A rip-roaring, non-stop-action, serial killer thriller set in the world of nightclubs, doormen, beautiful VIP hostesses, and ruthless gangsters.

"What a story! Fast paced, exciting, I just couldn't put it down."

Midnight’s. The hottest nightspot in town. Danny Norton runs the door. His job is to keep people safe from those that would harm them. Right now they include the serial killer terrorising clubbers, and a ruthless drug dealer looking to grow his operation.

Ex-boxer Danny is scared of nothing and no one. Ecept Vicki. Vicki is Midnight's beautiful VIP hostess. Danny thinks Vicki is gorgeous. Trouble is, she barely knows he exists... or does she? With a bullying ex-husband who won't leave her alone, and the killer stalking ever closer, Vicki needs someone she can depend on. Danny would love to take the job, if only he could summon the courage to apply.

But when the killer turns his attentions on Midnight’s, Danny knows that to keep his clientele, and the woman he loves, safe, and keep his business running, he must draw on all his reserves of street know-how, determination and guts - as well as calling in favours from the sorts of people he once promised to never get involved with, but right now has no choice.

Born in Liverpool, England, Robert F Barker served thirty years as a police officer and detective, most of it working in and around some of Northwest UK's grittiest towns and cities. He writes stories that are dark and edgy, but credible enough for the reader to believe they may be based on some sort of reality, which of course they sometimes are. (Names changed to protect the innocent.. etc.). During his service, he learned that no matter where people live, whatever their position in society, they are never far from places where darkness dwells. Those places may be inner city sink estates where drugs are dealt and violence rules, or leafy suburbs where neat gardens and lace curtains conceal the sort of evil that no one ever imagines - until the worst happens.

As a former Senior Investigating Officer and Firearms Incident Commander, he knows all about the pressures police officers face, as well as what it means to have to make life-and-death decisions in the heat of live operations. Given his background, his stories are as authentic a portrayal of crime and policing as can be found anywhere in today's crime fiction.

He splits his writing-time between his family home in Cheshire, UK, and the beautiful island of Cyprus, where he gains inspiration for a series of Cyprus-based thrillers which he intends will compliment his crime novels.

First, the length of the book was great. I am so tired of authors who think 200 pages is a book. Second, very well written both grammatically and spelling. Third, the storyline, characters and setting were also great. Last but certainly not least, so much action, plot and sub-plots that it made this book a must read. I had trouble putting it down and was never bored. So good to read a book that has it all.

Carver books better. I liked the Danny Vicky connection. I'm not sure I will look for more about Danny Norton.

I enjoyed the fact that this book is written from the viewpoint of a nightclub bouncer called Danny (actually the owner of a security company who provide door services to nightclubs and pubs), who is far more complex and intelligent than most people think, and a lot more than 'the hardest man around'. The biggest contract he has is with the nightclub 'Midnights', which is where most of the action takes place.
Without going too much into the story, Danny faces lots of challenges including helping the police find the killer, but also protecting his contract and the clientele of the nightclub against a very unpleasant Russian gangster.
I liked Danny's character, he is brave and resourceful, but at the same time he suffers from insecurities, making him very believable, I also thought that the way that his relationship with Vicki is extremely well written and credible.
There are some excellently written action sequences, although I liked that a lot of the violence is implied rather than explicit making it an easier read whilst still retaining an atmosphere of violence and threat.
If you enjoy thrillers, particularly British crime thrillers, then this book should definitely be on your TBR pile.
I received an advance copy of the book, but have voluntarily reviewed it.

To start with, I'm well and truly over crime thrillers. They are basically written to the same formula, a serial stalker/killer, a beautiful loved victim and the dogged detective who gets his man. Midnight's Door definitely turned this formula on it's head and made for a compelling, fast paced story. With so many different aspects to this story, each one holding the reader's attention, it is hard to put down. Finally, near the heart stopping end, the battery ran out on my kindle and it got the fastest charge ever! Would love to read more with Danny the bouncer, sorry, security door man taking centre stage.

An intimate look behind the scenes nightclub security team as they battle drug dealers threatened aggressive takeovers and a serial killer.
An edgy plot, full of suspense and sexual tension. Brilliantly portrayed through the eyes of Danny the boss of a team trying to keep the club and its clients safe. His troubled past life and confused feelings for a night club hostess, complicate things when rivals and enemies conspire to bring him down.
Good to see Jamie Carver and Jess Graylake are still around but on the edge of this tense thriller.
