The Lost Elemental (Royals of Kingwood Academy Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 9,955 ratings

It was supposed to be simple. Graduate, get a job to keep my mom from drowning in mountains of medical debt, and maybe score a scholarship to a decent college.

All of that changed in a single breath. Because it turns out I’m not human. And I just knocked out the power on an entire city block.

In a split second, all of my carefully-laid plans go up in smoke. There’s no chance for college because I’m being hauled off to Kingwood Academy. They say it’s for my own protection and those around me. But I know one thing for sure…

I’m not welcome here.

The mean girls don’t stop at insults and tripping you in the halls. They’re wielding magic that could cost me my life. And the rest of the school sees me as either a halfling that should be cast out or a powerhouse to be brought down.

Everyone except
them.

The charmer. The gentle giant. The psychopath. And maybe even the cruel prince.

The royals of Kingwood Academy have taken me under their wing and I can’t help but notice how my skin hums when they touch me. I shouldn’t be dreaming about a single one of them, let alone all four. But I can’t seem to stop myself.

Only someone doesn’t like the attention the royals are showing me. And when the attacks start, the princes will do anything to protect me. But they don’t know the true evil we face. The kind who will do whatever it takes to seize our power, even if that means stealing the very last breath from our lungs…

*Book one in a continuing three book series. Think fated mates, crazy powerful elementals, a heroine with no idea
what she is, protective royals, and an evil who wants all their power...

I don't usually write reviews but I just had to with this book series. From the very beginning I was hooked, could not out the book down. The characters are so well thought out. The plot is amazing and not like any other book I've read which is refreshing.. the female lead is strong and confident the male leads are strong and protective.. I read all three books in two days. I 100/10 would recommend you buy these books..

I have devoured this book and read it in one sitting!! I loved that Aura had all four. I love the guys except one. Riven can kick rocks for all I care, and he can take Drue with him. She sucks and I hope she dies a slow painful death. Now this ends on a cliffhanger so I am going to read the next book.

TLDR: while not perfect and a little repetitive in the end I enjoyed the series. I'm not mad that I read it and I will read more by Hale.

I'm writing this after finishing all three books in the series. The first book is more of a 4.5, probably about the same for the second. The last is a 3.5, but I rounded up for all of them. I read all three back to back in two sittings.

Generally speaking I enjoyed this series, which it needs all due credit for because I went into it not really thrilled for one of those dual universes where everyone is aware of magic.

So the magic world (four kingdoms each identified by an element) had a battle some time ago and people fled to earth. Not sure if earth immediately knew about them or if it happened over time, but the result of the magic and earth people mixing was that at the time of their high school graduation everyone is tested to determine if they have any magic ability. If you do, then you are sent to a magic college of varying levels of prestige.

FMC discovers she has unknown to her powers that may be strong and is sent off to the best school where she runs into the four kings to be and where she learns about her powers while people try to kill her.

    First, here's what bugged me:

Stop putting college kids in school girl uniforms. This isn't mentioned as often by book 3.

If each kingdom is a particular element then why do the strongest from the kingdoms have multiple elements?

By book three the chapter pattern is learn new info, have sex, action scene, FMC ends up unconscious, FMC wakes up to her guys surroundings her, FMC has sex, FMC wakes up and learns something new. The amount of time this chick spends unconscious is unreal.

There are a lot of attempts on FMC's life. A lot a lot. Despite this she is often walking around with no guard, just her guys (who also have numerous attempts on their lives) or two guards max. Like, okay, you are the most important person to out people but meh, who needs security.

Pretty much every major conflict scene with the guys is forced and then just resolved with, you guessed it, sex. I get what Hale was going for trying to have their trauma get in the way, it just wasn't executed well. Same for overcoming the struggles.

The thing with the knife comes out of left field and is never explained.

Hale just foregoes sovereignty of a territory or a local protocol to advance the story. Ie one king can just show up and search another kinds territory without it being an act of war or a king is allowed to demand the audience of a prince from another kingdom. A counsil is randomly introduced at one point to try and create a scenario for another plot point. The counsel could have easily been used to explain away some of those meetings. Like there is a treaty in place that allows x king to perform y action in abc circumstances that would otherwise be deemed war or forces princes to appear.

This next point is a bit of a spoiler so skip it if you want. Two of the guys have horrible fathers. We don't get anything that explains why their kids don't end up like them. Like, yeah, they are good people, but that usually comes from having one person in your life that shows you kindness or seeing others have that kindness and wanting that. The two guys in question didnt have that.

Also a spoiler: two of the kings do not want the kingdoms unified so it doesn't make any sense why they send their sons to the one school to live together and function as a unit, and apparently have had the sons interacting for their entire lives. Again, this could be fixed with a treaty but without it there is a plot hole.

