Millwright's Daughter (Kerr's Ferry Mill Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 17 ratings

After the death of her mother in 1882, Eliza Wells goes to live with her grandmother, Caroline Arnold, whom her parents named as her guardian. Not long after her grandmother has a stroke, her uncle, Joseph Wells from Kerr’s Ferry, California, whom she has never met in person, arrives in Ohio and whisks her away for a visit with family while her grandmother recovers. At first Eliza enjoyed visiting her cousins in California. Now she grows concerned at her uncle’s repeated refusals to arrange for her transportation home. Her grandmother has not replied to her letters, so Eliza can no longer look to her for help. Since Caroline, slowly recovering from her stroke, has heard nothing from her granddaughter in months, she hires Kit Halsey, a former railroad detective, to find her granddaughter and bring her home. He agrees, for what he will receive in pay for the job will put him through law school. Joseph urges Eliza to spend time with his business associate, Daniel Irwin, almost fifteen years her senior. Unlike her cousin, Eliza does not care for Daniel. The only man for whom she feels an attraction is the new freight driver, Kit Halsey. Startling details from the past come to light, and the only person Eliza can turn to for help is Kit—if he is willing to risk his future to save her. This novella is also part of the anthology, Under a Mulberry Moon.

Eliza's uncle has claimed responsibility for his
niece. Eliza wants to go back home to her
grandmother, but her uncle says no!

Kit is hired by Eliza's grandmother to find out
why she hasn't answered her letters and to
    bring Eliza home.

What does Kit find out? How will he get her
to trust him? What does her aunt do for her?
You must get this excellent book so you can
find out all that happens! I Highly recommend
it, you will like it I'm sure.

Wonderful characters and an engaging plot made this an enjoyable read.

There's a bit of action and surprises, for both the characters and the reader.

I enjoy reading books by this author not only because I love her stories but because I appreciate the historical details she includes. The Millwright's Daughter did not disappoint. I enjoyed the story of Eliza and Kit but almost as equally liked the secondary characters and the added element of surprise that I didn't see coming.

My first time reading this author's work, and it did not disappoint! Absolutely loved Eliza and Kit! They were perfect for each other. I loved the stealth with which he made sure the wicked Uncle Joseph didn't see him meeting with Eliza. My absolute favorite character was Grandmother Arnold, though! What a hoot she was lol! I was very glad that Julie got her one true love ❤️

I really enjoyed reading this book! It was not your usual romance story. I thought the historical elements of the story were interesting and I felt I was right their with Eliza, Kit, Grandma Arnold, the cousins, Aunt Phoebe and Uncle Joseph. It was a romance story with a hint of mystery and a surprising ending. I highly recommend it if you want a sweet romantic book.

This a wonderfully different story!  I loved everything about it, except the bad guy!  I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series!  I especially loved the epilogue!

Good twists, one of those books that make you unsure of who the bad guys are supposed to be. I really liked the epilogue. It felt only right & fair.
