The agonizing wait for him to return began, but tragedy struck leaving Arabella to only wonder what could have been.
Jacob was gone from this world, and life had to move on.
A long time later, when the Earl of Winchester proposes, everyone understood that it was time, finally even Arabella. A simple life, free of heartache, might be just all that she could hope for.
But just as she starts to set her mind to the marriage, a familiar face limps back to Grosvenor Square. Shockingly, her Jacob has returned, but is he even the same Jacob that left all that time ago?

I enjoyed this RegencyRomance that kept me entertained and engaged from beginning to end withinteresting characters and a story that included lots of drama and emotionalromance. I liked the dynamic between Lady Arabella Marchmont and Lord Jacob StLedger who are given a second chance at romance when he returns home afterbeing reported killed in the war. This is a must-read for fans of this genreand I look forward to reading more by this talented author.

About the author

Rose has read her way through countless romances over the years, “borrowing” them from her older sisters, and hiding them from her mother (Mom didn't like the sexy book covers!)
She has a special love for Regency romances and when she began writing, the Regency period was a natural place to start. The ton, the wealthy families, the Season, the dilemmas, and yes, the marriages, have always fascinated her. She loves a happy ever after! Now she is happy to bring this passion to her stories and share it with her readers.
On a personal note, Rose lives in North Carolina, is married, and has a terrier that barks too much. She enjoys taking him for walks to tire him out!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2019What a story! Rose Pearson gives us a powerful tale that starts out with a huge misunderstanding. Jacob is so hurt by it that his father buys his colours and he goes to was. Arabella is upset that he left, but she is devastated when his family receives notice that he has died in battle.
This sets the plot for the rest of this touching romance. Ms Pearson has much compassion as she writes this book. At the behest of her overbearing mother she is forced to face life without Jacob. The mother even accepts a proposal for Arabella. Then Jacob suddenly returns, albeit with a damaged leg, but he is alive.
Remember in days gone by a woman could not break an engagement without repercussions from the ton. There is so much emotion, angst, intimidation and coping with pure evil intentions. I hate to admit that I often cry at some scenes
in books, this was a tear jerker at times, at least to me.
So get your favorite beverage, a box of tissues and a comfortable spot and enjoy. I did.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2024I enjoyed Arabella and Jacob's story but for a while there he made me so mad! But in the end love prevailed and the villain received his comeuppance by 'falling into the hole he dug for others'. The ending is very sweet. Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2021Gentle, charming, & sweet. I was really enjoying this Regency romance story, until the hero, Jacob, turned out to be pretty spineless & stupid. Twice he did not fight for Arabella, even though as a supposed mature man, years later, he confessed he should have stayed & showed her he was not joking the first time. No matter what the threat, when he & Arabella became engaged, he pretty much gave up, even though moaning about how he would always love her. It was Arabella, determined & clear headed, who saved the day. Unfortunately, she forgave him right away, even though he never told her the whole truth on his own.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2024I always enjoy a friends to more romance. Arabella and Jacob, having more than their share of hurdles to overcome, have an unbreakable b9nd forged in childhood. Definitely worth reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2024I can't even imagine the thought of one's true love dying in a fear of war. Arabella struggles to grow up fast and fight against her mother's determination to see her married even though she believed her Jacob was gone. This back and forth story is sure to please. Reunited, and lost no more, their hearts are completely healed.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2022The book started out ok. Then when Jacob proposed to Arabella and she taken not serious, then Jacob left to go in the service to fight for his country. He got seriously injured they thought he was dead. So when he finally got better to travel home and was not dead, it was like whoa. Arabella was engaged to a lord bad guy, them Jacob got himself together, alot of stuff in between happen that was exciting, then in the end Jacob and Arabella got married. Great Book
- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2024This is a story of second chances. It is typical of most regency romance stories but entertaining all the same. Arab slow is a bit of a stubborn air head but the story is still interesting.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2019The story started a little predictable, then the situation changed. I could feel the tension build as the hero, facing more than one challenge, struggled with the best way to solve his dilemma. True to the times, he avoided burdening the heroine, which added to the tension. Well-written characters and an interesting plot with interesting secondary characters (I'm glad her mother wasn't mine) contributed to a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love
This story is quite full of the after effects of the war - how it can affect the mental and physical of the wounded but the love he came home to made him able to carry on

4.0 out of 5 stars A second chance at love
Arabella and Jacob grew up together. The pair have a friendship based on jokes and teasing. That is Until Jacob proposes and Arabella thinks it’s all a joke not realising her friends seriousness until it’s too late
Heartbroken by Arabella’s refusal of his proposal, Jacob goes off to war.
Realising her mistake she pines after her best friend until new of his death reaches her. At which time her mother insists that as a young woman who is out in society she must find a husband. Still broken Arabella begins being courted by another, whom she’s not that keen on but powerless to say no to and whom she is forced into an engagement with.
Jacob arrives back in London to the surprise of everyone, including his family, who has all considers him gone for good.
This is where the story gets good. As Jacob and Arabella begin to realise that their feelings for one another are still very much apparent, the question becomes what will happen to her engagement and her reputation?.
The story has a brilliant bad guy who sends chills down the spine and makes you uncomfortable to read about. Mainly because he is a reflection of so much of our modern white Privileged Male culture where the expectation is they deserve the best even if they haven’t worked for it.
I really enjoyed that, Jacob, the MMC was physically weak but not emotionally so. He was open and willing to admit his own mistakes. He is self aware in a way the villain is not. I love stories where the love story exists not between two perfect people but two imperfect people as it is much more realistic.
The hardest thing about this book was that it was almost painful to see the mother figure be so manipulative and controlling. I know some people have relationships with their parents like that but it was frustrating, her I’ll admit that added to the story too.
This book is sweet, clean, romance story filed with unrequited love, heartbreak, scandal, death, disability, love, compassion, society balls, gossip, a dash of controversy and a lot of desperation. It was a good read overall. Much better than the flesh one in this series, in my opinion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay
I may have said this before, Rose Pearson does have some great plot idea, sadly her writing of them is not so great.
In an attempt to sound authentic, she overwrites and complicates the dialogue. Much better to keep it straightforward to avoid breaking the flow.
Equally, there is far too much repetitive angst and heart wringing. It’s boring.
That said it worth giving the book a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVED IT WILL THEY GET THEIR HAPPINESS.
WOW this series is turning out to be great, I found this a little sad two young people loving each other dearly growing up as best friends, they were inseparable. Jacob decided to tell Arabella that he loved her and wanted to marry her, although she also had FEELINGS she thought he was joking with her. So he left and joined the army, she decided to wait for him, and declare her love on his return.
But circumstances and other people stop this from happening.
