Mixing It Up Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 76 ratings

Born with a silver spoon in her mouth, Manhattan upper-cruster Cecily Sinclair now uses that pricey utensil to dish up fancy French fare on her cooking show, Serving Romance. When there’s an executive shake-up at the network, she’s not worried. Not much anyway. Her show’s a hit after all. Why would the new CEO want to mess with success?

The driving force behind several buzzed-about networks, Devlin Hayes is considered to be a wunderkind in the television industry. Although his plans to rebrand CuisineTV and make Serving Romance more Millennial-friendly don’t thrill Cecily, her charming, blue-eyed boss is a hard man to say “no” to and she really wants to keep her job—even if that means sharing screen time with a loathsome blast from her past.

Mercurial Italian chef Dante Marchetti a.k.a. “Il Duce” was once Cecily’s boss, and she has the PTSD to prove it. Now the owner of one of the hottest restaurants in town, Dante’s egomania knows no bounds and his constant attempts to provoke and upstage Cecily make her want to conk him on the head with a sauté pan. She thinks they’re toxic together, but viewers love their chemistry and clamor for more.

As Cecily battles to maintain the integrity of her show, she finds herself scheming and manipulating right along with Dante and Devlin. Is she fighting a lost cause? Does she really belong on TV, or would her culinary talent be better served elsewhere? And could one of the men who makes Cecily’s blood boil ignite a passion in her for something other than food?

About the Author

An avid reader and writer, Tracie Banister has been scribbling stories since she was a child, most of them featuring feisty heroines with complicated love lives like her favorite fictional protagonist Scarlett O'Hara. Her work was first seen on the stage of her elementary school, where her 4th grade class performed an original holiday play she penned. (Like all good divas-in-the-making, she also starred in and tried to direct the production.)

Tracie's dreams of authorial success were put on the backburner when she reached adulthood and discovered that she needed a "real" job in order to pay her bills. Her career as personal assistant to a local entrepreneur lasted for 12 years. When it ended, she decided to follow her bliss and dedicate herself to writing full-time.
Mixing It Up is her fourth Chick Lit release, and in it Tracie finally got to live out her fantasy of being a Cordon Bleu-trained chef.

Manhattanite Cecily Sinclair is the host of cooking show Serving Romance where she creates gourmet French cuisine. When new CEO Devlin Hayes takes over CuisineTV with plans to rebrand the network, Cecily finds out that her show is going to change drastically, including the addition of Cecily’s former nightmare of a boss, Italian chef Dante Marchetti. Despite constantly being at odds, viewers love their chemistry together, much to Cecily's dismay. But Cecily is determined to maintain her reputation and the integrity of her show, which means getting a step ahead of Dante and Devlin with her own schemes. As she tries to figure out if she's really meant for TV or if she should take a new path, she finds herself embroiled in romantic drama with both men who drive her crazy.

Mixing It Up is a fast-paced, well-written novel that will have readers guessing until the very end. Cecily is determined to control all aspects of her life. The more curveballs that are thrown her way, the more headstrong she becomes. She is definitely one of the strongest Chick Lit heroines, but her stubbornness gets her into some trouble. So, it’s a good thing Cecily has caring friends to help her relax a bit. The dynamic between Cecily and her best friend/cousin, Dina, is fun to read because they are so different, but they balance each other out so well at all the right times. For most of the book, it’s unclear who Cecily will end up with romantically. She has chemistry with Dante and Devlin, which makes things interesting. Readers will likely root for both men at different times during the book, as well as be frustrated by both. With Cecily’s love life unclear, there’s enough work drama and family drama to keep the story moving along.

The best aspect of Mixing It Up is the author’s writing style, which is so natural and effortless, making it an easy yet compelling read. Cecily’s passion for food jumps off the pages thanks to the author’s exquisitely detailed culinary descriptions. Foodies and Chick Lit fans are sure to enjoy this entertaining read that excels in gastronomy, humor, and romance. Highly recommended!

Mixing It Up has to be one of the best books I've read this year.  Tracie's ability to write realistic, complex characters and situations puts this book in the highest class of chick-lit and rom-com.  I have to admit, it took me several times before I could settle down with this book.  This is not a fast, happy-go-lucky read.  No, this book is like watching a full-fledged, ongoing, well-written TV series: The _Entire_ Season!  Tracie Banister writes some amazing literary meat here.  Full-fledged characters and ongoing, and unpredictable well-written drama.  What I most enjoyed about this book was the unerring focus on the main character, Cecily, and her challenging, unexpected roll-with-the-punches career.  I found myself rooting for Cecily and personally invested in Cecily's successes and failures all throughout this book.  Tracie Banister creates some unforgettable characters and completely envelopes you in this world she's created and makes you wish it was a real show! *happy sigh*  What I most likely about this book is that the romance is an aside rather than the main focus.  This allows Cecily's character to fully blossom and shine, rather than as a reflex or in response to the (romantic) influence of a man, although she meets many masculine-given career challenges head on!  I admire Cecily's pluck, and the devious, mischievousness of her foil in Dante, is pure comic genius.  My one caveat, is I found the ending to be a little too soon!  I'd love to have had an epilogue, but perhaps a sequel will be forthcoming *hint, hint, hope, hope*.  If you like high quality, in depth books, this one is for you!  For a speed reader like myself, this one took me three wonderful evenings!  And while you're at it, enjoy her In Need of Therapy and also Blame It On the Fame books, two other #5Stars reads!  Enjoy!  :)

A new book by Tracie Banister is always a cause for celebration and I'm happy to say this book is an absolute must-read!
I've enjoyed all of Tracie's books, but this one might be my favorite.

