Monstrous Intent (Mischief and Monsters Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 2,667 ratings

Declan
It’s really hard to pretend like life is normal when you’re staring a monster in the eyes, though he’s both tempting and irritating in his human form. I put my days as a hunter behind me, unable to cope with the death and pain anymore, to become an upstanding citizen and for what? To assist Lake, a man who
claims he’s not a monster but keeps talking about me like I’m edible and–even worse–wants to woo me? Between my old organization trying to pull me in and Lake proving that things aren’t quite what they seem, I’m dragged back into this world of fighting the things that humans fear the most.

Lake
The human is exquisite. The first moment he told me he was going to hunt me down, I felt my heart burst. He’s beautiful, sassy, angry, and going to be mine (even if he thinks he can refuse my charms). But what Declan doesn’t know about me is that there’s a reason I’m hiding as a human among monster hunters. And while he definitely doesn’t know why, he’s willing to work with me because the people around us strangely want Declan and me dead at the end of this (I mean, who would want to kill us? We’re amazing).
But honestly… what’s more fun than dragging a hunter off to the dark side?

Warning: This is a chaotic monster and a chaotic human. Stuff happens. People die (but they were bad, so it doesn’t matter, right?) and there’s plenty of humor alongside a budding romance.

Omg! Alice Winters has done it again! This is one of the sassiest, quirkiest, funniest, grumpy vs sunshine, romantic paranormal adventure ever - if, you know, the grumpy MC was a human monster hunter and the sunshine MC was ... well, not human! Declan wins the gold medal for most sarcastic and generally curmudgeonly MC ever, while Lake is the most hilarious and generally "not what he seems" MC ever! The two are obviously a match made in ... well, somewhere! 😄 Add in a kick-ass plot, oodles of action (ie. gunfire and running from bad monsters that might be related to Lake), a sweetly confused ex-coworker/elementary school teacher, the cutest bundle of monster "not kitty" named Mittens, a fish called Sir Reginald - who apparently is an adrenaline junkie, kitchen shears used in extremely unhygenical ways, more gunfire and running, and ... Well, you get the picture! This is 100% a "you HAVE to read this book" book and I can not recommend it more strongly! 100* stars! I'm hoping that the author continues the adventures with this band of misfit characters and side characters and Mittens! I want more! And, as someone else already coined the phrase - Team Mittens! 😁

I'm just in awe of the inner workings of Alice Winters mind, truly. I don't know how she's able to continuously come up with these characters and stories, but I hope she plans to write for a very long time, because I cannot get enough of them!

Monstrous Intent introduces us to Declan and Lake, another delightfully engaging Alice Winters duo. Hunter and Monster, these two butt heads when Declan's old boss attempts to pull him back into a world he hoped to leave behind forever. What ensues is a fun, slightly stressful, and highly entertaining read.

I enjoyed this story a lot. It's not quite as over the top (and I say that with love!) as some of Ms. Winters other books, but it will definitely make you laugh out loud. And give you just a little bit of anxiety as Declan and Lake join forces to fight the monsters.
Lake sure does gives Leland and Felix a run for their money- he will keep you on your toes. Poor Declan, he didn't know what to do with him! The romance was more on the slow burn side, as Declan fought against everything that was being thrown at him, particularly his feelings when it came to Lake. These two are about as opposite as you can get, but they needed each other and I really loved seeing their relationship develop.

This story is completely resolved at the end, so I'm curious to see where we go next!

Oh how I adored Declan and Lake! First let me just say PNR, shifter books are not my normal go-to read. But if Alice Winters writes it I'm going to read it, and I am so glad I did! This had everything I love about her books. Mystery, suspense, action, and humor, so much humor. Lake is right up there with Leland as her funniest character. The things that came out of his mouth had me rolling with laughter. It was only a matter of time before he won Declan's trust and his heart. The pace is pretty quick throughout as Declan and Lake fight for their lives, but it slows down at points too as they spend time together and grow closer. It hit the perfect balance between all the elements and was just such an enjoyable read! We end in a good place but with the door open for so much more for these two. I cannot wait!

Alice Winters is one of my favorite authors and this story is even better than I anticipated. I always want more of the characters she has written in the past, but then she creates a new world with new characters, and I fall in love all over again. Lake and Declan are fantastic. Declan is a former hunter of monsters turned school teacher. Lake works for the organization that Declan came from. Declan wants nothing to do with Lake because he doesn't want to get dragged back into that world again. As Lake and Declan learn that not everything is as it seems in the fight between monsters and humans, they become allies, and despite Declan's protests, they become even more to each other. Alice has a gift for showing that not every monster is a bad guy, and not every so-called good guy is actually good. The pets make the story even better. Definitely a 5 star read.

I have read several books by Alice Winters and enjoyed most of them. She is usually very good with funny/flirty dialog between the main characters and the depiction of the wild, energetic but endearing men-child. Unfortunately, in this book she tried to challenge herself and test the limits of what her readers would accept and I, for one, could not cross the line. This resulted in the fact that I could never buy the sexual tension and, much less, the romance between the main characters. It was basically as if you met Hannibal , you knew who he was and what he was capable, and he leered at you licking his lips and calling you delicious. Would you think that is sexy? If you think so, then you will enjoy this book. To me, it was creepy and, after a while, boring.

I picked up this book when I was in a bit of a reading slump hoping it would be funny. And it absolutely is, I was suckered in from the very start .

Lake is a maybe monster who spends a lot of his time explaining how delicious Declan is and Declan is an extremely cynical monster hunter who just wants to live a normal life.

I would definitely recommend if you want a weirdly sweet, low angst and really hilarious read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The three f's
Reviewed in Canada on June 22, 2023
This world has monsters in it, ones that hunt and eat people for food and for sport. Declan just so happens to be a monster hunter.....except he's not. He lives a normal life and he totally loves it. Loves all of it, couldn't be more normal, doesn't want to go back. But his old coworkers are coming around saying he has to come back and they bring with them a monster who looks completely human, one they don't seem to realize is a monster. Everything is getting thrown into chaos and it looks like Declan doesn't have a choice about coming along.
Lake came over to the humans a while back to hide but everything is just so boring. That is until he meets a human who sees what he is even when he is doing nothing to give himself away. Declan is just so intriguing and dragging him into it all seems fun at first, and maybe even vital to his survival as things progress. Because Lake's past is coming knocking as well and his has a bit more bite.

A good build, with Declan not standing down about staying out of the monster world and Lake not revealing what he is, there are some major factors that come and push at these two men but never in the direction you expect. There is some classic Winters snark and sarcasm, a bit from both of the characters, and plenty of wild rides with guns and a chance of not walking away. For a world of monsters even more is revealed to exist and there are still some secrets that haven't been told and could change it all. Great read and promising series opener!
