*The Wishing Shelf Book Finalist* - a real award voted for by Children.
This is the first book in this wonderful series from Tots Outdoors books and it is aimed at encouraging children (and their grown-ups) to spend time outside. In this book, you will follow Dave as he explores the outdoors. You will share in his excitement as he learns about minibeasts as he takes on this journey.
There are many creatures that live outside who have fascinating stories and who help to make our environment a better place. Did you know that worms have been around for hundreds of years? Or that honeybees buzz because they flap their wings so fast? You’ll discover more facts about worms and honey bees (as well as all the other minibeasts Dave encounters) whilst reading this beautifully illustrated book.
According to the Child Mind Institute:

About the authors
Nicky Gould is a children’s author from Essex, England.
Nicky was inspired to write her debut book Dave Explores the Outdoors… Minibeasts embracing the family passion of being outside. She thought it would be a nice thing to do for her daughter but the overwhelming, wonderful feedback from readers has motivated her to continue her author career.
Aware of the many financial burdens upon families, Nicky is conscious of creating story themes which are inclusive to all budgets – there are no costs to replicating the outside adventures her characters enjoy.
In her spare time, Nicky can be found enjoying life with her family and friends, snuggled up on the sofa watching a film or sitting in a café or pub with her laptop.
Nicky hopes her stories will educate, empower and inspire children and their grown-ups.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2020Format: PaperbackFrom the Oh Bless It! desk - This book charmed my socks off! The author, Nicky Gould, has penned a rhythmic tale of educational adventure and intrigue. I’ve read this book to my children several times and I still get a goofy grin on my face as I turn the pages!
In this book, Dave – a friend who lives among the trees – is off on a mission to find minibeasts! What minibeasts will he discover, and what can he learn about them? It is a challenge issued to all who read this and hear its tale. We discover the minibeasts that Dave finds and interacts with and are encouraged to get outside to discover the world around us – to find our own minibeasts!
My absolute favorite aspect of this book is the poetic rhythm. Rhyme in education promotes language development, helps to improve memory and cognitive development, and promotes a love of reading. On top of all of those educational benefits, I’m also loving that facts about the minibeasts are woven into the prose and expanded on after the story is over.
I’m thrilled to have the honor of reviewing the first in this series – a series to help parents get outdoors with activities for their kiddos without breaking the bank. A hunt for creatures, great and small, is a perfect solution to inspire adventure, awaken imaginations, and create long-lasting memories of family bonding. Highly recommend! This book would be wonderful for ages 3 to… how old am I? Order your copy today; you won’t regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely imaginative and informative book for children
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseAbsolutely loved this book as did my 2 and 6 year olds. The book really gets the children’s attention and it was lovely that at the end my 6 year old was telling me all the fun facts that he’d learnt (not ashamed to admit, many I didn’t know until now).
Dave is extremely loveable and we’re already looking forward to another one in this series.
Strongly recommend.
It also encourages outdoor exploring and looking at surroundings, something that lots of children definitely need more of.
Also in the last page there are actual real pictures of the bugs with extra facts which just added to an already lovely book.
I hope that the author becomes as popular as the likes of Julia Donaldson as we definitely want to see what else she has in store for our bedtime reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Day out with Dave!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFirst of all I have to say I Love the rhythm of the writing in this book and especially the trick of leaving the last word out to be guessed by the reader, this is used in many children’s stories but works exceptionally well here.
In my experience (25yrs as a children’s nanny) Children love to contribute to a story no matter what age!
It is a simple tale of exploration, could be in a garden or wood, but Dave is a likeable friendly looking character made of wood? and Is easily relatable.
Lovely colourful illustrations and great bit of information about the mini beasts at the end !
All in all I would give it a thumbs up as a well written informative first book on minibeasts!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for all children - We love Dave.
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseDelightful book for children, we LOVED it, the whole family was thoroughly engaged and we ALL learnt something new! Enjoyed the rhyming too.
Great at encouraging little ones to go and explore the outdoors, and to be curious about creepy crawlies rather than wary - we finished reading and put on our wellies and and headed off outside.
Enjoyed it so much we bought another copy for my friend and her children. We loved the main character Dave and can’t wait for the next instalment. Definitely a must for your bookshelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for learning and exploring
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseA wonderful and educational book, beautifully illustrated. Great for young children exploring and learning about wildlife. Love how each page has rhyming clues, and allows for the child to guess the minibeast. Taught me a thing or two.
