This was a mystery / romance novel. A pleasant book to read but a little too predictable. I usually read grittier type mysteries and thriller, maybe that is why I found it a little to genteel for my taste.

this story was told well by the author about a case of blackmail and a teenager put way for a murder that was done by another. Can old love be rekindled after 13 years?

I adore Jacquie Walton and her Faith Martin books! She's probably one of the best series authors, whose main characters are strong, intelligent women! Her story lines are unique, believable and I've yet never been able to solve the who-done-it mystery! Then this book popped up on Amazon identifying author Jacquie Walton, who's more famously know as Faith Martin , as the writer behind yet another pseudonym Maxine Barry. This book was a huge disappointment! I'm still in disbelief it's the same author behind the stellar HIllary Greene and Jenny Starling books. So about my 2 star rating - yikes where to begin as I'm sure my review is clouded by my love and expectations from her Faith Martin books. Firstly the character of the "professional" bodyguard and his investigative company, falls so far short of what you'd expect, is a grievous misstep right from the beginning! Come on - he's off seducing a stranger first day on the bodyguard job? Seriously? These random strangers telepathically know they've just met their soulmate after sizing each other up in a minute? And where's the body this bodyguard is supposedly protecting from a killer? A killer - how serious does this professional take his job? The rest of the story has the bodyguard always sniffing after his lady love and almost never with his employer - whose life is supposedly in his hands! Just rubbish! The lovemaking scenes are nothing more than carb fillers, which you soon realize are just there to fatten up this weak story! Secondly, is the firm hired to protect the identity of the Manor House buyer thru subterfuge, as their clients life is in danger. So what happens - the aggrieved owner of the nearby Hotel, whose out to get this Manor House back into his family, managed to track down the company whose name is on the deed, find the companies owner, track him down to his home no less, and somehow pry the true purchasers name out of him! I'm aggravated with myself for expecting another brilliant Faith Martin quality book . That said, this book is a Chick lit book that should stay as far away from Jacquie Walton as possible - and her other pseudonyms! Sorry if my review is harsh - I'm no expert and can't solve a mystery before the end of a good book! This one however, was solvable from the first third of the way thru - not that it mattered.

I really wanted to like this book because it has a certain level of intrigue. As I read on, the narrative became unlikely and not believable. I chose to stop reading at Chapter 9, because my time is worth more than this book can offer. I am very disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting murder mystery. Not too complex.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 25, 2020
Not quite the tangled web that I have come to expect from Faith Martin, but still a very enjoyable read.
But with so few characters involved in this well written story I found the outcome very predictable after a couple of chapters.
    Loved the romantic theme though.
