I kept a smile on my face throughout th book as this is full of witty repartee and an interesting cast of characters, especially Melusine.and some of the secondary characters. I agree with a previous reviewer who commented that Gerald, the Hero, was not as fully developed, but I think that may have been in keeping with his steady, no-nonsense professionalism as a former soldier now militia. Melusine is anxious to prove her English heritage, despite her heavy French accent and mangled English, wishing to marry an Englisman to cement her citizenship, while Gerald is called to uncover the identity of a suspected French spy inhabiting an abandoned estate. Gerald is intent on never marrying, but fails to recognize just how enamored he is becoming of this beautiful and intriguing interloper. Some familiarity with common French phrases would be helpful, but not necessary to the enjoyment of the story. There are interesting plot twists that develop as the story progresses. My rating would be closer to 4 1/2 stars as I seldom give 5, but I can truthfully say that I didn't suffer a single dull spot throughout! It won't change your life, but you won't have any regrets either.

Lately I have been reading historical romances in much the same way one might indulge in French fries. They are cheap, easy to get, and satisfy a basic craving. Of course, they are probably not good for me, and it seems that almost all of them are much to spicy/hot for my taste. But then, sometimes, instead of fries in a red paper box from a place with golden arches, you find yourself in a French bistro eating pommes frites fried in duck fat -- the real thing.
Ms. Bailey presents a tight, complex plot, interesting characters, comfortable use of the time period and languages -- all things that are all too rare in most books. Heck, half the books I have read lately have not even been properly edited or proofread. What a pleasure to read a book where these things can be taken for granted as they ought to be!
Mademoiselle at Arms is a romp in the style of Georgette Heyer: sweet, funny, and with romance deftly woven into a plot that stands on its own. It reminds me a bit of Talisman Ring.
    Very highly recommended.

I stumbled across this novel whilst looking for something to read through Christmas. I always take a look at historical novels, hoping to find something new and especially smutt free. After having spent my teenage years immersed in Georgette Heyer books, it is rare to come across authors with a well developed sense of timing and atmosphere that goes with this kind of genre.

I read it over two days and thoroughly enjoyed it. At no time did I stop and compare her with GH, so engrossing was the story.

Other reviewers have mentioned problems with the dialogue. I personally did not find any problems with this aspect of the book. The heroine reminded me strongly of Leonie in Georgette Heyer's 'These Old Shades.'

If you like clean reads, fiery heroines and witty heroes, you will like this book. It is well written and flows well with a story-line that was unique.

This story has so much in the way of pure, cheeky mirth and seriousness in it with the funniest deliveries being made by our heroine, a French/English Mademoiselle (by the name of Melusine) who is also a weapon carrier of note.
She is assisted by Gerald a young man who is serious in his endeavors to find out who Melusine really is and what the mystery surrounding her is all about.
Believe me when I say that I was thoroughly entertained by these two characters as they went about their ways to solve the mysteries and then they fell in love!
This is a really engaging story and I simply fell in love with both of these main characters.

The idea of the book is appealing, and the book itself wasn't horrible. It just seemed too long (I skipped chunks and still understood the storyline perfectly) and the heroine seemed too fake/disingenuous. Well, actually, I found her annoying. By the end of the book I stopped liking the hero as much too just because he liked her. Maybe I would other books from this author, but I'm in no rush to test that theory.

This beautifully written, sweet HEA is reminiscent of the romances written by the revered Georgette Heyer, and fans of her will thoroughly enjoy the book. Banter between the characters is appealing and the plot was thrilling.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Regency Romances I have read...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 6, 2017
I really can't think why I have never commented on this book before. I downloaded it from here a year or two ago, and have now just recently reread it. It was as good to read again as it was the first time.

In fact, I distinctly remember looking for more books by this author, but found none that of hers that were anywhere near as good, or as scintillating as Mademoiselle At Arms. Perhaps that was the reason that I forgot to review this one.

In any event, it was extremely well written, it was exciting, interesting, highly amusing in many parts, and really a page turner; I simply could not put this book down until I had read it from cover to cover. I don't agree that the heroine was silly or exasperating; she was French, and believe me, I have a great affinity and knowledge of and with the French, and have met many just such as the heroine here. Obviously not with the angst and hardships that the heroine of this regency time had to contend with, but those with her spirit and determination.

I truly loved the hero, and his military sidekick, lol. Both were extremely amusing in their own ways, just as the heroine was. I just wish that I could have found other books from this author with the same charismatic enchantment as Mademoiselle At Arms.

You will not regret reading this delightful story; wish I could have given it more stars...

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely writing

Excellent storytelling. Fun adventure. Character repartee is hilarious.
At times the narrative is a bit lengthy, but
the book is hard to put down until you are three quarters through. Then the plot seems to be solved and the narrative becomes unhelpful in adding anything to the tension.
Until the ending. That was fun, again. A truly delightful read. I’ll be off now to her next novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars enormous fun reading
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 14, 2012
This book was such a refreshing change from a lot of dull reading it was my misfortune to pick recently. The moment I started the book my spirits lifted. Liz Bailey's book is full of laughter and light heartedness. But the plot grips you and the story leads you along rapidly, wondering what is next. It is intriguing and you can really enjoy getting to know the characters. I look forward to seeing what Lady Fan will get herself embroiled in next!
