Love's Riff (Rebellious Youth Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.7 3.7 out of 5 stars 25 ratings

Most girls deal with a bad break-up with a pamper session and a shopping trip. Not nineteen-year old Taylor Devlin. With her confidence at an all time low she immerses herself in music. It isn't just something she's good at, it's in her blood.

So when her best friend convinces her to audition for up and coming band, Rebellious Youth, she figures she has nothing left to lose. Only she didn't plan on catching the eye of sexy-as-sin lead guitarist Cal Jensen. Taylor knows all about bad boy rockers and has absolutely no intention of going there, again. Even if Cal does make her feel alive, in the same way getting lost in a riff does. But it's hard to move past her own insecurities, and Taylor isn't sure if she's ready to let Cal prove that not all rockers are heartbreakers.

She knows music can heal her heart, but what if only Cal can make her whole?

Taylor Devlin is not like your ordinary nineteen year old. She is a college student with musical talent who is recovering from a messy break up, which has her in a self imposed sequestering. She hid herself away from everyone but her best friend, Laura. After a year of hiding and constant encouragement from Laura, Taylor tries out to be the bass player for the band "Rebellious Youth." Taylor tries out mainly as a favor to her BFF. Laura's motives were both selfish and not. While laura wanted to meet the lead singer and Taylor was her in, she also wanted to see her BFF come out from under the rock. Well the later worked really well. Taylor finally starts to regain some of her confidence she lost after her breakup. Until she meets lead guitarist Cal Jensen. They have a connection, but Taylor isn’t about to date another rocker and Cal feels he is not good enough for her. This back and fourth adds to their relationship as band mates too. They're repelling of each other because of their pasts was a great idea to add drama to the story. Will Taylor retreat back into her self imposed prison? Will Cal break her heart? Will the band members of Rebellious Youth help her grow as they all strive with the pressures of college and the demands of band life?

This was a "quick read", but I wish it was a more in depth plot. I didn’t feel like I got to know the characters well enough and pieces of their background stories seemed to be missing. Through most of the book, I felt this was a three star read, but then there was this surprising twist at about 80% into the book. I wasn’t expecting that and it changed my rating to four stars. There was great interaction between the band members but I felt like I was missing something, but I just couldn't put my finger on it. As much as that twist changed my rating up a star, the ending felt like it just sort of ended. There should have been a little more to the story and I hope that in the next book in the series we will get that more.

I have been in a horrible reading slump. HORRIBLE. Everything I started, I couldn’t finish. Nothing would hook me. But that all changed when Love’s Riff landed on my kindle.

Love’s Riff is told in Taylor’s point of view. She’s currently nursing a broken heart and she’s turned into this isolated person whose true passion is music. It’s what fuels her soul. I really loved that Taylor was also a musician and not just a musician’s girlfriend. She understood the music, she played the music and I felt like that made her stand out from every other character I’ve read involving musicians.

Although, I loved being in Taylor’s point of view I would have loved to be inside Cal’s point of view. I felt like I didn’t understand him at all and I felt like he didn’t get the chance to grow as a character because there was just so little I knew about him. He kind of felt one dimensional to me.

The writing in Love’s Riff kept me turning the page and before I knew it, I was at the end. I absolutely love when that happens. Now that I finished Love’s Riff I felt like it lacked something to really push it to give four or even five stars. I wanted more flashbacks so I could really understand why Taylor was the way she was in the beginning of the story.

I did feel like there was a whole lot of conflict that could’ve been resolved if they had communicated. I think that was the thing that frustrated me the most about the book.

However, I personally loved the secondary characters. I really fell for Lewis and hope to see him front and center in his own book.

Overall, I feel like this is a good starter for the series. I look forward to picking up the rest of the series and reading more about the boys and girl in Rebellious Youth.

This was my first time reading anything by Jenny Siegel and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed this touching story. The chemistry between these two characters totally comes alive and dances off the pages start to your heart and then goes to your mind ,it's like read about friend who finds love for the first time, and you heart goes out to them for happiness . Ms Siegel has given us a story that will have you on the edge of your chair while waiting to see what happens next ,The whole story will leave you wanting more from this author .This story is about a rock star and it has a twist to it and is sweet heroine is a member of the band .Sweet Taylor has lived a low profiler life for a while now ,so her friend talks her into trying to live a little more of a life. So Taylor decides to try out for a job with a band ,and the band is looking for a bass guitarist and the band is no other then the Rebellious Youth .But her nerves are pounding beyond belief ,but when she arrives at the audition more then her nerves will get her. Once she sees Cal who's the lead guitarist ,she chemistry has sparked flames from her toes to very other part of her body. But Cal has an instantly like to her and knows that Taylor is trouble with a capital T for him .But can they find happiness together ? I could go on and tell you more about this touching story ,but that would spoil it for you. I highly recommend that you read this touching story ,you won't be disappointed.
