As an optimistic young woman, Becky is determined to make the best of a difficult situation in this small town where the tiniest detail is noticed and everyone knows everything about everyone else.

Fans of the television series Ghost Whisperer, The Dead Zone, and Medium will enjoy this cozy paranormal mystery series. Also on Audible.

Becky deals with a lot of departed spirits in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Such a job can get rather hectic at times. Misunderstood ghosts can create a lot of sticky problems for the living and a community such as hers. Used to dealing with ghosts daily, Becky is not easily surprised. However, on her 26th birthday, Becky gets the biggest shock she’s had in the past ten years and it’s a doozy.

Review

Sandy Penny, Editor/Publisher, Proofreader, Dreamer:HoustonSpirituality Magazine: houstonspirituality.com/ After Becky Tibbs's parents die in an automobile accident, she and her brother and sister find they have inherited the ability to see and hear ghosts. Becky takes on the ability and turns it into a positive part of her life, but her sister and brother struggle with it, feeling they've gone insane. These books are the stories of how the ability helps Becky and others who are connected with the ghosts, and it is the unfolding of her brother and sister from resistance to acceptance to embracing their gifts. The author has real-life experience with paranormal abilities, so the books have a realistic quality that makes them compelling and absorbing. I love this author, and keep finding books she has written that I really enjoy like "The Retreat."Readers' Favorite 5 Star Review ~~ An unexpected birthday visitor from the Otherside brings a decade-old mystery to light in the enchanting murder mystery, A Medium's Birthday Surprise (Becky Tibbs: A North Carolina Medium's Mystery Series) by Chariss K. Walker. After the death of her parents, Becky and her siblings are surprised to discover they inherited more than an antiques store and physical traits from their parents. The only one to embrace her new abilities, Becky has built a reputable business in helping people with problems of a ghostly nature. On her twenty-sixth birthday, Becky is surprised by a well-wisher from her distant past. The uninvited guest is Josh, the boyfriend of her youth, who deserted Becky at her Sweet Sixteen party, never to return. Curious as to why Josh has suddenly surfaced after so many years, Becky starts investigating the circumstances of his death. With the help of her family and ghostly friends, Becky uncovers a startling secret that involves the events that led to Josh's demise.
The mystery of what happens to those who linger after death is unveiled in this intriguing mystery by Chariss K. Walker. It is a quaint and delightful novel that delves into the problems of those who have died and how a young woman addresses their unfinished business. It is an exciting cozy mystery complete with murder, mystery, and spirits. The main character, Becky, is a lovable and strikingly normal person. Her ability to take the antics and explosions the ghosts subject her to as a normal and everyday occurrence is admirable, and I was pleasantly reminded of Melinda Gordon's character in the television series, Ghost Whisperer. This is a marvelous novel with a paranormal flavor and is perfect for everyone who loves a cozy ghostly mystery. If you are a fan of Ghost Whisperer, then you will not want to miss this series.

From the Author

I highly recommend that you read the books in this ongoing cozy mystery series in order, beginning with A Medium's Birthday Surprise, Book 1. This cozy mystery series with ghost stories is also available in box sets for your continual reading convenience. The first ten books are also on Audible.
This is a light, airy story about ghosts and a young medium living in Asheville, NC that helps these disembodied spirits resolve their unfinished business to they can cross over to the other side where they find peace and reunion with their loved ones.

First and foremost, Chariss K. Walker is a storyteller. She tells her readers and listeners a story as if they were sitting around a blazing campfire or at the kitchen table. She tells a story in words that anyone with any level of education can understand.

From light and airy to dark and emotionally intense, Chariss K. Walker, M.Msc., Reiki Master/Teacher, writes both fiction and nonfiction books that captivate and excite her readers. In her own words, Chariss says, "I write for those who search for the mystical in the world. I write to inspire, inform, and delight. I write for you!"

Her fiction expresses a visionary/metaphysical message that illustrates growth in a character's consciousness while utilizing a paranormal aspect. Her nonfiction books share insight, hope, and inspiration.

A quick read, likable characters, decent resolution. First of a series
The setup appears, initially, to be quite simple yet the intricacies of interpersonal relationships and trust issues deepens with each revelation. I found myself turning page after page wondering how this mystery could grow. I can't wait to read the further for more development of the sibling trio plus parents (who just happen to be non-living).

There were a lot of things I had to overlook while enjoying this book. First of all, it was just too stilted in far too many places. IF I were an accomplished writer I could point out exactly what I am trying to express, but frankly I am not. Read the story for yourself. It is a good story, just inaccurately explained. I can also admit the fault could very well be with me.