MIXING IT UP has interesting characters, hilarious dialogue, and food descriptions that made me crave whatever heroine Cecily was cooking/baking/eating at the time. She's a real foodie and her passion for food is infectious. Even though she comes from money (and lots of it) Cecily is not a spoiled brat and that's what I loved about her and what made her so relatable. She's not afraid to fight for what she believes in..., which leads to some seriously hilarious interactions with leading men Dante and Devlin.

Tracie Banister also creates a fabulous cast of supporting characters and they each bring something to the story.
I was invested in Cecily's journey from start to finish and highly recommend this book!

Tracie Banister has cooked up (yes, I went there) a wonderfully funny, clever, and totally enjoyable rom com romp with this, her latest title. Her sharp wit and fabulous, complicated characters virtually leap off the page. You cannot separate this book and New York City. The main character, Cecily, is a total WASP, born with an entire drawer of silver spoons in her mouth. But that doesn't stop her being driven and career-minded, and I could tell Tracie Banister had a lot of fun with her. Although she was incredibly uptight, I couldn't help but like her, right down to her twinset and pearls. This is chick lit with a serious brain on its shoulders. Another great read from Tracie Bannister!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Mixing it Up" a Glorious Concoction

Tracie Banister could write the phone book, and it would be utterly fascinating, full of wit, humor, warmth and comedy. Fortunately, "Mixing it Up" is not the phone book: Instead, this time Tracie Banister expertly takes us into the fascinating and frightening world of TV cooking shows, complete with an ambitious heroine, a too-good-to-be-true male boss and an egomaniacal rival that heroine Cecily Hayes is forced to pair up with.

At first glance, Cecily has it all: A rich family, beauty, youth and considerable culinary talent. Along with that comes shrewdness, a caustic wit and just enough vulnerability to make her dangerous to herself--plus her family has high expectations and a Borgia stranglehold on her loyalties. Romance-wise, she has two potential conquests to choose from, and a seemingly insoluble career problem. The mayhem she causes and experiences while negotiating these tricky shoals is thoroughly entertaining, and kept me reading through the night.

Okay so I’m not going to bore you again with how rubbish I am at cooking, and how much food and baking and cooking stories and blogs make me so so happy. As a result when I saw this I was beyond thrilled, and, knowing Tracie Banister’s impeccible style and sophistication in terms of chick lit made me hit pre order straight away. It is beyond regretful that it’s taken me this long to get to the review, especially as I had read Ms. Banister’s ‘In Need Of Therapy’ (read review here) and loved it. No more that here, I often find reading blogs and blogging tears you away from the books you started the blog for, sparkling treats that pull you out of reading ruts, and this is one of those books.
We are set up with a bang into the world of tv cooking and this, put with that great cover, placed me firmly there, at Cuisine tv with Cecily Sinclair, whose identity is her cookery show Serving Romance. Of course in tv land nothing stays the same for long enough and, when a shake up takes place in the studios, Cecily’s show gains a guest host. I was excited that I heard Dante was difficult to work with, and settled into a read that beyond flew by.

The dialogue in this book (I won’t say between who!), when snippy, was so funny, and when loaded, was electric. The romance was of the fluttery yet hot type, the comedy sparkling, and the characters perfection. I actually learned from the food talk, and came away from the book feeling like I do when I get to watch QI, satisfied and that little bit more knowledgeable. All in all this is definitely a book that fans of sophisticated, sparkly, bright, intelligent romance will love, as I did.

A Wonderfully Witty, Swoon-worthy Page Turner

Mixing It Up is by far my favourite romantic comedy of the year! From loveable quirky side characters to a storyline that surprises and delights to the sizzling romance between Cecily and Devlin, this fun, fast-paced tale will have you up all night reading. Be warned—the vivid descriptions of all of Cecily’s culinary creations will have your mouth watering, so make sure your pantry is stocked with all things sweet and savoury (just like this book!). I simply can’t wait to dig into my next read by Ms. Banister.

This book is absolutely amazing and it had me absorbed from start to finish. Its addictive, sassy, romantic, fast-paced and at times comic. The book is about food, with classy, high society Cecily Sinclair having her own successful cookery show. That's until a new CEO appears on the scene, the rather dashing, blue eyed wonder boy Devlin Hayes who has his own ideas about the show and spices it up by introducing Cecily's one time arch enemy in to the equation , Dante Marchetti. What results is lots of bickering, sauciness and fun, and plenty of tasty food cooked up.

I absolutely loved the ending and the surprise romantic hero Cecily ends up with. I would put this book down as one of my favourite Tracie Banister books and hope to read many more like it.
