My Summer In Seoul (A My Summer In Seoul Novel) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 490 ratings

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken comes a standalone new adult romance set in the competitive world of K-pop.

It’s not all K-dramas and happily ever afters.

Intern with Korea’s number one record label? Yes, please.
Find out there’s a huge scandal I need to help “manage”… not so much.
Add in the fact that I don’t recognize the “superstars” of the label and think they’re interns…
And my dream job quickly becomes more of a nightmare.

But I’m in Seoul, the one place that is beginning to feel more and more like home...
Except it isn’t home, and the drama surrounding the biggest K-pop group in the world, SWT, is consuming my every moment.
Spoiler alert. They hate me.
Everything I do is wrong: wrong clothes, wrong honorifics, wrong manners.
Till the leader of SWT takes pity on me.
But pity is dangerous when it comes from someone as beautiful as him.

Every SWT member is gorgeous, perfect, and cultivated to be an idol… lethal to a girl’s heart.
And sanity.
But fame plus a perfect face and voice don’t equal an easy life. As their comeback nears, the stakes rise higher.
Suicide watch…
Angry fans…
Threats…

All I want to do is survive.
But the price for survival might mean losing my heart.
And like a character in a K-drama, I’m not sure if there will be an actual happily ever after…
Or simply a lesson learned.

    𝗧𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲: My Summer in Seoul
    𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿: Rachel Van Dyken
    𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: ☆☆☆☆☆ 5/5

What do you say when a book just takes your breath away? My Summer in Seoul is a real page turner and it’s no surprise this book is getting a TV adaption and I know I will definitely be watching it. I don’t know why I keep starting to read a Rachel Van Dyken book when I know there aren’t enough hours for me to finish it and get enough sleep. I mean who is stupid enough to do that? Well hi, my name is stupid and this obviously means I did not get enough sleep lol. What I did get, was the satisfaction of finishing this book in one sitting and enjoying myself immensely! So this is your warning, do not start this book unless you plan to finish it (soon) lol. I have learned so much about the world of K-pop through this book, it also included a K-pop Glossary which I found extremely helpful. You really don’t have to know anything about K-pop when starting this book. Furthermore, this book is full with angst, drama, love and humor. The characters are complex and have layers upon layers. I also found it easy to connect with the characters when reading. I especially loved how Grace developed a friendship with the guys, those cute moments they have… my heart just exploded. I can’t help, but hope and pray that Rachel Van Dyken will bless us with more books about the other idols! Rachel if you read this: pretty please!!! This book was just perfection, which means I just will recommend it to everyone, especially those who love K-pop or are interested into learning more about it!

    What a great romance read!
So different from the other NA romances out there right now too. It was a breath of fresh air!

I do not love rock star romances, but K-pop isn’t rock and the idols are not rockers. It’s a different world COMPLETELY.

I’m not familiar AT ALL with K-pop . I like a few BTS songs but that’s literally it.

I could tell Van Dyken did her research on the topic. The entire K-pop world sounds incredibly complex and Rachel delivered a plethora of information to the reader without it feeling like an info dump.

The culture shock and clash that Grace endured felt genuine. Graces struggles made it very obvious to me that I probably have no business going to Korea myself because I would have been in way over my head. Lol

I was also incredibly unaware at how taboo mental health is in different parts of the world. Ignorance is bliss I suppose. The US is very open (yes recently I know) to mental health and mental illness struggles. So for someone so young (Lukas) to be struggling with depression, and for all the guys to be under such immense pressure with literally no outlet or support was shocking. It was heartbreaking too. Because this novel was based on the authors research, that means that there are K-pop idols out there right now suffering the same pitfalls of the life style as SWT was. I hate that for them. It’s frustrating and infuriating and made me emotional on their behalf.

Grace was an excellent heroine. She was kind and funny and flawed. But she learned and grew from her experiences and she never gave up. I loved that she wasn’t super human, she was just a kind person. She wasn’t overly remarkable in a way that made her unattainable, she was someone that people gravitated towards because she was a good person and fun to be around. I loved her.

Lukas was a great enemy to have but an even better love interest. He was moody and broody and a little dominating and it was easy to see why Grace was drawn to him. The big switchy twist at the end of the book was a big shock to me. I did not see it coming. And I was a little disappointed in a certain tall blonde haired K-pop Idol.
I adored Sookie and Kai and Jay. I wanted more insight to them. Especially Jay- I would love love love to see him find his footing in his “relationship”
Rae deserves love and I want to see him come into himself.
I’m also curious to see what caused Solia to be the way she is because she was pretty insufferable for most of the book.
*I feel like we might be getting set up for a series about SWT and I wouldn’t be upset one bit about it 😊

I love everything Rachel Van Dyken writes she's absolutely incredible, this book was next level. This was my introduction to K-pop I spent the book in between feeling so awful that the idols have to go through what they do, that their fans can actually black list them and feeling awful for Grace. She had culture shock of going into a different country but also not realizing that the fans have control of the groups success and that a scandal can truly destroy them.
I really loved the characters so much. I felt so sorry for Grace throughout Lukas being an absolute jerk to her. I also at the same time really like Lukas. He was absolutely struggling. I loved all of the guys so much and do hope we see them each get their HEA.
You can tell the love that the author has for K-Pop and how much research she did! This was a book that I wasn't expecting but was truly amazing. I thought I'd struggle to keep everyone straight but the author made it so easy!
I'd give this more than 5 stars if I could.
I received an arc for my opinion

I’ve been captivated by the K-pop world through this amazing story. Grace is graduating and her dream is work in the music industry but she is struggling to get her foot in the door anywhere. When her Uncle Sui calls and offers her an internship with his company in Seoul, she jumps at the chance. What she gets is a crazy, intense ride. From the moment she lands in Seoul, it’s a land of culture shock and full-on work. Everyone expected her to know the traditions and rules but her father didn’t teach her the Korean ways. As she works to keep one of the hottest K-pop bands on schedule and away from scandal as they prepare for their comeback, she has to learn the hard way how to navigate the rules. For Lucas, he knows how to hide what he’s really feeling as he pursues his passion for music. But even he struggles as he deals with a scandal and family pressure while living the K-pop dream. Meeting Grace rattles his resolve. He wants to hate her but there is something about this uncouth, unfiltered and bold American. I love how this story fully immersed me in the K-pop universe and allowed me to feel like I was part of the story as I rode every emotion these characters lived.

