The Marquess's Masquerade: A Light-Hearted Regency Romance (Dastardly Lords Book 2) Kindle Edition

3.8 out of 5 stars 47 ratings

'The Marquess's Masquerade' is a traditional Regency romance in the style of Georgette Heyer.

Then, he did a terrible thing and smiled at her. That was the moment she knew she was in the biggest trouble of her life…

Miss Constance Lindon is the quiet younger sister of the fashionable Countess of Winbourne. Like any young lady, she can’t wait for her first Season, but not for the usual reasons. At long last, her work is going to be displayed at the Royal Academy Art Exhibition, and for Con, it's the most important thing in the world. She may even make a name for herself as a serious portraitist, if only people would stop talking about the rakish painter Lord Athelcroft long enough to notice her!

The Marquess of Athelcroft has problems of his own - he has to find a quick way to side-step his mother's ceaseless matchmaking before it is too late. Athelcroft has no intention of exchanging the freedom of an accomplished bonvivant for a wife. When Con unexpectedly loses her place at the exhibition and the dowager marchioness threatens her son with a visit, there’s only one thing left to do: strike a deal to fool everyone with a sham engagement. There’s only one rule – no falling in love.

As they embark on a ridiculous plan to make an exhibition of themselves in front of fashionable London, Con and Athelcroft soon discover that love has a way of sneaking up on you when you're not paying attention.

Will matchmaking mamas and well-meaning friends get in the way of a match most scandalous and a love most true?

Daphne has always had a passion for literature and history and one day it occurred to her: what better way to use her English Literature degree than to write the kinds of stories she loves to read? She hasn’t looked back since.

Daphne also writes lyrical fantasy under the pen name Emily de Courcy, and who knows where she'll branch out next!

Daphne has stacks of notebooks full of stories that still need to be written, which she insists on bringing with her when she moves around the world (she’s done this a lot!). She likes her books full of romance, magic, adventure, witty repartee and a dash of silly humour. When Daphne isn’t writing, she can be found painting, picnicking, reading and listening to all sorts of exciting music.

Now have read all three books in the series Dastardly Lords and am craving more. They are so well written, entertaining and so easily to get lost in. Highly recommend them as a respite for the current times.

My husband was in the hospital recovering from major surgery. I needed a book that would hold my attention and cheer me up. This was one of three books break Daphne du Bois that read during my five days at the hospital. I liked the strong female characters in her books that didn't swoon over the lead male characters while leading the men on a merry chase. I also liked the introduction of the lead characters of the next storey that kept me intrigued enough to download additional books.

How wonderful to be able to read the second book of this series and reunite with the wonderful characters of book one. I loved the main character for her complexity, personality, and originality. This author is the very best in modern Regency writing! I found myself smiling throughout this book lead by the intelligence of the author's well-written banter between the main characters. I totally recommend it!

The heroine and hero’s interaction with each other is spunky and fun. Then we get to close to the end, and Constance does a 180. Even her explanation for it is lame. Also there is some misspelling that is too much in a few pages. It receives four stars because of their interaction for the majority of the book, though it should probably be 3 1/2 stars overall.

I haven't read many romance novels and I've never read a traditional Regency romance. (According to Wiki, Regency romances "are a subgenre of romance novels set during the period of the British Regency (1811-1820) or early 19th century. Rather than simply being versions of contemporary romance stories transported to a historical setting, Regency romances are a distinct genre with their own plot and stylistic conventions").

I really enjoyed The Marquess's Masquerade. I instantly fell in love with the fiery Constance, whose nickname is "Con." She's a passionate, talented painter who has no interest in what other ladies are into including fancy dresses and marriage proposals. I also fell in love with The Marquess of Athelcroft because beneath his womanizing ways, he's an absolute sweetheart. Throughout the novel, I was rooting for their relationship to flourish...which it definitely did. I highly recommend!

This is a heart-warming and touching story. Con and Athelcroft really pull you into their game of love. Their relationship is so full of wonderful dialogue that their characters come to life so vividly. I really enjoyed taking the journey with these two, to see where their relationship would go and how it would unfold. There are even some unexpected twists in the plot that intensify the story more. Very romantic and beautiful!

I found this book utterly delightful. I'm pretty picky but this one captured me from the start. I have read all her books and await her next !

5.0 out of 5 stars If you've never tried or liked a Regency romance, pick up a du Bois!

There's not massive amount for me to add after the previous books I've read of du Bois'. I always enjoy them, they always hit the mark, and are rounded off neatly to satisfaction. The right amount of humour and fun is balanced with off-limits sexy and quiet tenderness.

This one followed the story of Constance, Lorelei's (from Tee Scoundrel's Secret Siren (DL #1) younger sister, who is about to have her paintings shows at the RA.

Talented, confident and unwilling to compromise her future, Con was a wonderful heroine who never lost her draw, and the dastardly lord of the piece, Athelcroft the rake, unwound into a severely likeable hero. After he is given her space at the RA for his work instead, Con dares to insist that he return it. He agrees...with conditions. They must falsify a romance and engagement to fend off his pushy mother's insistence of a wife. Fun and frolics follow, and normally straight as an arrow Con is turned secretive and sneaky, while Athelcroft's non-committal attitude is turned inside out.

I don't read a massive amount of modern (or otherwise) Regency romance, so I rarely have a basis for comparison. But who cares, these are completely to my taste already. If you've never tried, or maybe never liked, a book in this genre pick up one of Du Bois'.

Would be 5 stars but it needs a good edit as it is full of irritating typos and silly plot errors
