As Ava was thinking looking at the young dead girl, it was the living that gave up the secrets, to solving a case. Secrets from the past came to the present as murder. There were many who had secrets and lies and you have blackmail. How this ties in with college kids, a professor, made for an interesting case. I like Detective Neal, calm and concern for his son Archie and sister. As for Ava she has a lot to learn when her gut instinct questions rather he is a good guy or bad it fails her.
DARK SECRETS
Detective Neal, wants to say something to Ava on the last case of how poor judgment led her to be injured. Working together again was a little uncomfortable till a new case began. The murder in the early hours , what called him out, that was so urgent. The secrets the people had in this small town, began to uncover that some people knew one another before.
A pact that had turned deadly, and how they were still disillusioned as adults led to more anger and murder. Complex plot of hiw murders were
connected..
HER HUSBAND’S SECRET
When her husband had been murdered, the wife seems unfazed by his death. At college there was the four of them that was close, open relationships for several years changed that for Laura and Ewan. She has acquainted now after ten years with the couple and their three children.Finding all the lies and secrets her husband had. Steph he loved more than life he told this couple, and after she went missing he asked Laura in marriage. The pieces are falling in place of why he was distant and moody. What secrets does her friends have with the missing girl, and now murder. What they thought was right when they were young, now has destroyed many families. A twisted tale of the past, Laura wasn’t aware of.
THEIR FATAL SECRET
Once again a murder to solve,by the river two women, a list at home, who did it. We meet a new detective, Tom, along with Neal and Merry to solve. Good plot and characters. Readers will definitely enjoy, can be read separate, though series is good.
DIRTY SECRETS
Grief is grief no matter how much money one has. A call made by the wife, telling Inspector Neal and Ava, it was not suicide. Yes, he was bothered by something to do with the business , or investors, or a son in law he didn’t approve of. The daughter Ruth, they had an argument, when she found out what Dad had done, telling him, they all had secrets. What a plot for the readers, it is a twisted game of power, a sycopath, lovers, and all that deal in lies. Till the chain is broken, and murder now takes place, a thrilling plot to the end
MURDEROUS.SECRETS..
Ava and PJ go to a barn dance for charity with boughten tickets. Ava getting fresh air, and seeing the antics of some young kids. An ambulance was it a prop and she had jump to her usually action that it was more. Two murders are found, and the connection is puzzling. Narrowing down to revenge of an eye for an eye, The mistakes one who couldn’t do it. caused lives to end to soon. A chilling story of secrets within a family.
This last one was not one I could get into. Maybe because Ava and Neal were not the head of. Seemed to ramble and not flowing. The series and this box was excellent, with good characters, well done.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI truly enjoyed this series! The author starts out with cliffhangers then keeps us guessing right through the books. They made me want to head for the English countryside with a side trip to Scotland. The author definitely has a certain way with descriptions; this series was better than a movie!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA really good series. Good plots, really good characters. Neal is a gem of a man. But…the author is so incredibly bigoted against Christians. In two of the books, Christians were hateful and bigoted against gays. In the last book, the Christian parents believed it was better that their gay son was murdered rather than live as a gay man. Wow. AND, they were going to send him to conversion therapy, where in the US, “it involves electrical shock treatment.” Seriously, cannot the author see her own bigotry? It greatly ruined what was a rather good series.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis series had me enthralled so much that I stayed up late reading until 2 to 3 for six nights.
What I liked the best was just how complicated the plots were.
The writing is incredibly descriptive.
The plots are very well thought out and polished.
The author has crafted an incredible group of characters they are well developed with backstories, faults, and warts.
Every book gives a little more than about DS Ava Merry, DI Jim Neal, PC/DC PJ Jackson, and all the others.
I want more of Merry and Neal.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseJanice Frost is a truly talented mystery writer. No particular “formula” is discernible across the six books in this series; each is different in its construction and how the story progresses. The characters are well developed and relatable and they evolve across the six books. While we do see their emotional lives, we are not overwhelmed by the extreme emo that too many mystery writers impose on their characters (and readers). All in all, each is a nicely balanced story and while the series wrapped with the sixth book, there is room for more should the author decide to write them. Would be interesting to see a second series focused on the same central characters (or at least the two key ones) 10 or 20-years on (or a book or series 10 years on and another 20 years on). Meanwhile, I’m off to find more books by Janice Frost.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWell written, with interesting characters that you can't help becoming attached to. The plots are gripping and move quickly. And there is a bit of a romantic under current as well as glimpses of the human side of the characters. I was truly sad that I reached the end, I found that I wanted more!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2022Format: KindleVerified Purchaseinteresting plots, enough twists to keep your interest, moves right along. Ended at a good stopping point..enjoyed them all. thanks
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseTerrific characters and twisted plots make this series an exciting read.
I'm hoping there are many more books in the future!

5.0 out of 5 stars A new TV series?
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAn excellent set of police detective stories. Complex characters all the way. Who doesn't like a good police yarn? Difficult to put down once you start. Although the stories take place in a fictional part of the UK, if you read these books, you will recognise where you are. A very good read and recommended to fans of this genre.