Try to imagine that immediately following your parents deaths--you discover that they are perfectly visible---and quite nosy as a matter of fact. Becky the youngest of the three siblings takes to all this like a fish in water. She loves helping people who have not quite passed over --and they swarm to her for help. So do the very living people who are being visited by ghosts! Her brother and sister resist--and that is putting it mildly!! The things they do to ignore the ghosts!!

Then a very angry young man who hadn't been seen since Becky's 16th birthday party--starts appearing. Becky is determined to find out what actually happened to him and to put his soul to rest.

In this light and airy novel Chariss K Walker gets in her take of spirituality and life itself. This is the first in this series and I will be awaiting the next one to see what Becky's brother ends up doing!

I sent this novel to my kindle because of my love of North Carolina and fascination with signs from the departed, and finally got around to reading it on airplanes this past weekend. Liked how it took me back to NC and Asheville in specific. Enjoyed learning more about the town and especially the spiritual community. The author makes it easily understandable how the departed and living may communicate. I appreciated how she works commonly reported signs into the story--she and her medium have it all figured out, and the story just might bring comfort to those grieving. It’s a cozy mystery, a genre I don't typically read, which may be why I felt the style was too much telling and not enough showing, the writing a bit stiff. Fans of cozies will most likely see the author grow right along with the entertaining series.

The first of the Becky Tibbs: A North Carolina Medium's cozy mystery series, this book introduces Medium Becky Tibbs, who on her 26th birthday, receives a vision from her boyfriend who died ten years ago on her 16th birthday. She needs to find out why Josh is so angry, why he's chosen to visit her after all this time, and why he didn't know he was dead. With the aid of a detective who once had a crush on her sister and her two siblings, Becky discovers who killed Josh and why. This helps him have closure and enter the light.

The best part of this book, in my opinion, was the relationship between Becky and her brother and sister who, also mediums, have chosen not to use their powers, although her brother begins to change his mind at the end of the story. I also liked the fact that Becky works in an antique shop, a perfect place to find ghosts. The setting in Asheville, North Carolina, is also interesting. This book has hooked me into checking out the others in the series. I recommend giving it a try.

This is the first book in the Becky Tibbs: A North Carolina Medium Mystery Series, in which medium Becky Tibbs uses her paranormal abilities to help solve mysteries and help ghosts find peace.

While skeptics might think that such blending of cozy mystery and paranormal investigation sounds contrived, Walker has created characters and storylines that seem realistic and eminently believable. A range of world views and perspectives are represented by different characters in the story, and the reader is respectfully left to draw their own conclusions.

Regardless of one’s philosophy and world view, this is a really interesting and well-crafted mystery story. Becky’s path to solving the mystery is challenging and complex, and she must rely on investigation and logic to solve the problems she encounters along the way.

The writing is good and the action and intrigue of the story builds well, right up to the end of the book.

This is a series I would like to read more of.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Light Hearted Read.

I don't usually read anything to do with mediums and ghosts. However, for some reason, i thought I would take a look at this novel and I have to say I really enjoyed it. After their parents' death, three siblings learn that they have the ability to see and speak to ghosts. But only one of them, Becky, is willing to use her gift and actually become a Medium. She helps grieving relatives to get over their loss, while aiding new ghosts to come to terms with the fact they have died. But then something happens at her birthday party, which reopens a ten year old murder case, which she is determined to solve.
I found this to be a most enjoyable, light hearted read. Not to be missed.

I really enjoyed this! It's an easy, quirky read with some great characters in a unique situation. I particularly enjoyed the different ways Becky and her siblings handle their gift. While it's quite a light-hearted read, there is some interesting exploration of life after death which adds another layer to the book. Good fun and I'll definitely look out for more in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Ghostly Tale
Reviewed in Canada on August 14, 2020
This light-hearted tale of ghosts and mediums is a wonderful light read. Well written, it flows quickly from one ghostly crisis to another. And filled with ghostly crises makes the story what it is. Becky is quite busy as a medium in her home town. At her birthday party, as many ghosts came as real live people. Two ghosts in particular play a large role in the story. Josh didn't even seem to know that he was dead when he showed up at Becky's party. He just knew he was very angry. He turned that anger towards Becky. In the meantime, Becky was helping another woman in town come to grips and get some closure with her dead husband's ghost. As she investigated, she found that the ghosts had a connection and tried to get the two ghosts to come to grips with what was bothering them. I found this story quite amusing, fast-paced, and even believable. But then I do believe in ghosts too. A wonderful afternoon's delight to read. I will read more of Chariss K. Walker's books.
