About the Author
Reviewers have described her work as early Gillian Flynn with a little Ray Bradbury and Stephen King thrown in for good measure.
She won Harlequin's search for "the next Gillian Flynn" in 2016. Her first published novella, The Bear Who Wouldn't Leave, was featured in Samhain's Childhood Fears collection and stayed on its horror bestsellers list for over a year.
When not writing, she loves exploring the world's most haunted places, advocating for animal rights, and summoning her inner ninja in muay thai class.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2020MASK OF GHOSTS is the fifth book in the GhostWriters series by author J.H. Moncrieff. While these novels have the two main characters in common, they are designed to be able to be read as standalones. Kate and Jackson investigate paranormal problems--Kate having been born with the ability to see and communicate with spirits, and Jackson coming into the role of "protector".
This novel begins in Bali, where Roxi--Jackson's sister--buys a mask as a gift for her brother. To say the shop owner was reluctant to allow this purchase would be an understatement.
". . . One day you will be begging me to take it back."
The best thing I find when reading one of Moncrieff's novels, is the way she writes about each location the stories take place in. The imagery and details make me feel as if I were physically present in these exotic countries. Everything including the stores, the people, the history, and even the local food is told with such authenticity, that it's easy to feel a part of it all.
". . . When you see things . . . incredible things--there's only so long you can keep saying they don't exist."
In my opinion, this fifth installment of the GhostWriters is the "darkest" one to date. While still full of the playful sarcasm that I love between Kate and Jackson, the events definitely go into a much . . . stronger . . . direction then in the others.
". . . How do you talk to anger? To vengeance? And assuming you can talk to them, will they listen?"
Another aspect that I love about this author's books, is that a part of them is based upon actual events in a country's past. In this case, a section of Bali's history is revealed that I had never heard of before. The infusion of fact and fiction give more power to the words--making them ring as true as the reality that preceded the story.
". . . the dead want you to remember their names. What they want, above all else, is not to be forgotten . . . "
Overall, this book hit all the right spots for me. We had a horrific event in the past and great characters (including the dynamics between them), pit against a present evil.
". . . She was going to have to grow up fast, because there was no sugarcoating this one."
Encompassing a combination of historical fiction, paranormal events, and thriller elements, MASK OF GHOSTS is my new favorite in the GhostWriters series.
Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2021I thoroughly enjoyed this installment of the GhostWriters series even though it was probably the scariest and goriest one so far. This author doesn't heavily rely on gore to shock or pull in her readers, but for the story being told, I understand why there was so much of it. Still, none of it felt gratuitous.
With that out of the way, I want to say how happy I was to see the two main characters back, side by side, in full fighting force, even if they weren't always on the same page.
In more ways than one, this installment becomes a family affair. While we've seen some ghostly relative interaction in the past, this installment tackles family dynamics in many ways, exploring the relationship between siblings and in-laws, on top of unearthing generational secrets that help and or protect no one while building up shame and or regret.
I've said this before, and nothing has changed, but I can't stand a book that ends on a cliffhanger and that's what this book does. Oddly enough, I can stand it a bit, simply because the central conflict in this installment is addressed and then the cliffhanger serves as a teaser for what's to come in the next book. Luckily for me, I already have Carol of Ghosts cued up.
Highly recommended to fans of horror, complex paranormal situations, diverse characters, and smart dark fiction.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2020The thing with J.H. is that she writes in such a way that you can't read just one... you have to read them all! "Mask of Ghosts" is, in my opinion, one of the more darker stories in the series. When family becomes involved the burden we carry is so much heavier and this adventure involves Jackson's sister, Roxi. What is meant to be a bonding, joyful experience between the two ladies in his life turns into a desperate attempt to save his sister from the curse of the mask. Dealing with one of the darkest spirits in the GhostWriters series, every moment is a harrowing one and the rage that drives the spirit is motivated by a tragedy so great (and not all that far in the past) that her strength just might be too much for the team of Jacks and Kate. Without spoiling anything, let me just say... this book is worth it for the hair-raising ending alone!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2022Cryptic, very cryptic. So, Jacks is hosting a ghost now? I guess anything to save his sister. But what does this mean for him and Kate?
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2020I love the Ghostwriters series. Not only does the author take us to some fabulous locations, we also get a great, scary story each time. Mask of Ghosts is no exception and sees the main characters – Kate and Jackson – unwittingly needing to go to Bali. It all started when Jackson’s sister, the feisty Roxi, decided on the perfect gift for her brother. On holiday in Bali, she and her friends visited a shop selling all manner of curios – from the usual tourist gifts through to a far more sinister collection, housed upstairs and clearly marked as not being suitable for tourists. The owner refused to see it to her, but Roxi is not one t take ‘no’ for an answer. Once she managed to buy it, that is when the trouble started. The mask was cursed. Bad things began to happen. Kate – possessed of what she calls the Gift (but Jackson has come to regard as the Curse) – is terrified by the images it gives off.
They must return it to the shop, and that means a lengthy trip back to Bali. Not only that, the shop won’t take it back. As things turn out, it wouldn’t matter if they did. The mask is now firmly attached to one person.
This is a quick, page-turning, read. As always, the relationship between Kate and Jackson remains complicated, and all the more real for that. The setting is highly atmospheric. You can almost smell the spices in the food Wayan serves. All in all, a novel to be swept up in, told by a storyteller who knows how to engage all our senses. This is number five in the series. I eagerly await number six.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant supernatural thriller!
Once again this author has delivered an exciting, engaging, nail-biting thriller that left me guessing all the way through as to how it would wrap up; and once again, I was taken by absolute surprise. This book grips the reader from the very beginning, taking us on a journey through the supernatural forces in Bali. There is deeper meaning to the tale and as the story unfolds, so do the secrets that should never have been kept.
Kate and Jackson, our protagonists, are such relatable characters: flawed, brave, insecure, caring, egotistical, completely real in all aspects. I actually miss them while waiting for the next book! J. H. Moncrieff has undeniable skills in character development and in moving the story at a pace that makes you feel compelled to keep reading - my undereye bags are proof!
Although I have read all the books in the Ghostwriters series, I appreciate that one doesn't need to read them all, or even read them in order, to fully enjoy each individual story. Each book grows off of the previous one, but it is also its own entity, clearly woven so that you never feel like you are missing something. Having said that, I still strongly recommend you read the series from start to finish so you get to enjoy all of Kate and Jackson's adventures!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another thrilling, chilling ride into Ghost Land
Once again I got lost in a story so completely that I read the whole book in a day. This story saw our favorite ghost hunting duo in Bali. The story was rich, authentic, hard hitting and the ending...superb! Thank you for a most enjoyable read, J.H. Your i.agination and your gift for grabbing ahold of a reader on the very first page and not letting go is one that I both envy and cherish. I can't wait for your next story!
If you haven't read this yet...do it! Read the whole series! You won't regret it!!
