Wayne Grant grew up in a tiny cotton town in rural Louisiana where hunting, fishing and farming were a way of life. Between chopping cotton, dove hunting and Little League ball he developed a love of great adventure stories like Call It Courage and Kidnapped.

Like most southern boys of that era, he saw the military as an honorable and adventurous career. Every living male member of his family had served in the Army covering World Wars I and II, Korea and Vietnam, so it was a natural step for him to attend and graduate from West Point. He just missed Vietnam, but found that life as a Captain, in an army broken by that war, was not what he wanted.

After tours in Germany and Korea, he returned to Louisiana and civilian life where he began a 10 year career in government including four years as a senior official in the Pentagon during the Reagan administration. During those years he saw the Army reborn from its post-Vietnam nadir to the outstanding force it became and remains today. Through it all he retained his love of great adventure writing and when he had two sons he began telling them stories before bedtime. Those stories became his first novel, Longbow.

The Saga of Roland Inness is the tale of a fourteen-year-old boy who possesses extraordinary skill with a longbow. It is a story of courage, loyalty, honor and treachery. Most of all, it a story of high adventure set in a time so filled with drama it has spawned legends that fascinate people to this day. It is the time of Richard the Lionheart, Robin Hood, Eleanor of Aquitaine and William Marshall, legendary figures all--some real and some fictional.

This is a great second book in the series and good historical fiction. From the fiction standpoint it has what I always look for, compelling and complicated characters. From the historical standpoint, I think it does a great job presenting what was a messy, ugly and complicated affair, the conquest and settlement of North America, by Europeans

This book seems to have two stories in one book. The first story was very interesting and didn’t quite go the way I expected. The second story I had to look up some history so I knew where it was going. The ending of the book connected the old world from England to the New World in America.

I e noted the first book and this one and hope there will be more. One of those books that you hate to put down. Doesn't hurt that I grew up a couple of miles from St. Mary's City.

I hope these two books ,No King, No Country and The long Rifles are the first two of a new series depicting the Inness family decesdents and friends settling and moving through the history of the fledgling America and USA . As well written as previous books by this author whose talent for inventing situations and dialogues for historical and fictional characters is first rate and imaginative keeping the reader interested from the first page through to the last page. Thank you sir for the good reads=joking there is more to come soon.

Of all Mr. Grants Innes Legacy books, this one is set in the time and place I am most interested in - the early contact by Europeans with native Americans. All his books that I have read are action packed fiction set in historically accurate times and places. His detailed descriptions of those settings are at least as interesting as the fictional stories imbedded in them and frequently lead me to research beyond the book. I certainly look forward to more in this series.

The Long Rifles (Inness Legacy #2) by Wayne Grant
A rollicking good tale about 1650’s English Maryland and the dominant native tribes of present day NY, PA, MD, and VA which were along the Great Warrior Path. The dominant theme is the clashing conflicts of interest among these peoples, but it is masterfully told with a human face.

    Wayne grant provides again
Loved the story line and thought I was quite well read, apparently not about the early European settlers to the US west coast.
Just love it when I can read an enthralling book with characters you can connect with and detailed life styles of the period and learn so much (I now get how the US has so many religious sects).
Boy, us Europeans how so much to answer for.
    WHENS THE NEXT ONE WAYNE?

Very good read, however if I was shooting at a group of attackers, I'd shoot the leaders first.
But that would spoil the story wouldn't it?

I thoroughly enjoyed this pioneer jaunt. The characters are really well defined , the plot takes you from native Americans, to sneaky conniving parliamentary adjucts to the ever present churches of various denominations, with that mix it is full of action. An enjoyable read recommended.

I really enjoyed the two books (so far) in this series. From a very young age growing up in Canada it was always my favourite place in the history of England and North America. Before the white men screwed up the continent it must have been wonderful. These books say it all as far as I'm concerned. Pity we destroyed so many of the indigenous population.
