I’m a big fan of Wuxia and Cultivation stories that take themselves somewhat seriously, but still deliver on the tropey goodness of the genre, and this certainly fits the bill. This story is epic in scale, but feels very grounded, with characters who are a joy to follow from their first fumbling steps into the martial world all the way to their heavens-shaking final destinies. The action is satisfying and frequent, but with enough breathing room to let the characters grow and plots develop. The cultivation system feels very classic, it is easy to understand, but flexible enough to allow for all sorts of fun techniques and abilities.

I will say that the one area that felt a bit thin is the development of the antagonists. The Big Bad is pretty much just a generic evil wizard, with no real depth, but this is made up for somewhat both by the slightly more interesting underlings he has working for him, and by the fact that he really just serves as a metaphor for the injustice and oppression of the world. He serves his purpose, and it’s fine, but anyone looking for a really interesting, nuanced villain, won’t find it here.

All told, this was a very fun read, and a worthy addition to the growing field of Western Wuxia/Xianxia fantasy.

Having read Jeremy Bai’s Translations over the years, and really enjoying the efforts he put into translating massive works of literary masterpieces from Chinese webnovelists, I was of course quite intrigued to find that he had written a book of his own.
Without too many spoilers, I will say that this novel blends both eastern and western fantasy elements quite nicely into one package. For those of you that enjoy either, I definitely recommend this crossover.

This book is the novelization of the Wandering Heroes of Ogre Gate RPG. It centers on the two great legendary heroes of that world. Sunan and Bao. Despite its length it is a quick read. As a fan of the game, it was nice to read the tale that lead to the current situation in the realm.

Unique book where the beginnings of an introduction to a energy / cultivation system to a world is shown. In most wuxia books, cultivation systems are already well entrenched.
    Highly recommend this book

This is a very easy read and is a great way to get into the Wuxia and XianXian type novels. Very fast paced story with a likable group of characters. Great way to get your feet wet and immerse yourself in different type of story telling.

It's an epic, epic of average epic proportions like the Iliad only wuxia and lacking greek "dudes" and a small tick down from iliad style morbid character deaths.

Great characters and character evolution. Disappointed there isn't a second book. Super cool the sequel is a table top game though.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun read and an excellent add to the tabletop game Wandering Heroes of Ogre Gate
Reviewed in Canada on October 12, 2021
I actually started playing Wandering Heroes of Ogre Gate before Jeremy released this book and had a lot of fun with it. And I've long enjoyed reading Wuxia and Xianxia. So you can imagine this was pretty much guaranteed to be something I enjoyed.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the characters were fun and likeable and had a nice growth curve. I'm also the kind of guy who gets annoyed when there are too many characters and did not find that to be the case here.

I felt that how the story progresses, is explained, and the reactions of the characters to various events throughout the story to be believable and well paced. I enjoyed the book from end to end.

I definitely would recommend this book to both readers new to the genre, long time fans of the genre, and also anyone who's played Wandering Heroes of Ogre Gate or might be interested in playing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great starting point for wuxia/xianxia
Reviewed in Brazil on February 5, 2020
This is a great novel for anyone who like eastern martial movies and are interested in fantasy books. There is a huge community of readers from chinese wuxia/xianxia books and this one is a great introduction to this world. Deathblade is a renowned translator of xianxia and do an amazing job on this book. The book in itself is based on an RPG game and it is set as a prequel to the RPG timeline. Different from the major xianxia book, this world had people that practiced martial arts, but it was more of a military style of life. Then a huge event brought creatures from other plane to this world and some sort of "magic", actually known as Qi, startas to mold the world our heroes live in. We have two heroes in this story, a male and a female, that start on two different journeys and meet by destiny. By chance, they came in contact with Qi and started to create their own martial arts, since both of them didn't have previous formal training. It is a well crafted story, the pace is a little slow in the beginning, but it picks up as they start to create their martial arts. For any fantasy e martial movies lover, this is definitely a must read and a door to a whole new genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun story for both newcomers to wuxia as well as old readers
Reviewed in Germany on June 2, 2019
As a frequent reader of both fantasy as well as web novels (wuxias and xanxia) this book has presented a lovely mix in the middle. Having both the bases and flow of a high quality publication while embracing it's roots of wuxia/xanxia.

Overall I highly recommend it. It's slightly different for everyone and offers a great story with a great conclusion.
