About the author

Joy Dawn King, who also writes Mr. Darcy/Elizabeth stories as Christie Capps, fell in love with Jane Austen's writings in 2012 and discovered the world of fan fiction shortly after. Intrigued by the many possibilities, she began developing her own story for Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet.
At the time she wrote her first novel, "A Father's Sins", she was living high in the Andes Mountains of South America. Joy loved to take an occasional break from the Latin culture and bury herself in reading English literature about her favorite English characters. Joy, and her husband of 37 years, lived next door to their only child, Jennifer, her husband, and twin grandchildren and is a native Oregonian.
In late 2014 the Kings relocated to Oregon where other stories popped into her head. She is typing as fast as she can to keep up.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis story is not really a variation, the characters are there but that is all. The plot is unexpected and well drawn, leading the reader through many trials and tribulations, during which we meet new characters and come out with the experience of a deeper appreciation of love, honesty and giving of oneself.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was a great story! I feel maybe the author went thru a similar incident because the details of how they survived being overboard is so detailed!.. I felt I was in the water trying to help Darcy! This was a page turner! You will enjoy the wonderful people they meet.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2021Format: KindleVerified Purchasehe never knew himself... until they found each other. kidnapped. mistaken as Charles Bingley and his sister at the Netherfield ball, Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet are thrown together in the adventure of a lifetime, or two, or more - that is, if they lived to tell the tale. so, stuffed into a dark, dank cabin of the Peregrine - what turned out to be more than just a pleasure boat, ODC (not quite the couple yet) have quipped, argued, strategized and, well, got quite close to one another. (it was a close quarter) befriended by ten-year-old smarty pants Jonah Hackett, they manage. then the gale storm. then thrown overboard (the three of them). when they are befriended by a local, they find they are on French soil. (not so good if you are a Brit; Napoleon was quite unfriendly) their adventure becomes less adversarial and more dependent. first lie: they are just brother and sister. second lie: Darcy is a mute.(well until he opened his mouth) third lie: they are husband and wife. ok. none of the above were true. so, the point??? WHY was someone going to the trouble of kidnapping Charles Bingley??? or his sister??? which neither of them were. (not a lie) this book was just fun. and - did SHE ever come to know herself?? - did HE ever come to know himself?? of course. ODC just needed to see themselves through each other's eyes. and they did.. it was like coming home. and they finally did.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhen I first looked at the description of this title, I wasn't sure if the premise of ODC being kidnapped was one I could buy into...come on, some of these P&P variations involving kidnapping are so far fetched. However, that is not usually J Dawn King's way. Somehow, her stories just work!
I enjoyed the new characters to the point I had a hard time putting it down (you know, for my beauty sleep) and I don't want to spoil it for you. Perhaps other reviewers have said enough on that score.
I will say that I was not ready for it to end. Isn't that the mark of a good read? One you can't put down, yet don't want to end? There was nothing terribly complicated about the plot, just a pleasant story. For Ms. King...your line from Darcy, telling Elizabeth to do something (again no spoiler, hopefully) and "argue about it in the morning," was so great I am still chuckling about it! Oh, and Elizabeth 's "treasure" was well done and gave some depth to the work that I found pleasing.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI am not a fan of oceans and pirates so I didn't have much hope for this story. Only sheer boredom made me begin to read it. To my surprise I truly enjoyed reading this story very much. I found the events described to be realistic and the characters quite colorful. The animosity between the main characters was ended fairly quickly because it was the only way they were going to survive.
Leave it to Bingley to ignore letters and put everyone at risk. For someone who doesn't actually have a job, doesn't read, and actually doesn't do anything he is incredibly lazy and irresponsible. I'm amazed that they never have time during a day to even have a brief conversation about anything important when they ( especially Bingley) does nothing.
Very entertaining and I was pleased that we had an update by having several characters return to England and seek out the Darcy's.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI enjoyed the book. This is a sweet, adventurous love story. I liked how Darcy and Elizabeth were able to find new things to admire about one another. Jonah and Madame Vartan was a welcome treat.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat an adventure. This book revolves around Elizabeth and Darcy. Once they are kidnapped from Bingley’s ball, the story does not stray from them. This allows the reader to share in the unbelievable adventure that alters their lives. Kidnapped, almost drowning, stuck in France and then their journey back to England. The whole thing is of a short time frame yet filled with so much emotion. Sometimes big events can make a day feel like a month…that is how this story is. This story is so fun I wouldn’t mind reading it gain…it is all new with the Elizabeth and Darcy live story at its core.
