Mistaken Identity: A Pride & Prejudice Variation (The Misadventures of Darcy & Elizabeth) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 803 ratings

NEW COVER - February 2023

When Fitzwilliam Darcy’s life is threatened, he seeks refuge in Hertfordshire where he meets a woman who looks remarkably like the female who twice shot at him. Why was Elizabeth Bennet trying to kill him? How could he be attracted to her when he should do everything in his power to stay away?

Accidentally mistaking Mr. Darcy for someone else, Elizabeth Bennet determines to have nothing to do with him until she learns that her first impression might have been a mistake. Where she expected arrogance, he was kind. When she anticipated a lie, he proved himself trustworthy. Who was the man behind the name, Fitzwilliam Darcy, and why was she drawn to him despite knowing he was dangerous?

In this Regency romance with a hint of dark mystery written by bestselling author, J Dawn King, the true nature of the characters from Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice are revealed as they search through a complex web of deceit to find hope and lasting love.

Every book in this series is a complete story that can be read in any order.

Joy Dawn King, who also writes Mr. Darcy/Elizabeth stories as Christie Capps, fell in love with Jane Austen's writings in 2012 and discovered the world of fan fiction shortly after. Intrigued by the many possibilities, she began developing her own story for Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet.

At the time she wrote her first novel, "A Father's Sins", she was living high in the Andes Mountains of South America. Joy loved to take an occasional break from the Latin culture and bury herself in reading English literature about her favorite English characters. Joy, and her husband of 37 years, lived next door to their only child, Jennifer, her husband, and twin grandchildren and is a native Oregonian.

In late 2014 the Kings relocated to Oregon where other stories popped into her head. She is typing as fast as she can to keep up.

MR. Fitzwilliam Darcy unwittingly finds himself at the center of a plot to kill him, well, two actually. It starts with a gunshot from the woods on his way to London. To get away from town, he agrees to travel to Hertfordshire to help his "friend" Charles Bingley . There, he encounters the Bennet family. Mr. Bennet is aware of the goings-on of his family and becomes even more involved in guiding and protecting them. Out of necessity, along with help from one Major Gerring who's been tasked by Colonel Fitzwilliam to protect him, these gentlemen must join forces . This mystery within a story had me on the edged of my seat and unwilling to put it down. Hang on tight , " it's going to be a bumpy ride ." Enjoy!

I have read some really good books by this author, but the last two were rather disappointing. The plots were good, even if a little outrageous, but the actual writing and editing was not up to par. Though this one did improve. Definitely not canon P & P, but fun all the same.

Excellently story. A nice original plot. If you buy the premise the rest of the story is believable.

In the end Darcy’s ability to turn the cheek to awful people in his life is somewhat endearing if for no other reason it lends itself to so many ways his life makes for a good story.

From history we see very rich people NOT being easy to taken advantage of. A successful owner and manager of a huge business, Pemberley Estates, should also be able to dodge people taking advantage of him. I certainly would enjoy such a story from this author.

The twists and turns make this a great read. Some characters you know, others are new, and some are not what you thought. I enjoyed the story immensely. The mysteries and intrigue where a great way to experience Elizabeth and Darcy finding their feelings for each other.

I’m a huge fan of J Dawn King and have most of her books in my kindle library. But I have to say that I can’t be as generous as other reviewers about this work. It’s hard to explain why without giving away the plot. Suffice to say that one of the story lines has to do with a plot against Darcy by the Bingley family. My problem was with the character of Bingley in this story which just didn’t work for me. Caroline as the mastermind of an evil plot — no problem. Even Hurst who is always described as indolent, caring only for his food & drink, I could see being roused to action at the thought of losing his easy meal ticket. And Louisa always goes along for the ride. But Bingley, while admittedly a weak-willed character, and in this book given other reasons for an act of desperation, still did not work for me as someone who would actively participate in such a heinous crime. Frankly, I think the story would have worked even better if Bingley had, as usual, been oblivious to the true machinations of his sister. In the end, he still would have lost everything — his fortune, his reputation and Jane, but it would have been more in keeping with what have always been shown to be his true faults — his weakness and inability to take charge of his sister and take control of his life. Of course, the relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth in this book was wonderful as always, particularly his appreciation of her intelligence and strategic skills. And the mistaken identity regarding Elizabeth’s cousin and Wickham’s usual treachery all were well done. But the Bingley family plot was for me where the book went off the rails.

Darcy's being shot at by a woman he doesn't know that looks identical to Miss Elizabeth Bennet who he meets in the Assembly. Is it her or her twin?
The entire story is about greed because everyone seems to want something that they don't have. Mr Collins wants Elizabeth and Longbourne. Wickham wants money and power. Miss Collins wants revenge. Caroline wants Pemberley. Charles wants Georgiana and Darcy's money. Darcy wants Elizabeth. Anne wants a father for her unborn child. Jane wants a good man. Charlotte wants a husband and enough money to keep them comfortable. Mr Bennet wants everyone to stay out of his study so he can read. And Elizabeth just wants to figure out who is killing people!

Treachery, betrayal, and several attempts on taking Darcy's life! Everything designed to get the reader's attention from page one and keep it there until the end. So much skillful layering of plot and characters, P & P readers will forgive this variation is not canon.
Especially love Lizzy's father becoming more involved in his family's lives. Just that one tweak made the plotline spiral in an interesting direction. Read this book early in the day or you will read late into the night. In my case, it was early morning.

Having been shot at several times, Darcy is on edge. Colonel Fitzwilliam helps him remember key details, thus identifying the shooter was a dark haired woman. When Darcy escapes London to visit his friend Charles Bingley's estate in Hertfordshire, he is shocked to meet the would be assassin at a local assembly.

This is a wonderfully written story, filled with cases of mistaken identity (hence the book title), false accusations, murder and betrayal. Elizabeth is in full Nancy Drew mode, finding crucial pieces of evidence to ensure an innocent man is not wrongly convicted of murder. Darcy and Elizabeth working together is a sight to behold. And the betrayal, when the bad guy is revealed, is a truly great twist.

Would actually have given more than 5 stars if it was possible 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Very gripping story right until the end, even though the reader learns rather early in the book who the baddies are. I couldn't put down this book and had to read it in one go.

It started out quite well and the sample was enough to make me want to read it but it sort of went downhill thereafter.

It was OK but it won’t get read again.

Someone wants Darcy dead and she looks just like Elizabeth. When murders occur in Meryton, Darcy is accused and confined. Confident in his innocence, Elizabeth works to try and figure out who did the deeds.

We come to learn the vicious plot against Darcy fairly early, so what follows kind of made the story fizzle out a little for me. Also, I didn’t like this Bingley portrayal very much at all.

Overall, however, I consider it a good read which I enjoyed.
