Love, Lies & Clones: A Futuristic Mystery Novel Kindle Edition
…but not like June's.
Her secret will cost her father’s life…and maybe her own.
June never asked to be created in a laboratory where human cloning is illegal. She never asked to keep her creation a secret for fear the man who made her—her father—would be arrested for his crimes, but most of all, she never asked for the faulty heart that beats inside her chest.
After avoiding her paranoid drunken father for her entire adulthood, he shows up on her doorstep to warn her that people are after him for the secrets he keeps about how she was created. Without a thought, she dismisses his delusions, but when he disappears, she can’t help believing his claims may be true this time.
June needs help, but she has lived her life alone due to the secret she keeps. The police are not an option because sharing her secret is a prison sentence for her father and an eternity in a laboratory for her. When an AWOL soldier saves her life and insists he can help, she is leery.
How does this stranger know her most precious secret?
Her only hope to find her dad and solving this conspiracy is trusting the man who insists he holds the missing link in this deadly puzzle, but placing her trust in a stranger is the last thing she’s willing to do.
You’ll love this stand-alone romantic futuristic mystery, because it’s a thought-provoking look at the ethics of cloning.

About the author

Joynell Schultz manages the family zoo (literally!) and writes romantic speculative fiction in her (nearly non-existent) free time. She's a pharmacist by training (boring!) but prefers to hang out with zebras and bears or some imaginary characters. Oh, and she (finally!) hit the USA Today Bestsellers list.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2017This book is a real page-turner. June likes to hold everyone at a distance and resists getting close to anyone including her own father as well as someone who comes into her life unexpectedly. This builds an almost tangible resistance in all of her relationships. Not only was this book sci-fi, but it was also a mystery and a romance story, which made it interesting. As a side note, we love the cover, think it's catchy and would not change it. This book also brings to light the controversial topic of human cloning, along with the legal and ethical dilemmas that go along with cloning. Joy weaves together this plot nicely with twists and turns to keep you reading and wondering what's going to happen next. Although the background of the book is scientific, there are many humanistic elements that keep it interesting even for readers that do not gravitate toward the sci-fi genre. Nice work, Joy. We can't wait to read your next book!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2018Interesting story, a mystery/suspense involving cloning. I enjoyed the plot and thought the book was well-written and engaging. I don't know enough about the technology of cloning to judge the accuracy of the details, but the parts about the science of it felt authentic to me. I liked the character development and the interaction between the two main characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2017I really wanted to like this book. I appreciated it and read it to the finish, but I kept on feeling it was going off the rails here and there, as though parts had been included which didn't quite belong, and a tight internal structure was constantly being expanded or pulled out of shape. This is not my favourite fiction genre anyway although the deep implications of cloning are fascinating for all of us these days, or should be, so it's not really futuristic or fantasy but more a kind of scenario building. I'm not sure about the way the central character was developed, and her interactions with others seemed sometimes forced and unbelievable. Maybe a tighter edit was needed, and more concrete descriptive passages would have helped. A good read, and other reviewers obviously loved it, but I felt it needed more focus and less distraction.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2024June has known all her life she is a clone of her deceased mother. Life with her father was marvelous until he started drinking due to her resemblance to his dead wife. After her dad goes missing, Elliot ends up on her doorstep because his brother is also missing. Even though they distrust each other, they work to resolve the mystery.
This Genetic Engineering Science Fiction is striking. Fiction can entertain legal, social, ethical, and moral questions that would otherwise bore people to death if presented in non-fiction. In this case, the questions surround cloning. In addition, the mystery and romance of the story are delightful. The end is fabulous.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2017Being a fan of the Orphan Black TV series, I had to pick up a copy of Love, Lies & Clones. While the plot is completely different, it had a little of the same vibe. I really enjoyed the main character June and sympathized with her struggle with her identity as a clone. The plot was fast paced and kept me reading late at night to find out what became of June's father, and how June's relationship with Elliott turned out. A very entertaining read!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2019The story was very slow to get involved, but I didn't realize how much I had read and then couldn't put it down. Interesting plot, and terrific character development in this book. Looking forward to the next story.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2017I read this in a motel room on vacation in one evening. I could n't put it down. Now I have to come down from the adrenaline high and try to go to sleep. Interesting characters, dramatic situations, plenty of action, and the occasional typo or grammar goofup. A fun read for readers from 12 to at least 73 (me).
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2018Everything about this book was just OK, the story, the protagonists, the outcomes. I never felt the suspense. It was a page turner in the sense that I kept hoping it would get more suspenseful, that there would be some twist or surprise. But there wasn't. It was set a couple decades in the future. But it didn't need to be. That aspect added nothing to the story. The "clean" romance was also meh. Although I made it to the end. I won't be reading the sequel.

