Master Your Next Move, with a New Introduction: The Essential Companion to "The First 90 Days" Hardcover – April 9, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
Your next professional move can make or break your career. Are you ready?
In business, especially today, you are only as successful as your next career transition. Do well, and you'll be on the fast track to even more challenging roles. Fail, and you could irreparably harm your career--and your organization.
In his international bestseller The First 90 Days, transition guru Michael D. Watkins outlined a set of basic principles for getting up to speed quickly in new professional roles. Since that book was published Watkins has worked with thousands of leaders, helping them to accelerate their transitions. These leaders posed challenging questions on how to apply the basic principles in real-life situations. The truth that emerged: the First 90 Days framework can be applied in every transition, but the way you apply it is entirely different when you have been promoted to a higher level than it is when you are joining a new organization or taking a role in a different country.
Master Your Next Move answers a distinct need, focusing on the most common types of transitions leaders face and the unique challenges posed by each. Based on years of research, and now with a new introduction, this indispensable book explores eight crucial transitions virtually everyone encounters during their career, including promotion, leading former peers, onboarding into a new company, making an international move, and turning around a business in crisis.
With real-world examples and many practical models and tools, Master Your Next Move is your guide to surviving and thriving as you make your next move . . . and every one after that.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2021I read the “First 90 Days” a while ago. In this upgraded version, Michael provides a focused approach depending on the unique challenges you’re undertaking. Highly RECOMMENDED!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2020Great follow up to a great book. More focused advice for particular situations.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2020As the author recommends it, to take profit of this book, you need to first read "The First 90 Days, Updated and Expanded: Proven Strategies for Getting Up to Speed Faster and Smarter ".
What I like about the book is the fact that it contains 7 types of career moves challenges you can either read from A to Z or you can just read the chapter most relevant to your next move. Whatever option you select, this book will teach you the step by step guidance to master your next move.
Here are the 7 types of challenges covered in the book.
1. The leading-former-peers challenge
2. The corporate diplomacy challenge
3. The onboarding challenge
4. The international move challenge
5. The turnaround challenge
6. The realignment challenge
7. The business portfolio challenge
I decided to start with #1, #2, and #3. Having worked Internationally from the start of my career, #4 wasn't really relevant to me. So, I brushed over it.
Overall, it's a good book to have and to consult anytime you move to a new role; whether in your current organization or in a new organization.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2019Many of those who did not read The First 90 Days probably did not remain in their position much longer than that. It offers an absolutely essential explanation of the most important dos and don'ts to keep in mind when attempting to get up to speed during the first three months in a new position. More specifically, they failed to respond effectively to eight sets of separate but probably interdependent challenges: accelerate their learning; match strategy to each situation and initiative; negotiate success; achieve alignment; build your team; secure early wins, create alliances, and manage yourself.
At some point, Michael Watkins realized that he needed to shift his attention to other challenges, the unique challenges posed by different types of transitions and how to apply essentially the same principles but within a different context. That is, Watkins examines the unique challenges of promotion, leading former peers, corporate diplomacy, onboarding, international move, turnaround, realignment, and business portfolio.
The two books are best viewed in combination: The First 90 Days provides a framework and tools as well as dos and dont's to keep in mind that can guide and inform a successful transition; Master Your Next Move suggests which challenges will probably be encountered and how to adjust the framework and tools to accommodate them. These are among the several dozen passages of greatest interest and value to me, also listed to suggest the scope of Watkins coverage:
o Relationship engineering (Pages 41-51)
o Corporate diplomacy (59-77)
o Alliances (68-69 and 72-73)
o Cultural adaptation (88-93)
o Alignment of expectations (97-104)
o Creating an onboarding system (100-105)
o Challenges of international move (107-127)
o Principles for international move (111-126)
o Business system analysis (133-147)
o Business model (140-144)
o Dynamic adaptations (145-147)
o Changing behaviors (161-163)
o Driving execution (176-183)
o Early success (177-182)
o Transition acceleration systems (189-197)
Credit Watkins with brilliant use of reader-friendly devices, notably an Introduction that really is well-worth reading and then re-reading as well as a "Checklist" section at the conclusion of Chapters 1-7 that will enable those who read the book to crystallize the key lessons and apply them to their and their organization's needs, interests, concerns, objectives, and resources. This book will be at least 3-5 times as valuable if read in combination with The First 90 Day...and vice versa.
How well an organization completes the transitions it encounters will depend almost entirely on how resilient its people are. As indicated earlier, Michael Watkins focuses on eight of the most frequent transitions and suggests how to respond effectively to the separate but probably interdependent challenges associated with each. In essence, he has identified the WHAT, HOW, and WHY. It remains for each reader to absorb and digest the material to master their next move...and each of the other moves that are certain to follow.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2023This book is clearly not as good as the "First 90 days" by the same author. In fact the best thing of this new book is the introduction 2 page summary of the older book, in the box titled the first 90 days framework with the 8 general areas to succeed when transitioning to a new role from accelarating learning to managing yourself, including matching strategy to the situation, aligning and securing early wins. That book was about general changes in role, this book according to the author is aimed at helping in specific 8 transitions such as being promoted and then having to lead former peers or moving abroad for international assignments. The author even recommends that you focus only on reading the specific situation that applies to you. However, when you dwelve into those you see that is either too general advice or too specific focus in one situation that has nothing or little to do with your specific situation. So a right balance of general versus specific wasnt achieved. That said since the specific transitions such as promotion are short chapter one can read them easily and still get some good, but now awe inspiring, such when being promoted to larger responsabilities you need to delegate technical parts and focus more on leadership, that is you should do more strategizing and get less involved in tactics. Then takes a turn into business unit leader promotion which is not a very common area and loses a lot of pages there (maybe that should be its own separate chapter about being promoted to head of business units). At the end of the chapter the promotion checklist advice is a bit vague and it stars with 1- promote yourself, 2- balance breadth and depth (ok good advice on holding two contradictarian views) and 3 think about competencies you need to develop in your new role (duh!). 4 is to ask what the organization can do for you (also odd advice given that they just promoted you so they expect you do something for the organization!). I've seen better books about dealing with transitions to increased responsibilities such as "The CEO test" (which applies to any promotion or transition involving higher responsibilities) from the former CEO of Amgen.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good read, but not as good as ‚the first 90 days‘
Not as good as the first book (which is one of the best onboarding bibles there is...)!
