Making Up: A Shacking Up Novel Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 2,257 ratings

A new standalone, laugh-out-loud romantic comedy by New York Times bestselling author Helena Hunting.

Cosy Felton is great at her job—she knows just how to handle the awkwardness that comes with working at an adult toy store. So when the hottest guy she’s ever seen walks into the shop looking completely overwhelmed, she’s more than happy to turn on the charm and help him purchase all of the items on his list.

Griffin Mills is using his business trip in Las Vegas as a chance to escape the broken pieces of his life in New York City. The last thing he wants is to be put in charge of buying gag gifts for his friend’s bachelor party. Despite being totally out of his element, and mortified by the whole experience, Griffin is pleasantly surprised when he finds himself attracted to the sales girl that helped him.

As skeptical as Cosy may be of Griffin’s motivations, there’s something about him that intrigues her. But sometimes what happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas and when real life gets in the way, all bets are off. Filled with hilariously awkward situations and enough sexual chemistry to power Sin City, Making Up is the next standalone in the Shacking Up world.

Not my first read by author and by god the cover on this alone makes you swoon and think of everything and anything, then the blurb hits you & I knew I had to read it!I will forewarn you right now my BOOKBESTIE Ames had to talk me off the ledge with this one, thank god she had already read it because at about 40% there is a HUGE TRIGGER of mine and I about cried in frustration. Also I can’t tell you what it is but enough for me to freak out and have my bestie part spoiler alert me. Okay now that we are past this…The story line and all WAS FANTASTIC, i freaking loved that part as well as how they met. I mean I would totally be Cosy if I were in her shoes. The first date was everything and everything okay let’s just clear it up GRIFFIN was EVERYTHING! *SWOON ALERT* serious swoon alert!!The fun part is that once i got part spoiler alert and continued, I was skeptical and scared to what will come hehe Helena is really sneaky with that trigger, i never saw that coming! But things aren’t always as they seem…or so they say! I think I was on the fence about Cosy, I had most moment that I liked her but her being 22 and them having a age gap ALSOOOOO i want to address that I totally felt OLD from a comment of Cosy’s sister…gah, 33 is not old *crying* hahaha it was still a lot of fun to read it! So yeah, age gap new romance are a thing of mine, aside from that little beginning trigger, that also scared me in a good way.Cosy is a 22 year old still in collage where Griffin is 33 and already conquering his own empire. Cozy brings a lot of excitement and fun to Griffin’s world but it’s more than that, a lot happens but Griffin stands strong and powers through for the both of them..interesting turn of events that’s all I will say!A lot of secrets, a lot of adventure a LOT OF SWOON…another fun and sexy read by Helena!!Rating: ★★★★★Steamy: 🔥🔥🔥🔥 🔥Recommended: ☑ HIGHLY!⇨ H A P P Y – R E A D I N G ⇦

Book 4 in the Shacking Up series, this has been a favorite series from the start (though I somehow missed book 3 *runs off to 1-click). While there are some mentions of earlier characters and events, and some slight crossover, you don’t need to have read the previous books in the series to enjoy this.

An opposites attract kind of story, Cosy is a poor college student working at an adult toy shop to pay the bills—and yes, the setup is pretty funny, but there’s far more to the story than that. With a little bit of wanderlust, Cosy has taken time off from college occasionally to travel wherever the winds take her, and though she may be young, she’s more of a grown-up when it counts than a lot of people I know. At more than a decade older, Griffin comes from money, and is a Harvard grad. He’s settled into his job working in his family’s business, and rarely does anything without a plan, though thanks to an ex, he has his moments of vulnerability when it comes to women. He’s only in Vegas for a few months working on a project, she’s only there finishing up her degree and than who knows where she may be. Figuring out how these two are going to be together added tension to the story and helped keep me turning those pages.

I liked that Griffin is in his thirties and that they take their time getting together. Be warned, when they do get together, it’s all kinds of hot, whew! I also really liked that when there were bumps in the relationship (and some of them were pretty surprising), Cosy reacted but then took her time to think things through. Her reactions to the events themselves made sense to me, and it also made sense that she’d be careful and cautious after getting hurt, even when what happened wasn’t intentional or Griffin’s fault.

