I liked this book way better than the last one, and it was a good ending to an interesting idea! It starts with Andrew and Katie being kept in a secure room. They try to escape and leave the facility, but are recaptured easily. I wish there had been more information about their time being locked up, but the two, along with four other Unaffected, escape into the Rainforest and manage to find a pair of hunters that lead them to a nearby town.
It's here that I started to really get into things. If you have read The Secrecy series, hopefully you will be as surprised as I was that Duffy shows up! She’s one of the few agents that hasn’t suffered from the urges, and she is desperate to figure out how to stop them. I was so excited to see Duffy again. It was a real shock, and I love that the different series share a universe and are interconnected. Another character that is mentioned, though not by name, is Aiken from The Finding of Another World. As soon as the characters were talking about satellites, I was hoping that book was connected as well.
I was wondering why they couldn’t just blow up the satellites, and then Duffy explains they don’t know about their possible defense systems, so attempting to cause serious harm isn’t a good idea. This was a good reason, and I was satisfied with it.
The group from the facility agree to help Duffy try to stop the urges. There is some brief mention of training for the group. It could have been expanded more, seeing as the book is relatively short, and it would have been interesting to see into Duffy’s agency.
When they break into the facility, there are a lot of deaths. Some of them are very quick and easy to miss, which is unfortunate because they’re characters we’ve gotten to know over the last couple hundred pages. I won’t spoil too much of the ending, because it really is a satisfying read. They manage to turn the satellites off and stop the urges. It’s described that the urges don’t stop entirely, or right away. In fact, some people still suffer from them. I think that’s a good way of dealing with them, because it shows the urges have affected people in ways that can’t be easily fixed or understood.
The series ends on a very sad note, but it is worth the read. I would recommend this series to anyone who read any of Butler’s previous works and would like to see some connections between them, or if you just like a good adventure/sci-fi story!
