Max Seventeen: Firebrand: Sci-fi action romance Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 56 ratings

Shortlisted for Paranormal Romantic Novel Of the Year 2018, the sequel to Rona award winning Max Seventeen.
Firebrand>/b> continues Max and Riley's story...

Max has always eaten life in very small bites. Now it's coming at her in great big mouthfuls.

Riley used to have very short horizons. Now the future stretches out further than he can see.

They've made the starship Eurydice their home and forged a family out of the strange and dangerous crew, but when the past comes calling it threatens to drive a wedge between them all and shatter the bonds they've made.

With the crew of the Eurydice scattered and an unknown menace stalking them across the universe, Max and Riley are faced with the ultimate question of trust and an enemy neither of them quite knows how to fight.

Max Seventeen, available from Amazon, was the first book to win the Romantic Novelists Association’s Paranormal Romantic Novel of the Year Award.

I was born in the 1980s in Yorkshire and live in Essex, where I belong to a small pride of cats. I have a second cousin who made the Guinness Book of Records for brewing the world's strongest beer, and I once ran over myself with a Segway scooter. These two things are in no way related. I've worked in an airport, a lab, and various shops, but much prefer writing because me and mornings are definitely not the best of friends.

I sold my first book in 2005 and since then have published many award-winning paranormal and contemporary romances and light-hearted mysteries, including the popular Sophie Green series. My sci-fi action romance Max Seventeen won the Paranormal Romantic Novel of the Year from the Romantic Novelists Association in 2017. Under the pen name Cat Marsters I also had a successful career in erotic romance, winning an Epic award in 2010.

I loved the first Max Seventeen book - and if it's even possible, I think I loved this one more! The characters are now almost 'old friends' - and they're foibles, hang ups etc are known and understood. That doesn't mean they've become boring - oh no, far from it. There is a new mission to be accomplished here - another 'foul scheme' to be investigated, and its dragon slain. The relationship between Max & Riley is expanded and delved into - and neither of them is making it easy for the other. There is action, drama, violence, sex - and humour. The author is saying there's a third book to come - can't wait!

I inhaled Firebrand, wishing the whole time that I read slower, so I could savor the story. I love the characters; the story is non-stop thrills with some laugh out loud moments. The lows are heartbreaking. The epilogue is priceless. I highly recommend this sci fi romance, which I read on KU but will buy to reread.

I am really enjoying this series and look forward to future books. Max and Riley are an interesting romance. The rest of the crew are also well developed. Orpheus should be a terrible character but he has been developed to show he does have redeemable qualities. All this combines to make you interested in the whole crew and all their adventures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally. FINALLY.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 5, 2017
I follow Kate Johnson on Twitter, and have had Firebrand on pre-order since she posted the link, because Max Seventeen was one of my favourite books of 2016.

    So. We come to Firebrand.

Max, Riley and the assorted ne'er-do-wells of the Eurydice are back. This time facing something worse than mosasaurs: a high society wedding on Riley's messed-up home planet, Sigma Prime. Should be straightforward, right? Well, no, because Max is involved.

What follows is an exciting, unexpected, emotional wringer of a space-action-adventure-romance-with-added-giant-monsters. Both Max and Riley have some growing up to do where it comes to each other, this time looking out for Priti, Max's innocent genius of a half-sister.

There are betrayals, double-triple-quadruple crosses, more unmaskings and guess-who's than in Mission Impossible 2, and lots and lots of FEELZ (poor Max). And this time even the implacable sex machine that is Captain Orpheus has some growing to do (but on his terms, naturally).

Firebrand is a wonderful, crazy, genre-bender of a book. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to be entertained, appalled and wooed in equal measure.

4.0 out of 5 stars A glorious, fast and fun space romp
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 4, 2018
When I read the first Max Seventeen book, I raved about it for days. It took me a while to get around to reading this one because... well, it's a sequel and you know what they say about sequels. On the other hand, I LOVED Max.

I picked up the book and within the first few pages I was completely sucked back into the world of Max, Riley and the crew of the Eurydice. This second book has the same breakneck pace and energy as the first. There's a ton of violence, cool space tech, a fair bit of sex (off page) and giant spiders. Max is still Max and in this book you get to see a bit more of her sister Priti and a lot more of Captain Orpheus (hooray!).

It's a glorious, fast and fun space romp with a mixed race heroine. If you like things like Firefly or Killjoys, you'll love this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another wild ride with the space pirates
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 27, 2017
I'd been saving this to read on holiday and hadn't dared download it until I left, as I knew I wouldn't have the will power to have it on my kindle and not read it. It was definitely worth the wait and every bit as good as I hoped. Moving on from the first book, this sequel saw Max and Riley's relationship move on and deal with some testing times. The action, humour and gore was just as strong as the first book, but we saw more development of our heroine's character as she coped with the aftermath of the events of that story. A new family, boyfriend and his family, shipmates and responsibility were all heaped on Max's shoulders - and she coped with them all in a typically untypical Max way. I would definitely recommend reading Max Seventeen first - but if you enjoy a well-written, grown-up, funny adventure that doesn't conform to the genre stereotypes - Kate Johnson has created a rollicking good read!

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 5, 2017
Oh, I loved this book. I am normally very wary of sequels because, having invested emotionally in the main characters and seen them (heart banging in chest in Max and Riley's case) through to a happy-ever-after, I intensely dislike any sort of plot-device rift that means we have to do it all over again. BUT Firebrand delivers! Masses of swearing, plenty of eye-watering violence, oodles of smart, aching-ribs humour, but no fake rift, just realistic problems caused by Max being so very Max. All in all, it's a continuation of the wild space adventure (a little less breakneck than in Max17), with satisfying dollops of character development, lesser characters being brought to the foreground and a very clever prison breakout that went totally against what I'd been expecting. Bring on the Threequel!

(There's also love. Of course there is. Kate Johnson is still the Action-Romance-in-Deep-Space queen)

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping, couldn't put it down. Justifiably nominated for a prize.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 4, 2018
I used to read a lot of science fiction in my youth but my tastes have changed. Someone said I should try this, there was a reason it was nominated for a prize, so I said I would, but I was ready not to like it. However, it's gripping and once you've started you can't put it down, you just have to find out what happens next. Now I need to read the preceding book and look out for the next one in what promises to be a series. But be warned! If you don't like copious amounts of swearing, sex and violence this may not be for you. On the other hand, if you do like romance with science fiction and could skim some of the other bits if necessary, then you should definitely read this.
