The Marriage Effect: A marriage of convenience sports romance (Washington Wolves Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 10,488 ratings

Logan Ward drives me just a little crazy. It’s the only reason I can explain how I ended up fake-married to him. He’s got those dark eyes and broody stares, totally unflappable, which is a good trait in a star defensive football player. Maybe it’s because I don’t always think things through, or because he does drive me crazy, but when I find out he needs a wife to keep custody of his four younger sisters, I have no problem volunteering for the job.

I have my own reasons for needing a husband, and striking a mutually beneficial bargain with Logan is the perfect solution. Plus, it can’t be that hard to wrangle four young girls and a big grumpy football playing husband, right?
Wrong.

Our simple solution creates a whole new problem. Logan and I aren’t as different as we thought. My reluctant groom has fire inside him, and I can’t wait to light the match.

1000 Stars for Karla Sorensen newest book The Marriage Effect. Karla has written one masterpiece y’all are going to flip for!! A MUST READ book for any Sports Romance reader! Gahhhh...this book is packed FULL of emotions. You get the whole package with this book. You’ll laugh, you’ll swoon, you’ll cry and your heart will burst from all the love written in this story. Paige and Logan are EVERYTHING!! What started out as “fake” ends up becoming so much more. Paige needed Logan and Logan needed Paige. These two had the perfect plan but both never knew it would grow to something that neither of them wanted out of. People ended up depending on them each and once the whole family was a well oiled machine nothing could tear them a part. Nothing but maybe themselves. Highly recommended. One of my favorite books of 2019.

Earlier this year a friend of mine recommended this book to me, and me being me, I had to read the series in order. Was it necessary? No, as all of these books were standalones, but I'm glad I did. I love sports romance and I love football, so this was totally my jam. PLUS, this series took place in Washington and I live her so, even closer to my heart.

In The Ex Effect, book 2 of the series, we were introduced to Logan Ward, but didn't know much about him except that he hated the press/media and gave their publicist a hard time granting interviews and such. I love a quiet, grumpy character and was instantly drawn to him and wanted to know more. Thank goodness Karla gave him his own story. We also had been introduced to Paige McKinney (the heroine) briefly in the previous books as best friend to the owner of the Washington Wolves and ex-model. She seemed like she was obviously gorgeous, but maybe a bit flighty and made decisions without thinking too much about the outcome. I knew she was going to be a character that had to get her story too. Who would make the world traveling model settle down??

This story of fake marriage, single guardian, grumpy/sunshine, and sports romance had everything I love in a good romance. Great main characters. Amazing supporting characters. Sexual tension and a storyline that drew you in right from the beginning. I loved that both Paige and Logan needed each other for different reasons, but they needed one another regardless. And a fake marriage was the answer. I loved that Paige was a strong and fierce woman that was definitely someone you would want your kids to look up to. She is unapologetically herself, but she fights for those she loves and cares for with everything that she is. She won me over right from the start when she had an interaction with a young football player. Fierce! And Logan? Well, while he is the quiet hero, it's his love of his sisters that totally did me in. While he is not their dad, he is raising them and wants no fanfare or accolades. If you know me, I love single dads in stories and while he isn't a dad, he is a guardian and the way he loves those sisters and wants what's best for them? That's the sexiest thing a man can do. And those Ward sisters? They were major scene stealers and gave this story the perfect balance.

With all that said, I hate picking favorites, but The Marriage Effect was definitely my favorite of the series. The cast of characters and their story was just perfection. Yes, Paige and Logan and their slow burn, fake marriage filled with sexual tension to the nth degree had me all charged up and biting at the bit, but the relationship that really got to me emotionally was the one Paige had with the Ward sisters. It was the perfect balance to the tension filled romance. There is one scene that had me so emotional that I may have even shed a tear. Those girls won me over.

The Marriage Effect was a great ending to the Washington Wolves series. I swear each book was better than the last. Ms Sorensen built an amazing football world that I wanted to be a part of. I love football and a good emotional, angsty, and frustratingly hot read. I frickin loved Logan and Paige together and only wished we got more of them. BUT, it appears that we may see those 2 in future books since we got a little taste of a new series to come featuring the Ward sisters series at the end. I can't wait to check those out too. In the meantime, totally recommend this book whether you read it in order or not. It's one to put on your TBR!

'Here Allie thought that Logan was going to make a play for that feeble organ inside my chest, but she never expected that a fourteen-year-old girl would steal it first.'

He needs to be married to retain guardianship of his 4 sisters. She needs to be married to access her inheritance. Logan is an NFL player who's caring for his half-sisters. Paige is a retired model who's trying to figure out her next steps. They're opposites - he's a stoic planner and she's impulsive and outspoken. When they connect through a series of coincidences, there's a lot of attraction but neither expects anything permanent. As Paige becomes part of Logan's and his family's lives, love begins to develop. It's moving to watch Paige rise to the challenges of a pair of pranking tweens, a couple of teens, and a grouchy big man who's determined to protect his heart. As this family gets to know and respect each other, they find trust and loyalty and love.

This is a very slow burn. The main characters don't come together until about three quarters into the book.

    I am gobsmacked.
    Full stop.

