Master of Longbourn: A Sequel to Mr. Darcy's Comfort (Dash of Darcy and Companions Collection Book 10) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 205 ratings

From awkward and unlovable to handsome and loved.

Large, awkward, unlovable, and destined to fail -- that is who William Collins has always been told he was, and while he might have accepted the first three monikers, he's worked hard to ensure the last one does not become true.

Kitty Bennet has never lacked for attention from gentlemen, but while she's proficient at flirting, she has never had her heart touched by any of the potential suitors who have sat in Longbourn's sitting room.

That is her heart was never touched until now when the awkwardly endearing heir to Longbourn takes up residence in her home. But how does one encourage a gentleman to love her when he's seemingly unaffected by fluttering lashes and demure looks?

And how can someone as inept, as Collins thinks he is, ever win the heart of a lady as charming as Kitty Bennet?

It will take determination and a little help as well as the realization that sometimes the battle for the heart is played out in the mind.

Master of Longbourn is part of Leenie Brown's Dash of Darcy and Companions collection of Pride and Prejudice inspired novellas. If you like well-written sweet romance featuring an unlikely hero who must blossom from ugly duckling to majestic swan, then you will love this story about Collins overcoming the edicts of his father to become what he wishes to be while claiming the lady who is the desire of his heart.

So, put the kettle on, grab your copy of Master of Longbourn, and slip into a world of sweet and endearing romantic indulgence today.

Review

This novella is part of my Dash of Darcy and Companions Collection. These Pride and Prejudice inspired stories are quick, sweet reads designed to fit perfectly into a busy life.
Dash of Darcy titles in this collection will focus on Darcy and Elizabeth, while each Companion Story will focus on characters from Pride and Prejudice other than Darcy and Elizabeth and will be a sequel to a Dash of Darcy story.

The books in this collection are numbered in the order in which they were published and contain a complete HEA (happily ever after) for the hero and heroine. However, you may wish to know that all Companion Stories will reference events in the Dash of Darcy story to which they are a sequel, so reading those stories together will provide the greatest enjoyment.

From the Author

This novella is part of my Dash of Darcy and Companions Story Collection. These Pride and Prejudice inspired stories are quick, sweet reads designed to fit perfectly into a busy life.

Dash of Darcy titles in this collection will focus on Darcy and Elizabeth, while each Companion Story, such as Master of Longbourn, focuses on characters from Pride and Prejudice other than Darcy and Elizabeth and is a sequel to a Dash of Darcy story. While references will be made to events which happened in the previous story (Mr. Darcy's Comfort in this case), each sequel contains a complete happily ever after for the hero and heroine.

I am delighted that you have chosen to read this
Companion Story and am excited to have you discover a different sort of Mr. Collins, whom I have come to refer to as my dear Mr. Collins.

Happy Reading!

Leenie Brown's heroes, when growing up, were authors, and the worlds they painted with words were (and still are) her favourite playgrounds! Now, as an adult, she spends much time in the regency world, playing with the characters from her favourite Jane Austen novels and those of her own creation.

When she is not traipsing down a trail in an attempt to keep up with her imagination, Leenie resides in the beautiful province of Nova Scotia with her two sons and her very own Mr. Brown (a wonderful mix of all the best of Darcy, Bingley and Edmund with a healthy dose of the teasing Mr. Tilney and just a dash of the scolding Mr. Knightley).

I never thought it would be possible for me to like Mr. Collins but this story managed that exact task. His backstory shows the reason for his awkward personality and consequently makes him a more enjoyable character.
In all of the Pride & Prejudice variations that I've read, my favorites are the ones that tell the story from the gentleman's perspective. Leenie Brown is excellent at telling stories this way, all while making you laugh, cry, and sometimes cringe. I've yet to read one of her variations that I haven't enjoyed immensely.

This is the first book by this author that I have read. I enjoyed it very much and am now intrigued by the series. This novella is about Mr. Collins. A Mr. Collins that I have never dreamed of. Loved this version of him. He is good and kind. He is also awkward and insecure in social settings. And he is very lovable. The book also shows a very mature 17 year old Kitty. She is still willing to placate Lydia but she doesn't follow whatever Lydia says and does. And while she still enjoys seeing a dashing Red Coat she also recognizes that there is much more to happiness. It was an enjoyable variation of Pride and Prejudice.

I love a good story where characters you think you know from cannon, surprise you. This story doesn’t dramatically change Mr. Collins- but it gave him more depth, more insight into his character and his history. This made infinitely more sense than the obsequious, fawning, and yes, oafish Mr. Collins from the original book. Yet, he wasn’t the only one - the circumstances in this variation allowed many characters to be seen in a different light….which led some to come to the point a whole lot earlier than expected. I thoroughly enjoyed this variation and would recommend it!

I loved this P&P variation which features Mr. Collins in a new and positive light. Using the very attractive man on the book's cover and keeping him in my mind's eye, allowed me to build the story around him in place of the sniveling parson that we've come to know in the 5-hr classic P&P of 1995 (Although the part was brilliantly played by David Bamber). He sought out the assistance of Bingley and Darcy for his personal improvement, worked with Mr. Bennet to learn his new role as an estate owner, and gained the trust of the Bennet sisters. He transformed from an insecure, gawky man who condescended to everyone to a confident, considerate member and 'son' of the Bennet family. It also gave Kitty a prominent role, where she was always a minor character in P&P and the many variations I've read.

There are a few words from other centuries that don't fit this era and several proofreading typos that interrupt a good read. There is one technical error in Chapter 8 regarding the blooming time of peonies. Peonies, grown from a bulb, bloom only in May and June in the northern hemisphere, thus they would not provide 'a summer filled with beauty.'

I very much enjoyed this story and my only complaint is I wanted more. More interactions between Mr. Collins and all the other characters. Each interaction was great and so I wanted more.

And I just need to say, Mary so owed Mr. Collins an apology and we never got one.

This was a lovely book about Mr Collins. He is still rather uncertain about himself and bumbling but not a fool. His pursuit of one of the Bennet daughters was entertaining to read as was Bingley and Darcy tutoring him how to do so. Five stars and recommend for anyone who likes JAFF.

This was a very different variation than I’ve read before. I dearly loved this Mr. Collins, as well as Kitty, Mr. Bennett, Elizabeth, Darcy, Jane, and Bingley.
A must read for lovers of Pride and Prejudice variations!

The McArthur quote describes the Reverend Mr. Collins as we usually see him in P&P and in JAFF stories: bowing in “respect” to Lady Catherine to the exclusion of all others.

This time, William Collins is an adult struggling with his inner child – his abused inner child.

He that respects himself is safe from others; he wears a coat of mail that none can pierce. ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Young William is daily belittled by his Father. The image his parent projected into his consciousness is what William believes is reality: that he is ugly and awkward; stupid and worthless and especially unlovable. He will be the last of the Bennet line to live at Longbourn since no one will ever agree to marry him.

But what if William Collins discovers different role models? What if he finds male “superiors” he may emulate? What if he is given advice? Darcy and Bingley step up with fashion tips (Bingley) and estate advice (Darcy). Can Mr. Collins improve? Will his search for love be fruitful?

I recommend this short story of an ugly duckling to all readers of JAFF.

    SPOILER
I wish the epilogue had included Mr. Collins taking the name “Bennet” – Mr. Bennet had referred to him as Son and in a few short months had done much good as a Father. I wish “Miss Bennet” had become “Mrs. Bennet” (ghastly thought indeed).

I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence. ~ Frederick Douglass
