About the author

Lisa Hofmann's debut novel, Stealing the Light, received top star ratings and reviews on the Writer's Digest and Publisher's Weekly platforms for independently published works.
Lisa is a European-based writer, born in 1975. She was educated in the nerd factories of Germany and the mystery moors of Ireland. Before she began writing medieval and shapeshifter fiction in her late thirties, she worked internationally as an interpreter, translating specialized publications on early education and literacy.
She is a genuine Dr Jekyll and Mrs. Hyde: a teacher of multilingual children by day, and producer of character-driven fantasy novels by night. Since Stealing the Light, she has published three other novels and several shorter works. She writes predominantly in English and works with a weather-proofed Pennsylvania-based American editor.
Lisa lives in Germany with her husband, three outrageously outspoken teenaged children, and a house full of exceptionally vocal pets. Whenever she finds herself teetering on the brink of boredom, she will generally resort to exploring old towns and castles, walks in the woods, and reading anything that other people throw at her.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2021I can't get enough of Lisa Hofmann' s books! Having all of her shapeshifter stories in one collection is wonderful. Each tale is gripping, a mystery to unravel. Stories so fantastical, but in such straightforward language that they seem to be true. Hofmann is emerging as the storyteller of this generation.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2021This was an intense read. The five stories all have a dark undertone and they are very gripping.
I read them all in one go, and maybe that was a misstake. I have a feeling that all five stories would have been even better as full length novels. Especially the two first, Aura and Amberflame.
There are great characters and good storylines, but the stories occasionally felt a little hurried along and I would have likes som moments of peace along the way.
If you like shapeshifters, fantasy and high fantasy this is a book for you.

I haven't read a lot of short stories or novellas so I was very glad to expand my horizon with these stories. Each one of these had bittersweet but powerful impact even in these limited spaces. Great respect for the author.
I enjoyed the suspense with the supernatural aspects. I bought into each and every story and I appreciated the respect shown to the reader.
I also really loved the strong females in each one of these stories. Bravo!

Overall, I enjoyed the stories in this book. There were some that I was a bit disappointed with due to the ending, as I thought there could have been better endings, however it did not detract from my enjoyment.
Some stories I did enjoy better than others, however for 'short' stories I think the author did very well with world-building, character development and creating suspense.
It is always so challenging to leave a review without spoilers, so all I can say is this is definitely worth the read.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2021Tales from the Midnight Forest is a wonderful compendium of escapist fantasy fiction featuring shape shifters that pull forth the readers sympathies even as their dark and sometimes twisted tales unfold.
Imaginative and deftly written with interesting tweaks to the shifter mythos I found enough mystery, subterfuge, adventure and romance to hold my reader interest throughout.