    Amazing five star read!

Rachel VD has gone above and beyond to research everything Korean to create a fresh, addictive and exciting read.

I went in blind knowing nothing about kpop other than my sister briefly introducing me to the world of BTS.

Enter Grace, music student about to start interning and offered a summer internship at her uncles record label in Seoul. An American girl In Korea. She knows no social ques or Language and is literally trying to hold her head above water with the guys in the band who make it VERY hard for her. They are truly awful! Will she succeed?

There is so many twists and turns in this book and you become so involved with the five band members and grace and all of the issues they independently have going on.

Rachel touches on some important, heavy topics in this book but it is done tastefully and respectfully without taking the importance away from the issues.

The book definitely leaves you tasty for more and seemingly like we will get more in the form of other characters.

I am so glad I took a risk and read this new release recommended by one of my favourite authors. This was a fun and fresh read with a really good level of angst. I am now going to scour the kindle store for something to cure this book hangover!

This book is everything! From the moment Grace lands in Seoul to the perfect ending - this book is everything! I didn’t know much about K-Pop, except that I really like that one Stray Kids song. And now I’ve got a new found respect for the work they put in, and a whole new Spotify playlist! Grace is gorgeous and the way she reacts to everything is just perfect. The romance was sweet and intense and awesome, even with the almost love triangle. I can’t wait to see it onscreen!

5.0 out of 5 stars Top 5 favorite of the year and longest review of my life
Reviewed in Germany on December 15, 2021
Wow! Thank god I started reading this when I knew I had the time to do it in one sitting, I literally couldn’t put it down.

I already knew I was gonna like this because I’m a huge lover of music especially K-pop but I didn’t expect to love this so much as I do. I can say for sure that this is in Top 5 books of the year, hands down.

The amount of research that Rachel did to write this story shows on every page. What you read here is definitely a reality for a lot of people and it hurts me to say it because we all wanna believe that the idols are what we see, that they are always happy and whatnot but we don’t really know what happens behind closed doors. We don’t know the struggle, the pain and the emotional and physical stress that they go through just to be able to do what they love, music. But that’s what Rachel brings us, reality with a little bit of fiction and lots of sexual tension.

Those last 15% undone me. I was bawling my eyes out for Lucas and I am now writing this review and hoping that I can express how much I needed this and I didn’t even knew it.

Grace is such a kind soul and seeing what she goes through and coming strong on the other side really makes me proud of her. She really cares about people and honestly I relate so much to her. Her opinion on subjects like, why idols can’t date, why they can’t do what they want and most importantly why can’t they love who they love. It just breaks my heart all over again and cry because it’s just terrible to be you but not be able to be you in front of other people especially people that you love.

Lucas has my heart and soul! He’s just bent, not broken. Witnessing all that he goes through , his thoughts and the way he acts on them just breaks me… Grace was definitely a saving Grace for him but like I said this is so much worse because this happens all the time in real life but things like mental Heath, depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts are not talked about enough.
Grace said something to Lucas that couldn’t be truer. You can’t help someone until they are ready to help themselves. Ain’t that the truth? No matter what you do in this type of situation , you don’t really help until they are ready to accept it and face the problem head on.

I do have my idols , my biggest one being BTS (proud ARMY) and I understand all the logistics behind why they should and shouldn’t do stuff but from the bottom of my heart I just want them to be happy with whomever they choose. Why would I be offended because they love someone and date them? We, the fans, will always have a special place in their hearts no matter who they date and such. Part of being a fan is supporting whatever your idol/artist do and whom ever they choose to love.
Seeing them happy and listening their music makes me happy so why would someone destroy that beautiful relationship between artist/idol and fan?

Rachel, you knocked it out of the park and I’m proud of you and despite all of what you made me feel (I cried a river honestly ) I’m grateful. I’m grateful that you remember me to be kind to others but also help them and give them some tough love to those when need it like Grace did to Lucas.
I think this is one of your best work and I love you for being you.

I’m sorry if this review is all over the place but it’s currently 2:30 am and I’m a mess with so many feelings all over the place but that’s what’s makes you realize what incredible book you just read, right?

WOW!! Rachel Van Dyken has absolutely done her research with this one and she absolutely nailed it. I absolutely loved the book and it gave me that same in awe feeling as I had when reading Fashion Jungle.
I didn't know what to expect but a few pages in and I was hooked.
The characters and their characteristics were on point. I couldn't put the book down. I loved the boys but I especially loved Lucas and Grace. The development of their relationship was brilliant, I even swooned a little.
They totally hit me in the feels. I laughed, I cried and held my breath a few times. I just wanted to keep reading, devouring the book in record time. I can't recommend this book enough. Please write more from this world RVD!!

I don’t follow K-pop so this was all new to me and whilst I wont be running to find out more real life K-pop I did enjoy this book and would happily read more from this world again. Once again RVD delivers a really enjoyable book. It did take a few chapters to hook me but after that, I was all in. I actually found myself gravitating to all the characters in the book as a whole rather than just being invested in the main romantic couple and for that I hope we get to read more from this world soon. I would happily suggest giving this book a go.
