- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2015Well, this installment in the Dowser series was very much a quest book. Or rather a Dungeons & Dragons adventure- yes, I went there. However this did not lessen my enjoyment of the story. The story itself relies heavily on the Instruments of Assassination like the previous book did. So we are again treated to exotic locals and scary/exciting magic. This takes up much of the book, which is fine, but what I relished most was the moments where the interpersonal relationships were at the forefront. I really love Jade and I like seeing her work through her relationship with Warner. They are at times playful and at times hot. I love seeing and hearing more about Kett; both his history and the changes he has undergone since London. However these moments are small compared to the amount of action in the story. I'd really like to see more of the Guardians since Jade, (and therefore the readers) are in the dark regarding the Guardians thoughts and beliefs. I think that this story is transitional in many ways. We are introduced to a new crazy villainess. We are told about the changes in attitude and position of the characters around Jade. We don't get to see much of it, which is frustrating, but I still must give this book 5 stars. Because, for a middle book suffering a bit from middle-book-syndrome, it is still very, very good. Well written, and the story is well-paced if a bit on the short side. I did miss Kandy and Drake, who only play small roles this time around. However the repartee between Warner and Kett was quite amusing. And I really like the way new trio of side characters (from San Francisco) were written. They were an interesting counterpoint to the Dower and Oracle and their compatriots. And we get gently reminded that Jade, for all her crazy powers, has really only been exposed to the tiniest bit of magic so far. I look forward to continuing the series, to see the width and breadth of magic in Jade's world and in herself. I feel that Doidge has a lot left to offer us, her readers, and I feel that Jade's journey is still entirely compelling.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2015This was yet another hit for Meghan! The continuity of this series is seamless and the only drawback that I see is that you really need to read them in order. Each book is a self contained story, but to really understand all the nuances of the story you really need the back story of events too. Other than that, I loved this book and Jade as the reluctant heroine. She seems a lot like most of us. Just dealing with life, albeit a very magical one, one step, one moment, one trial at a time. The romance with the Sentinel is just like real life. With the push-pull of attraction and the uncertainty that happens in real life. As for her relationship with the Vampire, Kitt, it's warm and complicated and convoluted in the extreme. Jade is a strong woman who deals with her "task" of retrieving the instruments of destruction as well as she can, in a world where she is both the least powerful and the most dangerous (at times) person in the group. Love, love, love this series!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2015Excellent continuance of this great story. Sadly, it didn't last long enough to satisfy me. Looking forward to the next romp with Jade and Co. Notable in this novel is more romance, travel, positive plot evolution and maturation of our protagonist. Hoping for a longer book next time but glad this author is prolific. She has a natural flow with words that enables this story to present itself like a motion picture, natural and unpretentious.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2023Doidge’ s series is a fun, relaxing, and compelling read. The Oracle series fits in nicely at certain intervals. Jade and gang are managing to retrieve the gratin slayer relics with an interesting twist. Can’t wait to see where this goes.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2015LOVED this series!! I want No. 6 NOW!!! This is a great series. Kept my attention and had me reading into the wee hours every night! Some of the plot twists are very evident to the reader and not evident to the heroine, Jade. However, all through the series, Jade does admit that at times she is not the sharpest human or the fastest on figuring out clues. But that is a very small criticism and easily overlooked. Just for the shoe references and chocolate references alone, this series is worth the read! Warning: do not read while hungry or craving anything sweet!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2024How am I just finding this series?!?! The world, the characters, and the bonds between are so richly described and expressed; I want to know them and spend time with them! (And visit the bakery, of course!)
- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 20194 Stars... This one was an improvement over the previous book, however, I still struggled with some aspects of the story... Let me start by saying that I am most invested in this series when the story is focused on the supernatural element... I find that aspect to be engaging, complex, and intriguing… As that part of the story unfolds, I find myself captivated and eagerly turning the page to see what direction the story will take... Unfortunately, the pieces that are lacking for me are the romantic aspect and the personality of the MC, Jade... I am baffled as to the direction of the romance; it seems forced and unbelievable given the occurrences in the first three reads... The connection with the sentinel lacks any and all chemistry and has seemingly come out of nowhere; she meets him in book 4 and all of a sudden is madly in love, WHAT???... It just does not add up for me when you have potential with both Kett or Desmond... Perhaps things will shift and become clear, but for right now that is a low point for me in the series... Also, the author needs to stop dumbing down her heroine... You cannot say that she is the most powerful supernatural being and then make her more concerned about her clothing and hair than she is about the threat looming in front of them... This naivety worked in the first book due to her being sheltered from her abilities, but now it just makes her appear incapable and shallow... Give her some depth and grit; allow her to demonstrate her strength, intelligence, and ability as a powerful supernatural... We get tiny glimpses of it, but then some one liner comes in and wipes it all out... She has great potential, let her soar!:)

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best ever
ABSOLUTELY Spectacular. This one Jade spends most of the book with the vampire and her boyfriend the sentinel. They're two of my favorite characters, especially Kett. I especially liked reading all the nuanced ways Jade reads Kett's behavior. They're relationship is festinating and so well written.
Jade is after the second instrument of assassination and she's about to find out more about the dragons and her father than she may want to know. We finally see Jade more clearly in relation to the dragons and her father specifically. If you're a fan you'll LOVE this. This was a pivotal book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jade does it again!
Fantastic 5th book, I heart Jade, Kett and Kandy, they all kick ass really well! I don't want too give much away, except you've surpassed yourself again with another funny and original story, thank goodness for the Sentinel as there's always time for that in anyone's life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another intriguing tale
What more flattering can be said than I was disappointed when the story ended. A very likeable, enjoyable, readable series.