    What I liked:

It's a decent fantasy romance story.

I liked the main characters. One of the sub characters gives me a very Giles from Buffy vibe after he told the watchers to sod off.

It's fated mates but they don't see each other an start banging five seconds later. There is no spark and instant realization but there is a drawn to each other in an intense infatuation way that is pretty relatable.

There isnt one of those stupid I'm going to punish you for not listening to me scenes.

When you have the fun moments the banter between the FMC and her guys or the guys is fun and realistic.

You have a bunch of strong personality men in this who are usually written as very commanding of the FMC, but Hale does a good job of having that kind of guy but having the FMC talk them down or put them in their place. So, like, if FMC wants to go talk to y but y is dangerous, the guys will do the whole hell no over my dead body, FMC is like yeah, I'm doing it. Here are all the reasons why it is safe and you are being hypocritical. The guys agree, if not begrudging, and then give FMC the space to do the thing.

Even though the villains are predictable they are done decently. There are a couple of twists with them that are done well. However there was one particular villain who I think the breadcrumbs were a little too obvious for, and another character who sort just disappears could have been used to better conceal that villain by using the lost character as a misdirect. And then also just don't have those breadcrumbs. When it's a surprise villain reveal if you foreshadow the villain, the reveal is a big whomp whomp for anyone who catches your foreshadowing.

It was an engaging story that I was pretty into until the 3rd book where the amount of time the FMC spent either unconscious or having sex got a lot ridiculous. Important meeting we are being summoned to? Better have sex first. It's been three chapters, gotta make FMC unconscious again.

I have been in a reading slump, and this book just flew by. The only thing I would take this down to a 4.5 star as it ended on a cliffhanger, not my favorite thing. Will be reading the next book and hoping it is just as good.

Imagine you’re a high school kid, a human, you and your best friend headed to a place where everyone of a certain age will be tested to see if they contain any elemental power. Now imagine you are standing on a stage in front of everyone when you feel this huge surge of something. Next thing you know you’re waking up to 2 of the best looking guys you’ve ever seen telling you you’re on your way to the Kingwood Academy to learn about your power and how to control it. This is the story of how Aura finds out more about herself than she ever could have dreamed of.
This is a great beginning to this series and I look forward to the next book.

The Lost Elemental is the first book in the Royals of Kingwood Academy series by Tessa Hale. The Royals of Kingwood Academy is a reverse harem romance and is adult in nature. I really love reverse harems if the story is done well, and the Lost Elemental was fantastic. I loved the characters, I loved the setting and I really love what the world is setting up to be. I flew through this book, and I am desperate to get my hands on the next book in the series. I am excited because the books will be releasing in rapid succession, but it is just not fast enough. haha Book two comes out in October and I want it now.

In The Lost Elemental, not everyone has elemental magic. In high school humans are tested to see if they have elemental magic, and if they do and if it is strong enough they are sent to one of the magical academies for training. Untrained elementals are very dangerous. But full blooded elementals are not too fond of humans with magic because they are seen as something less than. And normally their powers are not as strong as full blooded elementals. Within the elemental community your powers can vary- the stronger you are the more elements you will have an affinity towards. Most have an affinity toward 1 or 2 elements. Very strong individuals will have the ability to control 3 elements, but 4 elements is almost unheard of. If you can control all 4 elements you are what is known as an Aether, and those have been hunted into extinction.

Aura has no idea she has any kind of power, so when she knocks out the power during her schools testing ceremony she is more than shocked. She is carted away to Kingwood Academy the most prestigious of all the elemental academies. And there she meets Atlas, Riven, Kai, and Phoenix- the four elemental princes. I loved each of the guys and I felt like I really got to know them all pretty well except for Riven. Hopefully I get to know him better in the next book, but I am super pumped to see where this story is going and I am ready for book 2. This is a great reverse harem to pick up if you love an academy setting. This book was everything I wanted and then some.

The original plan was to just get started with the book, but I ended up reading the entire book in one sitting. I really love the writing style. It's straight from the heart, focussing on the emotions and not being more detailed or more flowery than needed. I mostly kept on reading because of the plot though. I really enjoyed how the information and confirmations were slowly revealed. I also absolutely loved the flashbacks. Just like we got to know the characters better and better. I especially like this kind of heroine. She's slightly naive and she's clearly not ready to deal with this world and yet she doesn't feel spineless or weak. I want more!

I loved the mystery behind the FMC in this book and the story told has made me more curious about her origins and where she will go in these books. I really enjoyed the overall story and that cliffhanger at the end has me dying to read the next book. I loved most of the characters, I think there’s room for redemption with some of them but I’m also hoping that some of them find the ending they deserve. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I would recommend giving it a read.
