meant to be explored. I adored their friendship and the burn between them. All the small and big moments made their story completely worth wild.

Living Out Loud was a fabulous read from beginning to end. Staci Hart is the queen of swoon worthy and unforgettable words. No one and I mean no one does romance and Jane Austen retellings quite like this author. And Living Out Loud is no exception. It was well written and entertaining. It is a story about putting others happiness ahead of your own. It is a story of love and friendship. It is a story of moments and how they have the power to change everything….

Living Out Loud is an amazing addition to the Wasted Words Series and was totally, 100% worth the wait!

This was an ok romance. I liked the start but it lost me a little about 20% in. I couldn’t reconcile Annie’s feelings for someone she was in a “relationship” with for a matter of days. I know she’s young and meant to be somewhat naive, but I just couldn’t connect with her. Think I need a book with characters who aren’t quite as clueless. The writing itself was quite good, so think it was more the type of characters that I couldn’t mesh with and not so much the actual writing. I’d try something else from this author if the characters were a little more mature.

I've always been a huge fan of the classics. In especially Jane Austen books. When I discovered that Staci Hart is writting another book inspired by one of Austen's novels - Sense and Sensibility - I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. From her previous work I can tell that Staci is a very gifted writer and excellent story teller. She knows how to create characters who are so amiable and charming you can't help yourself but fall in love with. Her writing is poignant and touching. It makes you loose yourself in her stories never wanting them to end. This warm, comfortable feeling of pure joy and happiness her words bring is absolutely addictive! This is how I felt about Living Out Loud. This heartfelt and sweet story made me swoon hard! I loved the main characters Greg and Annie and absolutely adored the second characters too like Annie's mother and sisters, as well as her uncle and aunt.

Annie Daschle arrives in New York City with her mother and sisters after her father's sudden death. Sad and a little lost she realizes that the only thing she can control in her life is her list. The list that entails all the firsts she wants to experience. With a hole in her heart she was forced to live a life with constrictions. But now she wants to change that. She wants to live out loud, just like her dad would have wanted.

Despite her mother's concern she gets a job at Wasted Words, a bookshop where her nerdy and romantic heart feels at home. What was not a part of her list and she never saw coming was Greg Brandon. Her new boss and kindred spirit who knows about loss too. If he only waren't so much older than her. With her eighteen years Annie is naive and unexperienced in every way, while Greg is twenty eight and knows what he wants from life. Enthralled by her beauty and sweet innocence he will decide to help her to check off some points from her list. The more time they spend together, the more the lines of their friendship will start to blur.

Just when Annie thinks she’s figured out where to put Greg, everything changes. In the span of a few days, she finds herself caught in the middle of two men who couldn't be more different from each other. While Will is outgoing and charming but seems to keep some dark secrets, Greg is modest, compassionate and protective. List or no list, Annie will realize she can’t control anything at all, not even her heart...

Gosh how much I loved Greg Brandon. This guy was such a dream boat! He was a good-hearted person who putted other people's happiness before his own. I loved how patient and protective he was of Annie. I just have a huge crush on him!

Annie was sweet and full of live. Despite her heart condition she wanted to live her life to the fullest. At times she was naive and indecisive, but that was to be expected from an eighteen year old. Deep down she was a true romantic and I really loved that about her.

I'm not going to give away who Annie will choose. You need to find it out on your own. But let me assure you that you will be happy with the ending!

I want to point out that Living Out Loud is not only a romance book. It's so much more. It's a story about a young woman that discovers life and love and realizes that reality is not always a fairytale. Sometimes the best things in our lives are right in front of our eyes. Thank you so much for this gem of a book Staci Hart! I'm looking forward to the next book in the Austen series. 5 stars
