About the author

After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live.
In 2013 Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head and I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later.
3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series – the DC Harriet Taylor Cornwall series.
The Beekeeper was published and soon hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well.
I continued to self-publish the Smith series and Unworthy hit the shelves in 2018 with amazing results. I therefore made the decision to self-publish The Backpacker which is book 3 in the Detective Harriet Taylor series and was published in July 2018.
After The Backpacker I had an idea for a totally new start to a series – a collaboration between the Smith and Harriet thrillers and The Enigma was born. It brings together the brooding, enigmatic Jason Smith and the more level-headed Harriet Taylor. Dropzone followed shortly after and the third in the series, The Raven Girl finished things off.
Miranda is something totally different. What was to be a stand-alone psychological thriller, it is a real departure from anything else I’ve written before. The ending begged for a sequel and, Mistress was born. Medusa completes the Miranda trilogy.
There are now 25 DS Smith books available with many more planned for the future.
I wanted a break from the crime thriller genre so I came up with The Divide - a macabre horror tale of survival, but crime will always be my true love.
A new series featuring Irishman, DI Liam O'Reilly begins with Blood on the Island, and that was followed by ten more mysteries set on the island of Guernsey.
When I'm not writing I love sailing, guitars and jumping out of perfectly good planes. I'm lucky to have a huge lake on my doorstep as well as a world-class skydiving drop zone.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2019MIRANDA: SHE MIGHT JUST KILL AGAIN is creepy chilling. Murder and mayhem discussed with such nonchalance it's heart stopping.
This book will have your hair standing on end.
MIRANDA: She might just give you nightmares.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2019Many thanks to the author / Books n All Promotions for the advanced digital copy of MIRANDA. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Miranda is a serial killer. She killed 12 people, declared criminally insane and is residing in a secure hospital.
Miranda relates to the reader each and every crime in detail. Some she says were accidents, but then she got hooked on killing.
But the big question is .... did she really commit these crimes? Or is this all in her own mind?
The police have one opinion ... her therapist has another.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2019This is a real twisted mystery. Very interesting and fascinating plot with compelling and unique characters. The ending was a true surprise.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2019I have been extremely excited by this book since I first heard about it and I was not disappointed.
I have read all of Stewart's books, as well as listening to all the Smith ones on Audible and love them all. This book is no different in that sense, but it is a standalone psychological thriller, which is different.
With this book we start off by knowing who the serial killer is, but not what she has done. The killer in question is Miranda, who is in a maximum security mental institution as she was found guilty of being a serial killer, but convinced the judge that she was insane.
We start off by meeting her and throughout the book there are chapter flashbacks to her crimes, along with getting to know her now through other chapters.
The way the book is written is very clever as we slowly learn more about her, the facility she is in, and the crimes she has committed, along with following the police investigation of the crimes throughout the book.
I love this book as it is so different from normal crime books and had me hooked from the very first page. There are so many twists and turns throughout and you never quite know Miranda and her mental state as the drugs and her persona are very clever entwined leaving you guessing as to whether she really is insane or just using the system to her own advantage.
It isn't until the very end that you finally figure her and everything else out by which time you have been fully immersed in the storyline.
Overall it is a very unique book and Stewart has definitely upped his game with this one. The book is a brilliant read and one I would highly recommend to everyone.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2019I finished reading this book on my lunch break today and wanted to get my thoughts down as soon as I could for my stop on the blog tour!
I have to say that I really enjoyed this story, it was different from what I expected based on the author’s previous releases but in a very good way, I thought it was a really good way to approach and tell the story. I loved the different time periods where you go forward and back in time to learn about the past, and present for Miranda.
Miranda is one of those characters that you will remember for a while. She has a brilliant unstable personality and I loved that about her, she as really well developed and I can imagine the author having lots of fun writing about her.
4.5 stars from me for this one, rounded up to 5 stars for Goodreads and Amazon – very enjoyable thriller and I can’t wait for his next book to be released!

5.0 out of 5 stars MIRANDA
Miranda is a standalone written by the very talented author of the Smith series: Stewart Giles.
Having read and enjoyed all of the Smith series I was looking forward to reading this as it is something different although still of the same genre.
Miranda is almost 28 years old and an inpatient at Crowfield Security Hospital which is joined on to Boston prison in Otherly, North Yorkshire. I was hooked from the beginning where we get to meet Miranda and follow the events that led to her being held in Crowfield instead of having to serve a prison sentence. As with some of Stewart's previous books, I have enjoyed the interspersed humour throughout the stories and this also had me chuckling away and didn't disappoint! Had some of the situations happened in real life then I would certainly not laugh and I would feel a mix of different emotions but I love Stewart's writing style; he writes the greatest stories with cleverly thought out characters and just the right amount of humour.
The chapters alternate between Miranda in the present day and then back 3 years to when it all began - an accident that resulted in a man losing his life just before Christmas. From then on victims are found and the only detail of significance for the police comes from some witnesses who report seeing a woman with black hair but they can't recall her facial features - she has a face that people simply just can't remember. I couldn't wait to finish it to reach the conclusion which shocked me to the core! You'd think that with knowing the killer, there wouldn't be much of a story but this most definitely is not the case; it's a very clever storyline and makes for compulsive reading. I loved Miranda's character and felt sorry for her many times as some of the hospital staff are very unsavoury characters and I felt angry at their actions; luckily there was one who showed some kindness to Miranda. DI Patricia Keene and her team really have their work cut out and the evidence mounts up for one of the murders but is the suspect responsible for the other crimes, too - is Miranda innocent? I tried to work out the connection between the victims - is there a connection? From start to finish, it's a fast paced read with lots of twists and I dare you to read without being hooked! Another highly recommended read - thank you!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read!
The storyline was appealing and easy to follow. Characters were clear and well refined. The only issue I had (hence the 4 stars) was I found the end slightly confusing and had to re-read. Otherwise, smashing entertainment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cleverly constructed story
Oh my goodness, this book is amazing. Such a cleverly constructed story. Very well written. The reader is soon drawn into multiple storylines and you want to know what happens next.
Who is Miranda? How come so many have been affected by her? Why did she kill so many? Whats her life like now in rehabilitation?
Reminiscient of a modern day Ruth Rendell thriller. We know who the killer is, but its not a complicated plot, just the knock on effect of ordinary everyday activities spiralling out of control.
You will empathise with Miranda and by the time you reach the conclusion , will be left wondering and thinking about what is real and how it all came about.

3.0 out of 5 stars Part Horror, Part Police Procedural
Difficult to categorise this book. Not really a psychologist thriller, it's part horror story and part police procedural (with the latter taking up most space).
I read it through to the end (which is not a given) albeit by speed reading through some of the police procedural sections.
I quite enjoyed the Miranda character and the "horror" sections of the book were fun to read. The rest of the novel was harder going and the end section made little sense - but that's often true in horror fiction.
Overall, it was worth spending £2.99 on this book and, while I won't read the remainder of the trilogy, I could see myself checking out some of the author's other works
