Max Seventeen: Sci-fi action romance Kindle Edition
Action romance. In deep space.
Max is running. From jail, from hunger, and from the hard labour that awaits on the Zeta Secunda Mining Corps' stinking land trains.
Riley is running. From terrible shame in the past, from dark secrets in the present, and from the Service who have very definite ideas about officers who abscond to join pirate crews.
The starship Eurydice could mean their salvation. But the enigmatic Captain Orpheus could betray them both at any minute. When a terrible plot is uncovered and loyalties are tested, Max and Riley face losing everything.
Warning: this book contains bad language, bad behaviour, and a few bad people. Other than that, it's pretty good.
"Max Seventeen isn't just a gripping adventure, it's a kicks-your-feet out-from-under-you-jumps-on-your-head-and-steals-all-your-stuff thrillride." -Ruth Frances Long, author of the award-winning Dubh Linn Trilogy.
"This novel has great energy and passion and presents a real antidote to traditional romance novels, as well as being enormous fun. The author has created a vivid world, which was hugely ambitious and imaginative, and a romance with plenty of action, twists and turns." -Goldsboro Romantic Novel of the Year Award panel 2017

About the Author
She also seems to have developed a habit of talking about herself in the third person, which she'll stop now.
I was born in the 1980s and have spent the intervening years watching romantic comedies and reading Terry Pratchett, which sort of made it inevitable that I'd grow up to write fantastical stories about people falling in love.
I've worked in an airport and in a laboratory, but much prefer being an author since it allows me to look at pictures of handsome men all day for the purposes of research.
I spend a lot of time online (seriously, a lot of time), Tweeting, reading other people's blogs, and trying to justify the purchase of more shoes, and when I've completely run out of other things to do, I occasionally write books.
My hobbies include reading lots of books (researching the literary competition), watching films and TV (researching through a broad spectrum of media), drooling over (admiring the work of) fine actors such as David Tennant, Richard Armitage and Hugh Jackman, and being used as a bed/scratch-post/chew-toy/human slave by the aforementioned collection of animals.

