Marshal versus the Assassins: A Foreworld SideQuest (The Foreworld Saga) Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 102 ratings

Sir William the Marshal, legend in his own time, has promised to go on crusade, a vow made to his Young King as he lay dying. But when the Oliphant, legendary war horn of Roland, is stolen by the lethal Assassins, he’s charged with returning the relic in order to stop the very thing he’d vowed to undertake—a crusade; this one engineered by the thieves.

With his small band of trusted companions—Sir Baldwin, his tourney compatriot; Eustace, his squire; and Henrik, the giant Norseman—William sets out to take back the relic. But treachery abounds, and when William loses two of his companions, he discovers an unlikely ally—Da’ud, an Assassin himself, bent on taking the Oliphant from the heretic faction that has stolen it. The three fight their way across land, sea, and desert, only to find themselves facing an army…and the Oliphant within their grasp.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Of the many excellences in Marshal Versus the Assassins, M. Harold Page’s story of a real historical crusader trying to avert a crusade, the most remarkable is Page’s rendering of physical combat ... What Page does more and better than any other fantasy writer I know is intertwine the viewpoint character’s complete sensory experience during combat. As a practitioner and historian of Europe’s lost martial arts traditions, Page knows in muscle memory how each weapon his crusader characters use feels in the hand, in the heft, and in the mailed body it strikes." —Blackgate.com

About the Author

M. Harold Page’s fascination with the legendary Sir William the Marshal—described by thirteenth-century contemporaries as “the greatest knight that ever lived”—dates back to his childhood in Edinburgh, Scotland. He holds a master’s degree in Classics and Medieval History and is a veteran student of Historical European Martial Arts. His tales of medieval heroism are fueled by his love of history and heavy doses of Viking metal, which he listens to while writing. Though widely traveled, he is a family man who still calls Edinburgh home. He currently teaches German longsword for the city’s Dawn Duellists Society. An avid music lover, Page once fronted a blues band and can still play a mean Chuck Berry on the piano.

Outstandingly good medieval adventure story. Fast, fun, authentically detailed. And I am reliably informed that the author's royalties go straight to buying swords and armour, so buy it with a clean conscience.

This is a thrilling adventure. A new view on the Bretheren from an outsider. The fighting is brutal and beautiful in its description. The momentum of the book leans into the story. Passion for duty balances multifaceted decisions offering the reader a mystery throughout while revealing a complex backdrop and issuing forth a plot driven by the central character. I truly look forward to anything else I can find by Mr. Page. Many thanks to the author for bringing this into being.

Another side story in the Foreworld Saga world, this one featuring William the Marshall as he is sent on a quest to retrieve an artifact of his dead Lord. It's a decent tale, although not much is done with the characters, then again it is a short story featuring an historical figure so not much could be done I suppose. The link to the main Foreworld saga is very tenuous at best, he's sent on the Quest by the man who tried to train him to be part of the Shield Brethren and that's about it. But as a story itself it's a decent tale to kill a couple of afternoons.

Harold Page's introduction of William Marshall to the Foreworld Universe is very well made, indeed. In William, Page creates a character who is well drawn, and easy for the reader to like. Page's erudition concerning the Medieval Period is evident, with the rich tapestry that was Medieval life always on display. Finally, Page has left enough unresolved story lines to make the sequel required reading for readers of this story and much anticipated by this reviewer.

Another side quest installment in our fantasy world of knights and brigands. Always good to keep the back-story filled. Don't look for profound prose, rater look for the satisfaction of knowing the "Bretheren" just a little better. Fast read.
