Mine to Keep: A Dark Romantic Suspense Standalone Novel (Protection Series) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 1,189 ratings

An unlikely friendship, a stalking ex, and a serial killer on the loose.

FBI profiler Charlie Bekham prides himself on three unique talents: hacking any database, making women swoon with a cocky smirk, and letting no one see the desperate man buried deep. When a string of murders in Louisville, KY, requires extra help, he’s forced to partner with the brilliant yet shy Special Agent Rhyan Riggs to hunt the killer. Long nights of working the case fan the growing attraction between them, making Charlie question if “just friends” is enough.

Special Agent Rhyan Riggs is running from her past—a narcissistic ex, to be exact. Determined to move on from the terrible breakup, she focuses solely on her career… until him. Special Agent Charlie Bekham. Covered in tattoos, cocky as hell, and bad-boy hot, he’s exactly the type she should avoid at all costs but can’t seem to stay away from.

With more victims and at a dead end, Rhyan does the unthinkable—she puts herself in the killer’s sights. When the killer takes the bait and disappears with the woman Charlie’s fallen for, can he piece together the remaining clues before Rhyan becomes the next body found?

Mine to Keep is the fourth book in the interconnected standalone Protection Series. Each book can be read as a standalone, but because of character crossover, reading from book 1, Mine to Protect, is suggested. Due to foul language, discussion of emotional abuse, mention of suicide, and detailed intimate scenes, this book is recommended for readers 18+.

Criminal Minds Meets Mr Teddy Hamilton!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️out of 5️⃣ for Story 🌶️🌶️🌶️ out of 5️⃣ for spice 🔈🔈🔈🔈🔈 out of 5️⃣ for narration Tropes: 🚨 Law Enforcement 🚨 Forced Proximity 🚨 Workplace Romance 🚨 Friends to Lovers Okay but like how did Kennedy L. Mitchell combine my love for reading, with my love for Criminal Minds in this book! Holy crap!! This book had me hooked right from the start! And I was team Charlie and Rhyan from the moment they interacted and my support was solidified when Rhyan spoke to her bestie, Olivia! Teddy Hamilton (who is one of my favorite narrators) is the voice of Charlie, while Maxine Mitchell voices Rhyan. The back and forth between Ryan and Charlie was just so… HOTTTTTTT. Teddy and Maxine did an amazing job with the dialogue!! They had me grinning and blushing while listening to the audio and it wasn’t even the s** scenes! It was just the flirting!!!! Rhyan’s story was beautifully portrayed by Maxine. And both narrators did such an amazing job portraying their growing relationship. The sexual tension between these two was just so 🥵 The scene with Charlie in his bedroom thinking of Rhyan had me blushing!!!! Teddy did an amazing job portray the sexual frustration during this scene… I couldn’t concentrate lol Regarding the book itself, both characters were so realistic and I loved that they were relatable (in a way) lol but that made me love them and their story even more!! Being part of the FBI and working on a case together was already a great story plot. But Mrs. Mitchell kept us all engaged with her amazing writing skills. She gave us the feels and emotional rollercoaster when it came to both of our main characters. And the fact that Rhyan went under cover, just proves how much of a badass she really is! And Maxine really pushes that through her narration. While Mr. Teddy really shows just how protective and possessive Charlie can be 😉

    Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
    Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
    POV: Dual 1st Person
    M/F

First off, Rhyan is my spirit animal, or she would be if fiction humans could be spirit animals…. You know what? I don’t care if they can or can’t. She is my spirit animal. Her quirky, fun fact loving, anxiety driven, dual personality having self speaks to my very soul. I am totally in love with her.

Secondly, WAY TO GO Kennedy L Mitchell for addressing the issue of male objectification! I admit to admiring the male body but I don’t hold with using a male any more than I do using a female. No means no, regardless of gender. It is not a suggestion or an invitation to simply try harder. I LOVE that this had apart in this book. Maybe that will help people be more aware.

Charlie and Rhyan have a depth to them that a lot of authors struggle to bring to their characters. I am in awe of how they go from being words on a page to feeling like close friends. I keep finding this in KLM books and I hope it never goes away. It is part of what keeps me coming back to read them again and again.

