The Municipality of Lost Souls: A Spellbinding Gothic Ghost Story set in Victorian England (The Haunted Durscombe Novels) Kindle Edition
Vengeful souls don’t stay dead
They taunt the minds of the living until they throw themselves from clifftops.
Yet death turns a profit when you drive ships onto rocks to plunder riches.
Agatha knows one thing for sure: respect the dead.
Especially those who did not die quietly.
Now, a lonely witch has conjured a young sailor’s soul.
And woken them all.
Only Agatha knows the truth.
She hears it in the whispers drifting across the waves.
She hears it in the crackle of the flames.
And the marauders will stop at nothing to silence her.
Shh … Listen …
The Dead Are Coming …

About the author

Genre-hopping introvert and word witch living somewhere between the forest and the sea in East Devon, UK.
Jeannie finds inspiration everywhere: myths, stories and songs, people watching, a word here, a look there, but mainly in the landscape. Devon has it all - rocky coast, pebble and sandy beaches, winding lanes and picture perfect cottages, cliffs and forest.
A good day for Jeannie means a blustery wind, racing waves and salty rain. She lives with her husband and two dogs, make a lot of soup, plays too many computer games and loves watching movies.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2021I came upon this book after reading the Wonky Inn and Pound Dog series. This was so different from her cozy mysteries that I was pleasantly surprised. The Municipality of Lost Souls was like a breath of fresh air. I spent my early 20s and 30s devouring many a great horror and psychological thriller and this was right up there with the quality of early Stephen King novels. The character development was intriguing and left you to try to figure out the events that led up to this point. I also enjoyed the novels Beyond the Veil and Crone for different reasons but I believe that this one was far superior to the other two. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a psychological thriller, it kept my interest from it's beginning to it's very end!

- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2021I'm looking forward to reading rest of series. I enjoyed the style of the writing in spite of the warning that this was English instead of American. Good read. Really enjoyed this.

This is book number two in this awesome series that I have read and I can not wait to see what this author will write about next. - Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2021Prior to reading The Municipality of Lost Souls, I'd primarily ready Jeannie Wycherley's more comedic, lighter paranormal mysteries. This book has a very different tone, more gothic in style. However, Ms. Wycherley's terrific world building and character development skills are definitely on display as much in this book as in her lighter stories. This is a period piece, set in Victorian England. It is very atmospheric and darker in tone and mood. The book is intended to be the start to a new series, or at least a two part story as this book ends on a cliffhanger. I'm not a fan of cliffhangers as a rule; however, I am a fan of Ms. Wycherley's writing and trust her to make the conclusion to this particular cliffhanger worth the wait.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2020As foretold when they were young, three cousins learned of their fate from their grandmother. And even though they tried to escape it, destiny will not be changed. One cousin was treated badly, pushed to be better and move up in society and she was never happy. The other two found happiness but they couldn’t escape. One cousin had a happy marriage and then everything blew up because of the evil men who run the town. One of them also contributed to the other cousins unhappiness. The third cousin left the town to live a life away from the talk and her grandmother’s witchyness. But she is brought back to help save it. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2020TRIGGER WARNING: This book briefly has scenes of Rape, Abuse, and Suicide it is not graphic in detail but may not be suitable for more sensitive readers.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. However that in no way impacts my opinions on this book I will be giving an honest review. I really enjoyed how at the very beginning of this book it had a list of characters like you would see in a screenplay or playbill. Having this list of characters was really helpful at times to flip back to when your reading throughout the story since this book does tend to switch point of views between characters once or twice every chapter. If you are not a fan of books that switch point of views multiple times throughout the entire book as well as having a slow start then this might not be the book for you. However if you can look past that and continue reading you will find a great read for Historical fiction fans who enjoy suspense mystery books that had themes of witchcraft and the paranormal. This book does have a bittersweet ending that can leave viewers with an unfinished feeling end to this book but all in all it was a very great read that keeps you on your toes until the very end.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2020As I began this novel, my first reaction was relief that I was taking me to a world I wanted to be in, the coast of England in Victorian times. I had recently read books that took me to rather squalid worlds. I continued to feel that way about this work even when it, surprisingly to me, became a horror novel because there were also characters who were such good people.
I love atmospheric works and this is most definitely well done in that way. Paranormal events are particularly handled well. In fact, I really went back and forth over whether I should give this novel five stars, a rating I reserve for well- written books that say something important. This does that, but can come across as rather preachy. If you are vehemently opposed to LGBT issues, you are not going to care for this title. Also I found the beginning a little muddled. We started with Agatha, and then left her and I wasn’t sure what the focus was for awhile.
At the end of this work is a mention that a second novel will be set in this world. I will be looking for it because I agree with the author’s views of what makes a good person and I like the setting.
I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest opinion.

This is totally different from all Jeannie Wycherley books I have read before and not the type I would normally choose to read, but it totally captivated me. I need to know how what happened to the characters next. Fab read

Enjoyed this book immensely. I found the ‘hero’s’ very likeable and the ‘villains’ vile!
I read this in a day (awake until the early hours to finish it). Descriptions of the town made me feel as though as I was there, watching the story unfold, feeling the chill of a stormy night, watching the horror of a ship ‘wrecking’ and being destroyed by the elements. Differences in the class system shown through the hard lives and the losses of those battling to make a living in a fishing town and the expectations of women from different social standings are touched upon but not overly so. Definitely one to read on a rainy afternoon (lots in England!).
