Shifting Shadows (Metal & Magic) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 332 ratings

A werewolf haunted by his past, and a human with no memory of his.

Lead enforcer of the Ironheld werewolf pack, Deckard Warren doesn’t trust easily and guards his territory with a wrath as unforgiving as he is. When a rival pack chases an unknown human into Ironheld territory, Deck knows the man could be his mate. He also knows he’ll never admit to it. A man like him doesn’t deserve the kind of happiness a mate could bring, after all.

The only thing Colt remembers is running. With his memories hidden behind an unyielding black veil in his mind, Colt has no choice but to trust the gruff werewolf who offers him shelter and protection. Deck may be the most intimidating man Colt’s ever met, but despite his lack of memories, he’s sure he’s never wanted anyone more.

With shadows and rumors moving through The Between, will Deck and Colt find a way to stand together or be torn apart when all their enemies are brought to light?

Shifting Shadows is the second novel in the Metal & Magic series, dystopian urban fantasy romance. Each book contains an HEA, but the storyline is ongoing. This series is best read in order. This second edition has been extended and re-edited.

IT’S SO SWEET! Deck’s way of caring for Colt, is just so PURE. I can see why another reviewer was asking for a Deck of their own. This book would be worth reading for just Deck & Colt, but the plot line is engaging & it’s fun to see the world that Michelle Frost’s creating continue to expand. Yes, there’s a bit of a cliffhanger. Cliffhanger lite. & the next book won’t come out until freaking September. But I’d still say this one is worth a read.

The Metal & Magic book series was ok for the most part.

Although I could not read the Prequel titled Revenant, because it was never published in paperback, so I didn’t learn about the foundation of the story before reading the main books.

The rest of the books, Metal Heart, Shifting Shadows and Metal Soul, followed the same kind of synopsis, where there are shifters and other paranormal creatures, and the main characters find their lifelong mate, and then they have adventures. Kind of similar to all of Catherine Lievens stories, only maybe slightly better.

The stories were somewhat interesting, and attention captivating, during the action and adventure parts, however, the graphic play by play sex scene descriptions were repetitious, unneeded and mind numbing, and had to be skipped over in order to enjoy and get back to the story.

Book 1, Metal Heart, was an ok read, and got me immersed in the story, its characters, and the world in which they lived. Unfortunately, the story’s ending was left somewhat open, without an actual ending and was then continued in the next book. This was a bit upsetting.

Book 2, Shifting Shadows, was a lot better and was enjoyed even more. I actually looked forward to reading book three and immersing myself more into this world. Unfortunately, once again, the story’s ending was left somewhat open, without an actual ending and was then continued in the next book. This again, was a bit upsetting.

However, Book 3, Metal Soul soon descended into a three-way thruple kind of relationship that I can’t even begin to relate to, as well as holes and a bit of unbelievability in the story, even though it’s completely paranormal fantasy.

I can’t understand why so many authors keep writing books about 3 way relationships. As far as I know, the amount of those kinds of relationships in the gay community has got to be like 1 or 2 percent at most.

Most relationship oriented people, in general, want a monogamous loving relationship. As soon as the author went on and on about the characters and their 3 way relationship, I wanted to stop reading and put the book down. But, I wanted to see what the end of the story was like so I finished the book, skipping over the over the top play by play sex scene descriptions and mushy lovey dovey stuff that made me want to gag.

I read books with gay characters in them because sometimes it’s difficult to relate to so much heterosexual love stories. Call me narrow minded, but, because of this author writing about a 3 way relationship I could not relate to, she ruined to book series for me, and I’ll likely not read anything from Michelle Frost again.

I love this story. I was curious how it would connect with Bram’s group and it certainly did! I am loving this world. Colt is so innocent. I am so happy he found himself.

This was pretty typical wolf shifter romance. Deckard recognizes Colt as his mate immediately but for reasons doesn’t tell him right away. It wasn’t bad, and it was proofread and polished up for publication, which is always appreciated, but it wasn’t at all original. If you like this general story, read it on KU, but I personally wouldn’t buy it.

Kind of a cliffy at the end there that just left me waiting more. Deck and Colt have a brother to rescue and I'm hoping their journey continues in the next book even if they're not the MCs. A solid addition to the series.

I enjoyed this but went through most of it wondering how it tied in with book 1; none of the characters were familiar or only vaguely, and I thought maybe I should have read book one again. I kept going and really enjoyed the mystery, danger, and suspense despite this. It was in the epilogue when both stories tied together and I was on the same page! Now I really need to read the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting mm series gets even more interesting

WOW. Just finished this book and what do I say? Werewolves and mages are the main characters in this story but there is so much more happening around them. Deck and Colt are possible mates but have so many problems between the two of them especially because Colt doesn’t remember anything about himself. WOW again will be what you think when you finally find out who he is and what is going on. I had to stop reading and digest the whole thing. This story is developing in really unusual ways and the world building is fascinating. I feel a bit like I’m still back in the book so if it sounds like I’m blathering on it’s because I’m still going WOW in my head. If you can’t tell I highly recommend this series but you definitely need to read the books in order. There is also a free prequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Same characters new path
Reviewed in Canada on December 5, 2022
This new version of this book really polishes up the overall arching story in connection to the rest of the series, while keeping the core of it with the main couple the same.

Deckard has been having difficulty in his pack since losing his sister a year ago and not wanting to step in as alpha. Now he finds a man running into pack territory with no memory, though the man is clearly his mate. Colt doesn't know anything about his life but he finds love and acceptance with Deck and his pack, even as both outside and inside forces start to cause trouble. Soon it becomes clear that the trouble is somehow related to Colt and his past, and Deck and Colt will both have to confront it.

There is a more direct connection at the end of this to the next book, leaving a bit of an open ending as the mysteries are revealed but the actions to be taken are still to happen. It brings a solid connection to the last book and continues the story on for the series. Very curious to see where it will go!