Title: Love, Lies & Clones
Author: Joynell Schultz
From: Amazon
Genre: Sci-fi (soft), suspense

Synopsis (from Goodreads): June’s deadly secret is she’s a clone, and if she tells anyone her father’s involvement, he’ll face the death penalty. After his suspicious disappearance, the police have failed to find him. During her frantic search, she’s surprised by an AWOL military man who insists her father's the key to finding his brother. Bullet's fly as they uncover more about the horrific experiments. Can June trust someone with her secret... and her heart?
Love, Lies & Clones had me from the first chapter. It's one of those books that has you intrigued and desperate to know more about what's going on. As the book progresses, more and more of the truth comes to light, but what I particularly liked was that there were more mysteries added as the story progressed, and sometimes even the answers to one of the earlier questions raised more questions in itself.
The genre is actually quite hard to define. It's set in the near future, and there were significant scientific advancements in the field of cloning. The world was half recognisable and half futuristic, and I thought the blend worked really well. More than that though, I liked that the cloning itself, a major plot point, was more than just something scientific, the morals came into it as well.
June was a strong lead character, determined to discover the truth, and find her father, but she also had a vulnerability that was needed in the role. I liked that she didn't quite have it all together because that made her more real...I know in her situation I would be just as useless!
The male lead, Elliot, also had some complexities that made him more realistic, including some strange almost stalkerish tendencies. At first, I wasn't too sure what to make of him, but as his own motivations became clear, he became more rounded, and much more likable.
The interactions between Elliot and June were believable, with both of them interacting with a level of wariness. I absolutely loved the fact that June didn't just trust Elliot from the off, and made him work for it, it added something else to their story line.
If you like suspense, with some science and a light love story, then I'd definitely recommend this one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Vivid and engaging
The core idea behind this fun ride through a near future world is solidly imagined and brought to life vividly , with an engaging story. At times it slows a little and I felt it was missing something, yet if I was pushed I could not tell you what it was. But I would still recommend it to anyone who enjoys a mix of mystery and introspective SciFi

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced, futuristic mystery.
Admittedly I am a Sci-Fi / Fantasy fan, so picking up this book was a no brainer. I mean look at the front cover for a start! Set in the near future June, a clone goes on a search for her missing father who created her. Along the way she meets Elliot, a handsome military man who is also looking for his missing brother. An interesting mystery unravels and June finds that she is being hunted, fortunately she's got hunky Elliot to protect her, but I digress.
There's murder and a bit of romance too making this book an entertaining read! I look forward to reading more by this author. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real page turner
Great thriller set in the not too distant future. I can imagine a series, the characters are on a journey and this sounds like the beginning. Really enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great find
So if you look at my reviews I'm not really a Sci/Fi kind a gal. In fact when I downloaded I must have read wrong because I was waiting for the zombies and I get clones - go figure! That said I was delightfully surprised by firstly the standard of writing and secondly by the plot, which drew me pretty quickly into the thick of it. June is a clone, (remember Daisy the sheep?) when cloning of humans is still illegal - hope it's still illegal as there's plenty of people out there that one is more than enough of! June has a faulty relationship with her father, the cloner (is closer even a word?) and then she's on the run. A fast paced read from a new writer that I'm sure will quickly get a well deserved following in this genre. Jenny O'B
