Loving the Scarred Soldier: A Clean Regency Romance (Second Chance Regency Romance Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 1,374 ratings

Much more than a childhood friend…can there be a second chance for Lady Charlotte and James?

Lady Charlotte Tate has returned to the protection of her father’s roof after the death of her husband. Broken-hearted, she seeks to find a new beginning where it all began – Caldor House – the place where she first loved and lost. However, things aren’t as they used to be. When her former governess falls ill, and Charlotte decides to be her nurse, she is drawn into the secrets lurking in the shadows of the woman’s home, and the truth no one has dared tell her.

James Watts no longer exists; at least that is how he wishes it. Scarred in the Napoleonic Wars, and having lost his only love, Charlotte, he has cloistered himself in the recesses of his family home. Hidden away from the stares and horror of his neighbors at his now marred features, he has chosen to live a life in secret. Until Charlotte’s return and the longing for more, that she elicits inside of him, threatens to derail his plans to remain hidden.

Now they must face the scars of their past in order to have a future, but someone wants to keep them apart. Can this pair find love once more, or will they relive a past of love and loss?

Rose has read her way through countless romances over the years, “borrowing” them from her older sisters, and hiding them from her mother (Mom didn't like the sexy book covers!)

She has a special love for Regency romances and when she began writing, the Regency period was a natural place to start. The ton, the wealthy families, the Season, the dilemmas, and yes, the marriages, have always fascinated her. She loves a happy ever after! Now she is happy to bring this passion to her stories and share it with her readers.

On a personal note, Rose lives in North Carolina, is married, and has a terrier that barks too much. She enjoys taking him for walks to tire him out!

Oh my goodness how I disliked the h's father. He did everything that would make him come out ahead with no care to the consequences to his children.

You will understand why the H kept a secret from the h, I still didn't like it! Part was confusing is after she is informed of a death (no spoiler's), she overhears her father planning to marry her off. She is very upset and either faints or nearly faints because she loved this person so much and couldn't see her life with anyone else. The next scene jumps to her returning home after marrying the man her father wanted her too. She states she needed to marry him to save herself - what? Thought she loved the one she has known since childhood.

Anyway because of the ending with the H and the h's father I raised my review. It was amazing that he finally fought for what he wanted. He said everything I was yelling at my e-reader - so worth all the ups and downs in between.

Great secondary character's too who I hope will be getting their stories. We are up in the air about a minor secondary character, but no cliffhanger for our couple.

No cheating, very very bumpy road to HEA, romantic and clean - only a few kisses. Enjoyed the epilogue 6 months in the future. The ended at about the 92% mark on e-reader, rest is blurb for another story. (ljb)

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was a haunting, romantic tale of two lovers torn apart yet finding their way back to each other. I cried through the turmoil and smiled at the happily ever after. I learned that love could go through growing pains and come out beautiful and more vital.

Charlotte and James had such a tumultuous journey. I loved how Charlotte picked up the pieces of her life, although never complete, and lived a fulfilling life. She had emotional fortitude in spades. James was a tragic figure. His isolation and self-imposed torture tore at my heart. Charlotte’s imposing father and empathetic brother rounded out the characters satisfactorily.

The plot was highly character-driven. Most of the action was in the background. The characters were in their heads frequently. When the characters interacted with one another, there was magic. The plot kept my attention fairly well. I also enjoyed the Beauty And The Beast undercurrents.

The book dealt with serious issues. Yet the love between the couple persevered. A quick read, I read it in one sitting. A good escape from reality for a few minutes!

What an amazing story! I was so thoroughly caught up in Charlotte and James’ story that I simply could not put it down. The real-ness of the characters and the struggles of a wounded and disfigured soldier transcend the ages of time and connect so very easily to human feelings and reactions. The depth of the major characters (and the shallowness of Charlotte’s father) was so fully developed, I felt as if I was there, listening and feeling everything with them. It was so wonderful to see Charlotte, James and William (C’s brother) become their own person as they grew, matured and dealt with the challenges of life. It certainly pointed out the importance of friends and believers in one’s life. Perhaps this really is more of a fairytale than what probably would have happened in that day and age, but what a wonderful outlook on life it gave. It certainly is the reason I read Ms Pearson’s books ... because I am always filled with positivity and optimism. Thank-you Rose Pearson!

3 stars because, well written, heartbreaking. I admired Charlotte, a woman determined, compassionate. James not so much. For a man saying how much he loved Charlotte, was pretty much a coward. I liked that Charlotte had a happy marriage & had an adorable little son. James first decision was annoying enough, but to turn tail again was inexcusable. Again, it was Charlotte who had to go running to him. What he did to her was cruel. So much for his being deeply in love with her. He was right. Charlotte deserved a braver man.

A wonderful story which shows the nuances of life for women in recency times. Shows the constraints that conducted love and marriage of the men and women of those times. Loved that the lead character of the women was not a shrinking violet. Love recency romances like this that deals with love and relationships without always resorting to sharing all that goes on behind bedroom doors .

This was well written and did not have any annoying plot points in it. I enjoyed the interaction between three H and h and the family dynamics.

So far this is a good start to the series.

The ability to hide the fact that someone is not dead but hiding in a house with servants fully aware of his presence, yet keep it a secret for almost a decade, for the sake of a good story I can go along with. What is unacceptable are the numerous mistakes.
The lack of research is an irredeemable failure. There were no ‘steamer trunks’ because there were no passenger steam ships; the memorial service turned into
a funeral but women of the aristocracy did not attend interments; the list goes on.
This is the second book I’ve read of this author’s and I’ll read no more.