While the story has many funny moments, it never passed that invisible line of too over the top for me, and the author did a nice job balancing out the humor with a little angst and plenty of heat. While most of the story revolves around Cosy and Griffin, there are a few secondary characters around, including Cosy’s sister, Nevah. I wasn’t quite sure about Nev at first—she’s not a character I have much in common with—but her heart is in the right place, and by the end, I was intrigued enough to hope she eventually gets her own hea.

Very, very funny and very, very hot, with a little heartbreak to keep the balance, this was a fast, engaging read for me, and a great addition to the series. 5 stars

Helena Hunting has done it again! Making Up is another sweet, sexy, HILARIOUS age-gap love story.
(Seriously. I listened to the first half while mowing the lawn and at one point Cosy had me laughing so hard I was crying. Had to put the John Deere in park until I calmed down.) Her prose is flawless, her characters are lovable, and the dialogue is witty and smart. If light-hearted, steamy rom-coms are your jam, then Helena Hunting is your girl, and Making Up is a book for you.

    Cosy and Griffin are adorable.
They are adorable as individuals and they are adorable together. Cosy is quirky. Griffin is sexy. The age-gap keeps things spicy, and their personalities mesh really well. They’re a couple made in rom-com heaven. (And I personally am hoping for a book with Nev, Cosy’s sister, in the future, because I want to know her story.)

The conflicts in Cosy and Griffin’s relationship are just dramatic enough to warrant the title, but they don’t darken the light hearted nature of the book. While I never got the gut-punch of emotions I usually crave with my novel, Making up still squeezed my heart in all the right places. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It’s a solid 4 stars for me.

“Why not 5 stars,” you ask? Well lemme tell ya.

I liked this book. I really liked it. But there were a few minor things that kept me from loving it. It didn’t gut me, but I wasn’t expecting that from Helena Hunting, so that’s not what kept this from being a 5 star read. Light-hearted rom-coms aren’t supposed to stomp on my heart, and I get that. It still touched on all my emotions the way good writing should. No, what kept me from loving the book had to do with character depth and backstory.

Cosy and Griffin were very lovable, but they didn’t always feel real. To me, it felt like the characterization was lacking. There were instances where continuity was lacking between the direct and the indirect characterization for both Cosy and Griffin. They were lovable characters, but I didn’t feel like I knew them, and that dampened the appeal for me.

And, perhaps as a result of the lacking depth, I couldn’t shake the manic pixie dream girl cliche when it came to Cosy. Once you make that connection it can’t be unmade. Cosy was great. I really did love her. She cracked me up and entertained me to no end, but she definitely has a bit of the MPDG element, and I couldn’t move past that.

So! Wrapping it up, I liked Helena Hunting’s Making Up. It was a perfect light-hearted and fun romantic comedy. I laughed A LOT, I blushed numerous times, and I even cried a little. It’s extremely well-written, the characters were lovable, and the plot was engaging. With the exception of my issues with character depth, I really enjoyed this book.
It’s a solid 4 star read for me, and I definitely recommend reading it.

Cosy up and get comfy because when you start this book you are not going to want to put it down!

Cosy and Griffin meet at the adult toy store where Cosy works when Griffin wins the embarrassing task of getting supplies for a friend's bachelor party. A few weeks later Griffin returns to see if the beautiful girl from Sex Toy Warehouse would like to go out with him. He is not in town for long and is not looking for anything serious thanks to his last relationship but this suits Cosy as she is quite the free spirit and is always ready for her next adventure! She agrees to go out with him but when they realise that there is a 10 year age gap between them will it put a stop to their relationship before it even begins? Will they care what people think or will they realise how strong their chemistry is and how well suited they are? ......Just when things seem to settle another obstacle is thrown in their course and Cosy and Griffin must do what's right for everyone at the cost of their own happiness! When the truth is revealed will Cosy be gone for good or will Griffin be a pro at making up???

This may be my favourite of the Shacking Up series, it's romantic and funny with just the right amount of drama and is guaranteed to be an enjoyable read! I love Helena Hunting's work and am looking forward to Lincoln's story!