About the author

I was born in the 1980s in Yorkshire and live in Essex, where I belong to a small pride of cats. I have a second cousin who made the Guinness Book of Records for brewing the world's strongest beer, and I once ran over myself with a Segway scooter. These two things are in no way related. I've worked in an airport, a lab, and various shops, but much prefer writing because me and mornings are definitely not the best of friends.
I sold my first book in 2005 and since then have published many award-winning paranormal and contemporary romances and light-hearted mysteries, including the popular Sophie Green series. My sci-fi action romance Max Seventeen won the Paranormal Romantic Novel of the Year from the Romantic Novelists Association in 2017. Under the pen name Cat Marsters I also had a successful career in erotic romance, winning an Epic award in 2010.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2018Fans of Firefly will love this book especially if they want a little bit more sexy action in their story. Riley was the perfect hero—flawed and hot with a myriad of secrets and layers. Plus, he knew when it was time to let a woman take control in bed and in the fight. Max was a kick-butt character who could out-alpha everyone in her world. She was deadly and vulnerable with a compelling backstory that made me angry for her. This book was hard to put down. The writing flowed and moved me quickly from one conflict to the next. I felt like I was watching a movie and I just buckled up and enjoyed the thrilling, sexy ride.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2016When Riley joins the crew of the pirate starship Eurydice after going AWOL from the service, he never dreamed that he'd become a hero or fall in love. But that's what happened.
Captain Orpheus plans to rob a land train, steal all the valuable cargo and cash, then hightail it to London, the space pirate's secret hideout.
Their plans go off somewhat as planned, but they didn't count on rescuing a scrawny slave boy in the process. That slave being Max Seventeen.
Along the way, they discover a interstellar plot to breed the Service's own race of superior military men and women. When the crew of the Eurydice discovers that a few of them are genetically related to this far reaching plan, it all becomes personal.
Max Seventeen is quite a book. It never slows down and always kept my interest. The characters are pretty complex and there are even a few surprises along the way. The editing is top notch without any spelling or grammatical errors to get in the way of the story. I enjoyed the descriptions of combat and also the crew's interactions. The futuristic fashion trends toward the end of the story are pretty far out.
Beware that there is bad language throughout the book, with several F-bombs thrown in. There are also a few sex scenes that children over 40 shouldn't be exposed to. Otherwise, this is quite the book. Probably due to the aforementioned language and sex.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2016I loved this book. It's sci-fi, action, romance - and mystery all rolled into one. The main characters, Max & Riley, are a great romantic duo - and the author even manages to put in a bit of a twist about them early in the book. Then you read on a bit and there's an 'oh' moment that's marvellous. The rest of the 'cast' are equally engaging - even some of the bad guys. There's comedy as well as tough (and sometimes very brutal) action so it isn't all totally hard nosed. Absolutely worth a read - and I'm hoping Ms Johnson is already working hard on the sequel.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2016Loved Impossible Things by the same author. This is a sort of Impossible Things meets Firefly. Lots of spaceship action scenes, great secondary cast, unusual but totally engaging main characters. The Joss Whedon vibe is definitely quite strong, with some Dark Angel storyline in there. A few story strands were not as fully explored as they could have been (Orpheus and Justine, Riley's sister), and as usual with this author the world building is amazing but not spoon fed - you have to work it out yourself! But overall a very satisfying book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2017When romance in space doesn't start with the kissing and sexing at once, but with good development of characters, then you know you're in for a treat.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2017This is a very enjoyable scifi book, somewhat along the lines of the Lois Bujold's Vorkosigan saga (Falling Free (Vorkosigan Saga Book 1)). It's fast paced, humorous, violent, emotional, and exciting. My only criticism is that it's a bit overlong, and the middle half of the book was rather slow moving. I, for one, felt bogged down by way too many sex scenes, and I wish the main characters had had relationships with someone other than just each other. But the last quarter of the book was very engaging and left me wanting to read more books from this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2019A very well crafted space, action, romance. Too many books on Amazon, especially self published, are bodice rippers and are literary trash. This book isn't one of them. Had me on the edge of my metaphorical seat, and I couldn't put it down. Unique characters, and a plot with many twists and turns. This book isn't afraid to touch some of the darker places in society, but is tactful in doing so. Never give book reviews, but I just had to give praise to this work of art. Admittedly there are couple grammar errors in this novel, but does not take away from my overall rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Has it all
Fantastic kickass heroine who isn’t afraid to leave it out there. Loved it. Male character developed nicely too. Kept guessing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pirates, whores and double-crossing, oh my!
Where to start?
I've been a fan of Kate's writing since The UnTied Kingdom: she writes *real* people, with character and flaws and actually interesting inner monologues. Her plots are bonkers and out me through the emotional wringer. I've been waiting for Max Seventeen since she was the sweaty, badly-behaved heroine of the tentatively titled 'Mad Space Book'.
She was worth the wait.
Max Seventeen (the book) is many things: witty, gross, violent, romantic, heart-breaking, thought-provoking, sexy and bloody good fun.
Max Seventeen (the person) is the perfect antithetical heroine: she can (will, does) rescue herself, thank you very much. She is utterly secure in who and what she is, and wastes no time feeling sorry for herself...well, when she does, she gives herself sh*t for it, so it doesn't count. She is fierce in every possible way and grows as a person throughout the book.
Riley is also fairly antithetical as a hero. He's big and good looking, but reserved and very prim and proper (to start with). If you're a Discworld fan, he's very, very much like Captain Carrot. But just because hes good, doesn't mean he's stupid. He is beautifully fleshed out (ha! I'm funny) and capable of experiencing and dealing with all of his emotions.
The crew of The Eurydice are fascinating; the plot kept throwing red herrings, Maguffins, and total shout-at-my-kindle shockers, and I really, really wished the book hadn't ended.
This is a wonderful book full of pirates, whores, runaways and heroes of both genders, and I fervently hope there's a series coming out of it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Twisty and entertaining
This is sort of science fiction. It is sort of romance. It is a bit of a suspense novel. In places it is very, very funny. It also has some interesting things to say about what it means to be female. All of this is wrapped up in an action packed and fast moving adventure story with our two heroes Riley and Max who end up on a space ship with no one they trust trying to keep alive as things get more and more complicated. In order to spice things up, as though they needed spiced any further, the author throws in a series of twists which often turn your whole understanding of the story and/or characters sideways.
This story is set in space but not in the shiny spaceships or among the exotic locations. It is set securely in the shabby, dangerous and particularly unlovely parts of space worlds and with people of negotiable honesty and morality. Our characters are enigmatic and troubled and absolutely not what they first appear. Most of the fun of this book is rolling with the plot and watching the author as she moves from one situation to another usually with a twist or turn thrown in along the way - and just when you are really enjoying yourself she will concentrate on an issue or cause something to happen to one of the characters which really causes you to pause and think.
As you can tell, I enjoyed this book a lot. There was one big twist at the beginning which was spectacular and well done but which i wasn't sure was needed - it made me feel like the author was playing games with teh reader for the sake of it. Apart from that it was excellently done and high quality entertainment

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart, fast, funny and the most detailed of new worlds
Smart, fast, funny and the most detailed of new worlds. In Max Seventeen, Kate Johnson has created a couple of awesome protagonists and also done her trademark new-worlds-so-real-you-could-live-in-them. The dialogue and asides had me creased up with laughter, only to gasp as the story took another twist to somewhere I wasn’t expecting. Five amazing stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
A fantastic love story set in space with the sort of larger-than-life feisty characters I have come to expect (and love) from this author. Totally believable world-building. It’s gritty, intense and pulls no punches, and the hero is just wonderful!