I don’t know if it’s because I’ve read all 3 books in this series back to back to back, but I seriously can NOT get over how good this book was. Every time I finished one book, I’d think to myself, ‘even if the next book is simply just as good as this one.. it’ll be more than worth the read’. But each book gets better and better.
The way this author writes…. 🤯🤯🤯
Any of it by itself wouldn’t be as impactful… like if I tried to find the best quotes out of the 98363628483 quotes I highlighted to put in this review for the purpose of enticing you to read the book.. they probably wouldn’t look that impressive.
BUT they definitely FEEL impressive. When strung together in a full length novel.. it’s like every word was explosive💥💥💥
Every single interaction between Paige and Logan, Logan and Isabel, Isabel and Paige, Paige and Molly, the twins and literally anyone!!… each word was so powerful and packed with so much emotion (love, humor, heat, anger, pain, etc.) that I had to stop myself from highlighting the whole book!!

I bought it, the book I mean, if that wasn’t obvious already Lol

I have been itching to read Paige’s story since her verbal assaults in book 1! 😂

“That kid wouldn’t know what to do with me if I gave him a laminated sheet with bullet point instructions and a highlighted map of my body.”
    👆🏼👆🏼
And that’s tame compared to how hilarious she can be.
Between her and the twins.. I was almost in tears 😂😂😂
~Paige is a beautiful, intimidating, and intelligent ex-model who has always submitted to the wanderlust she finds herself feeling when stuck in one place for too long. That is until she moves to Washington after her best friend inherits an NFL team. She hasn’t felt the need to find some place new, she just feels the need for some sort of direction and purpose.
    *she asked for it 🤷🏻‍♀️*

And Logan..Sweet sweet Logan Ward. *dreamy sigh*
We know from the first two books that he’s a devoted big brother to 16 year old Molly, 14 year old Isabel, and 12 year old twins Lia and Claire. Because their well being is his sole focus.. he was never the average dumb jock football player and is always characterized as extremely serious. But the seriousness stems from feeling the weight of his actions counting for more than just himself.

“Before I made any decision, I’d already played out a dozen outcomes in my head..”
“She didn’t think about the consequences of her actions, whereas I analyzed mine to death. I thought and thought and thought about how I said things to my sisters. Played through scenarios in my head and tried to figure out how I’d handle them. What was too firm, what was too lenient. How could I balance loving them with gaining their respect?”

The story that unfolds is loaded with every single thing I could have wanted out of an extremely satisfying romance.
It’s filled with the best kind of love, both familial and friendship, the importance of learning to grow and adapt as a person, realizing what you think you want and what you actually want are usually two different things, denial, jealousy, the good kind and the bad kind, and how to be more open and honest with yourself in order to let people in.

There’s honestly nothing I can say that could measure up to even half of how good this story was.. so please.. just read it!!

Now to read the spin off series 😍😍

Karla Sorenson always creates fun, loving stories. I loved Paige and Logan together, especially with the dynamic that they find themselves in. Logan intrigued me from seeing him in book 2, I always wanted him to find his HEA and when you get to know his situation it makes him so much more swoon-worthy.

Logan doesn't stand a chance when it comes to Paige's advances. She is not a woman to be messed with but Logan doesn't see himself falling for the woman he cannot see a relationship with. How wrong he was. So wrong. I absolutely adored when Paige fought for what was hers and stood up for the girls. She said she would do it but actions always speak louder than words and at that moment you could tell how much it meant to the girls.

I'm sad the series has come to an end but I will definitely be reading other books by Karla.

I have the softest spot for the Ward sisters!! Granted I’ve only read 2/4 from that series but it was enough to make me fall in love with their family dynamic that I’m surprised it’s taken me this long to read about about their oldest brother—Logan Ward.

For context, Logan needed a leg up to be able to keep legal guardianship of his sisters and so he agreed to a marriage of convenience with Paige—the best friend of the owner of the team Logan plays at. Paige was all too happy with the agreement considering her own aunt left her an inheritance with the stipulation that she has to be married in order to obtain it.

I can’t even explain it but do you ever just meet characters that feel like they’ve been married for years? This was exactly how I felt about Logan and Paige. They just fit together so well!! I loved their characters equally. Paige is this badass woman who never thought, after flitting around for most of her life, would see herself settled down with a family. Logan was yummy 😩😂 There’s nothing more attractive than a man who is quiet in his confidence and puts the good of his family before anything else. I completely understand why Paige folded so quickly 😂 It was also so entertaining to watch the fmc doing the chasing. And I don’t mean that in a creepy, annoying way. Logan was just trying to protect himself and his sisters. He didn’t want to stay attached, for good reasons. But I lived to see Paige test Logan’s limits 😂 I was literally squealing every 5 seconds of this book. I loved them so much!!

The sisters were adorable and I loved how realistic Paige settled into their family. She didn’t try to become their mother. I wouldn’t say she handled the kids with grace, esp with the twins 😂 But she made it work in her own way. Everything also make sense now lol. I don’t tend to read interconnected series in order so it’s nice to see the sisters’ origins and how they came to be when I got to reading their books.

It’s probably not fair of me to say Karla Sorensen is my favorite sports romance author since I haven’t ventured far. But Karla Sorensen is my favorite sports romance author. I haven’t read one book that I disliked yet. It’s always a fun time, every time!!

This is the second book of the Washington Wolves series, the books are standalones.
I haven't read the first part yet, but it doesn't feel like I missed something important to enjoy this story.
I liked the story line, the writing style, the tension and the interesting characters. At some points their thoughts and actions strayed a bit from reality, but that didn't influence my reading experience too much.
This book is a great combination of classical romance tropes, fake marriage, sports, patchwork, and it works.