This book was so good that I genuinely did everything in my power to prolong the experience simply because I legit was not ready to say goodbye to my new friends. I have never WILLINGLY stopped reading to do dishes ( my most hated of household chores) but I did so this morning. Why? Because I was too close to the end of the book and I was just not ready yet. Y’all, I WILLINGLY DID DISHES JUST TO HAVE MORE TIME WITH CHARLIE AND RHYAN. That is MEGA love. Like, full on Epic, moves mountains, causes miracles LOVE! Maybe not raising the dead miracles but like, me willingly doing dishes miracles. 🤷‍♀️

I always worry when I highly anticipate a book and preorder it that maybe it won’t me expectations. Maybe I built it up too much. Put too much hope into what I wanted it to be and I will be disappointed. Not only did this book meet expectations, it blew them out of the water. It was so far above my expectations that I couldn’t even reach that high from my post book ride on cloud nine….

If you haven’t read this series yet I suggest getting started ASAP because this book is one you most definitely won’t want to miss!

    Happy Reading my Friends!

This was my first Kennedy L. Mitchell novel/audio and it won’t be my last. I was pulled in to the book (which is part of Mitchell’s larger Protection series but can also be read as a standalone) from the start. The MCs, Charlie and Rhyan, are both FBI profilers with the BSU and I totally dug the Criminal Minds vibes. From the cold open prologue to Rhyan’s Reid-like quirkiness and Charlie’s Morgan-esque broody protectiveness (not “baby girl” to be had, but still great chemistry), Mitchell takes the best elements of that similar context, but still creates her own approach. Rhyan is brilliant at her job but insecure in her personal life, with a toxically coercive former relationship in her past. She’s fall on sharing random factoids to cover awkwardness, which (of course) is total cat nip to Charlie. He’s the junior profiler in the scenario, which was a refreshing change, but he also has tech skills (hacker past, strong personal reasons for wanting to be a profiler rather than just a cybercrimes guy). He isn’t taken as seriously on the job because of his good looks and is tired of being seen as only good for a sexy encounter; he wants a true connection. As their attraction and connection simmers and their relationship grows, Rhyan and Charlie are also on the trail of a serial killer. The suspense elements had good pacing and build compellingly, and there was a solid balance with the romance. Mitchell also managed some humorous moments despite the heavy subject (the stakeout scene had some great levity without harming the seriousness). Plus, she also set up the next hero (Bryson) really well and I am excited to read his story.

My minor quibble is in regards to the oddness of Rhyan’s BF Olivia calling Charlie without knowing him and revealing some of Rhyan’s history to him. I know Olivia is trying to be a good friend so that Charlie can be on guard in case something happens, but I couldn’t help but feel that some of what she shared was Rhyan’s to tell. Props to Charlie for coming clean immediately to her about it, so at least it didn’t become a major tangential plot point; it was just a writerly choice that stuck out as less smooth than others Mitchell made throughout the rest of the novel.

The audiobook performances here were spectacular. Maxine Mitchell and Teddy Hamilton were in fine form. Mitchell is one of my fav narrators and she captured both Rhyan’s confidence as well as her vulnerability. Plus, her delivery of those adorably awkward factoids always made me smile. And when she does male voices - holy hotness, Batman! Hamilton has this great range where he perfectly delivers the sweet and funny, but the listener can still totally buy him as growly sexy when it counts. Charlie is a bit of a bossy dirty talker and Hamilton totally delivered on that. The narration was just *chef’s kiss* all around.

Definitely worthwhile whether you listen or read, though listening is highly recommended because of the performances.

I received and ALC via Home Cooked Books and read via KU. All opinions are my own.

Another thrilling Romantic Suspense from Kennedy Mitchell!!

I continue to love the Protection series novels from this author. Mine to Keep was the perfect mix and balance of romance and investigative drama. I was so engaged in the investigation aspect of the story. I hate to keep saying the same things about books within this series but it’s true each book is like watching a new episode of your favorite crime series. There is an element of fear, suspense and mystery that completely captures your interest. The build up keeps you guessing and the climax has you on the edge of your seat. It’s really brilliantly written. The romance doesn’t take a back seat either. Rhyan and Charlie were flirty, fun, swoony, sweet, and steamy. Rhyan lacks confidence in her personal life stemming from years of mental abuse from her ex and Charlie is really determined to make her see and feel how amazing she is . They compliment each other perfectly and I just loved loved loved how much he seemed to adore every little thing about her.

I did read the book prior to listening to the audio version and while I loved the read and had already given it 5 stars I’d give another ten for the narration. Maxine Mitchell and Teddy Hamilton were the perfect choices to bring these characters to life and brought a whole new experience to the story. I’m a big fan of both and find you can never go wrong listening to them.

Would have been a great story if we didn't have to hear about Charlies dick every 2nd paragraph. If all Kennedy's books have this much rubbish, it will be the last one I read.
