A Vince Torelli Novel: MP - A Novel of Vietnam (A Vince Torelli Mystery) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 42 ratings

As Vincent Torelli stepped off the plane at Bien Hoa Air Base, South Vietnam, in June 1967, he was almost overwhelmed by the stench in the hot, humid air. Drafted into the armed forces five months earlier, he still can't comprehend how he ended up in this place, now a Military Policeman assigned to the 557th MP Co. at Long Binh Post just outside Bien Hoa City.

His year-long tour of duty in Vietnam changes him from a somewhat naïve young man to a battle-hardened veteran. Through unlucky chance, Vince becomes involved in the ferocious '68 Tet offensive, barely surviving the night. He sees and experiences things he could never have imagined before ending up in Vietnam.

This is Vince's story... survival, coping with the hell he's facing, the sorrow of lives lost, and the friendships he formed.

John Schembra was born in Corning, New York in 1948 but grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. Drafted into the Army in 1969, he spent a year in Vietnam as a Military Policeman with the 557th MP Co., 18th MP Brigade. After completing his military service, he joined the Pleasant Hill Police Department, retiring in 2001 as a Sergeant after 30 years of service. John's experiences in Vietnam as a Military Policeman provided the basis for his first book, M.P., A Novel of Vietnam. It is a work of fiction based in part on his personal experiences during his tour of duty with the 557th MP Co. M.P. was awarded the finalist certificate for Best Action-Adventure novel of 2004 by EPIC writers group. His time in law enforcement provided the basis for his second novel, Retribution, the story of a vigilante killer at loose in San Francisco. The SFPD Inspector pursuing the killer, Vincent Torelli, is the M.P. from John's first book, 25 years later. Retribution was awarded the Silver Medal for writing excellence by the Military Writer's Society. John's third book, Diplomatic Immunity, was published in 2012 and continues the adventures of Homicide Inspector Torelli, as he investigates the killings of foreign consuls in San Francisco by a very talented, deadly sniper. His fourth book, Sin Eater, is a stand alone novel about a series of murders, with a supernatural twist, in a small California central valley college town, investigated by a campus police officer and a history professor.Sin Eater has won three writing awards. John's fifth novel, Blood Debt, is the fourth in the Vince Torelli series, in which Vince is stalked by the Tennessee family of a suspect killed in a shoot-out in San Francisco. It won third place in the PSWA 2017 writing competition. John's sixth book, An Echo of Lies, is a supernatural thriller about demonic possession and is currently at the publishers. It was awarded third place in the PSWA 2020 writing competition, and should be released mid-2021. John's seventh book, The List, is the fifth in the Vince Torelli series, and is the story of a killer seeking revenge, twenty years later, on a group of boys who mercilessly bullied him in middle school. It, too, is currently at the publishers and should be releaded near the end of 2021. John is currently hard at work on his eighth book, as yet untitled, another Vince Torelli thriller.

After John's retirement from the police department, he became the lead Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) instructor for the Contra Costa Sheriff's Office, teaching emergency driving and pursuit driving at the academy and to officers all through the county and state. John has been designated by the State of California as a subject matter expert in Emergency Vehicle Operations. He has been married for 48 years and has two grown children living in Sacramento. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, golfing, fishing and traveling with his family.

    Very informative

Great story brought back many memories of being an MP in Vietnam in 1967 through 1968. Only thing off was that the 557 MP company during that time frame worked LBJ stockade and chaser duties. They only exception was they had the 148 platoon assigned to the USARV headquarters at Long Binh The 148th platoon of the 557 MP company also furnished a squad to the delta. The activities and action sound more like the 720 MP company who were quartered across the street at the Long Binh

I ordered this book because I was an MP in Vietnam, however, the story is much more than that. It is about war, comradery, heroics, patriotism, duty, and full of emotions only known by those who have been in battle. The action is fast pace and the characters are true to life. The author puts the reader right smack dab in the fray of things - almost as if you were there. The dialogue is both somber and witty. The book is definitely a page turner. I was left with not only a nostalgic feeling, but the satisfaction of an excellent read! If you enjoy military history, action, intriguing characters or just an exciting book to read - buy this one. You won't be disappointed!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book about a military policeman's year in Vietnam. Having served in Vietnam in 1967 as an MP at Long Binh and Bien Hoa, I could easily relate to this story as it was being told. I found myself flashing back to my youth many times as I read John Schembra's novel. Gripping and well written, I found that once I began reading the book I could not put it down. You don't have to be a Vietnam vet to enjoy this book. This is an excellent novel about coming of age in a country torn by war, and I highly recommend it.

I don't read many books on Vietnam War. Being a Nam Vet with two tours, I find most Nam book either full of B.S. or to close to home. However I did read this one and as a former member of the "six penny nickle", (615th MP Co.) I can say Mr. Schema is right on the money. The places are, or were, there. The people are real. The incidents ,did or could, happen.

MP is one of those books that once you start reading it you can't put it down. The way it was written made you feel like you were actually there and was going through what the characters were going through! Each page kept you wanting to read more. All I can say is AWESOME!! Highly recommended! Can't wait to read the next book.

A well written story of the role the military police played in the Vietnam war. Rarely has this story been told.
It clearly details the strong bonds formed by men at war. As a Vietnam veteran and military policeman I too experienced much of what was described. An excellent read

I really enjoyed this book. Author John Schembra's own experiences undoubtedly helped him write this fast paced war story. I recommend it to anyone looking for action in a book!
