Modified: Book One in the Manipulated Series Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 422 ratings

What if the sky was deadly?

Fin has never stepped foot on the irradiated surface of the Earth. Working the mines, deep below, has been the only life she's ever known. The underground is nothing more than an existence of sweat and monotony in service to the Enhanced Human Coalition—the overlords from above.

It’s simple, you serve the EHC up top, or you starve to death.

But in a stroke of luck, Fin stubbles upon a piece of tech that increases strength, intelligence, and allows adaptation to the surface's harsh conditions. Stealing this device sends the underground into chaos.

Now she’s triggered a manhunt and is on the run for not only her crimes… but her new abilities. To protect herself and the only family she’s ever known, Fin is forced to flee with her loyal best friends and a handsome stranger who unluckily gets caught in the crossfire.

There’s only one problem, they’re driven to the most dangerous place possible… aboveground.

Can she save an unjust world broken in two?

What a fantastic start to a brand new series! Modified is a gripping sci-fi dystopian thriller. I love reading dystopian stories and trying a new author is always risky, but I was not disappointed. From the beginning you are drawn in with interesting characters and the non-stop action ensures you will be reading straight to the end. Fans of the Maze Runner & Virals series will want to try this book out. While Modified is written for teens, I feel adults will enjoy this story as well.

Seventeen-year old Fin is a dweller, born and raised in a parentless underground cavern called the Oven. When she is old enough to work she is thrown into the mining shafts to work until she dies. In this futuristic Earth the world has been dismantled and made uninhabitable by extreme radiation. Only the genetically modified are allowed above, for these are the people who have wealth and status. When Fin and her friends stumble upon a hidden device that can enhance abilities and adapt the dwellers to the Earth’s surface, they find themselves on the run from the government who want their technology back. They soon find members of a resistance who hope to start a revolution. Fin and her friends are stuck far from home, but with a few new friends, on a mission to save the world.

I received an ARC at no cost from the author and voluntarily reviewed it. All my opinions and thoughts are in no way influenced by this.

Authors never fail to amaze me with their imaginations. The same plots are approached with such an infinite variety of detail. Once again our heroine sets out to save the world, yet in spite of a very familiar plot the story is entertaining. Young adult girls will probably enjoy it most.

This book took a while to get into initially. I thought that it picked up about half way through. There was no romance or chemistry between the characters so I was not really invested in the outcome.

This is a book that will grab you from the first page and draw you in until the very end. Very impressive writing for a debut novel and author. Well done, Harper North!

I was thrilled when I was contacted to read this book as an ARC. It did not disappoint. I am one of 'those' readers that has to be grabbed from the first page in order to stick with a book. This novel does just that and more. I loved both the character and world building throughout the book.

I definitely recommend to readers who are fans of "The Maze Runner" and other books in this genre.

Modified is the first book and just the beginning of an amazing series that I look forward to reading.

Thank you for the advanced read and for a book that grabbed me from page one!

I think this quote quite accurately describes "Modified": "I came to the surface to save a little girl, nothing more. Now it seems I've jumpstarted a revolution."

I absolutely loved the characters that Harper has created in this dystopian future of Earth. The book gave me a "Hunger Games" vibe, but remained unique in plot and character development. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series! This is definitely one of my new favorite authors. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary advance copy of the book.
