An enquiry agent seeking her first case.

She’s been given a list of instructions: to wear red, to find the mysterious gentleman amongst the crowd, with no clue to his identity. But if, by God’s good grace, she finds the man, she must go through a series of tests before he agrees to hire her.

A man on a mission.

Eli Hunter needs a woman who can act her way onto any Covent Garden stage. He needs a woman with steely determination and a cunning mind. A woman who can help him recover a stolen artefact owned by a secret society. But he encounters a problem. The only enquiry agent available stirs a passion that could soften the hardest heart—a terrifying prospect for a man who’s survived the worst kind of betrayal.

Can Rachel and Eli work together and suppress their obvious attraction?

When thrown in the midsts of danger, will they find something infinitely more precious than a stolen artefact?

As a lover of history, Adele stumbled on her first historical romance novel after being lured by a title similar to a Shakespeare play. Consequently, she discovered a passion for the Regency era, for bucks in breeches and illicit midnight liaisons.

Adele lives in Shropshire. She spends her time writing, watching period dramas and wandering around stately homes looking for a time portal back to the 19th century.

MORE THAN A MASQUERADE, Adele Clee's second book in her Ladies of the Order series, is an absolute delight for a reader desiring an amazing love story as well as a reader who loves to solve mysteries. In MORE THAN A MASQUERADE, Adele Clee has written not one, but three individual mysteries that will leave you pondering who the perpetrators are and their reasons for their heinous actions. The villains are truly evil‒ ones quite deserving their eventual just rewards.

Adele Clee's great skills as a writer shine throughout the story with heartfelt emotions‒ from friendship and desire to genuine love, countered with doubt, suspicion and grave fear as the mysteries turn deadly. All three mysteries are explained quite well with no cliffhanger.

I enjoyed seeing several characters from former books, but I have to say I absolutely loved Rachel and Eli!! Adele Clee outdid herself with the main characters, especially the heroine. After reading all the HORRENDOUS things Rachel went through, I think she is the strongest, bravest heroine that I've read in a very long time. Yet even with her being such a strong character, she is very feminine, compassionate and loving‒ a super heroine!

Eli is a great hero. Although he is wealthy and part of society, he is not a charming rogue in any way. Due to being horribly betrayed in the past, Eli's personality is cold and forbidding but realizing why he is that way is part of his initial appeal. All the changes he goes through make him all the more rewarding to read about. He truly comes through in heroic fashion at the end.

Rachel and Eli meet as strangers to solve a mystery. In each other, they find their soulmate and love of a lifetime.

If I could give this book more than five stars, I would. It is DEFINITELY THAT GOOD!

If you want to read a more detailed review, please continue. But beware, there are SPOILERS.

Rachel Gambit, becomes a new enquiry agent when Mr. Daventry finds her in a life-threatening situation and invites her to join the Ladies of the Order. By becoming a successful enquiry agent, she can help others in urgent need of aid such as she has known.

Eli Hunter is in need of a female enquiry agent to help him solve a case of theft. Before he agrees to hire Rachel, she must pass tests of her mental and physical abilities. Despite Eli's initial stubbornness to admit she is right for the job, when she demonstrates she is capable, he grudgingly approves.

Eli takes Rachel from London to a private site known only to him and the (all male) members of a secret organization. On the way, he explains that he'll need her help to discover who has stolen a secret artifact from the organization, retrieve it and prove whether or not there is a traitor among them. Since it is the Regency period in England, when most men feel that a woman's only acceptable place is in the home as an obedient wife, and Eli cannot divulge Rachel's true reason for being there, she truly has her work cut out for her in helping Eli solve the mystery.

As Rachel and Eli's affections grow for each other while they work together to solve the mystery of the missing artifact, they discover two other mysteries involving deceit, stolen jewels and murder. The more information they uncover, they realize all three mysteries are interconnected in some way. Danger and threats of harm escalate as Eli and Rachel get closer to discovering the truth behind the three connected mysteries. Imminent danger brings Eli and Rachel to admit and act on their feelings for each other.

In the end, a scene "revealing all" blazes across the pages! The scene exposing the villains and their crimes is so surprising, you'll be blown away by all it reveals. I admit I was so caught up in the scene that I never saw an unexpected shock coming. Just a hint‒ at this point you may want to have a box of tissues handy. Hold on to your heart!

All good romances end with a happily ever after, but EXCELLENT romances, such as Rachel and Eli's, take you on an emotionally spiraling, nail-biting, heart-stopping roller coaster ride before you reach that glorious ending.

I highly recommend MORE THAN A MASQUERADE for such a fantastic reading experience! Just make sure you're buckled in tight and keep your hands inside the car. Your heart will thank you later.

    Rating: 4.5 Stars

Once again Ms. Clee has written an outstanding story. Filled with mystery and romance, this book had everything I love and almost nothing I didn't. The romance itself was so stunning it took my breath away at times. Some of the things these two say to each were truly lovely too. Their chemistry and connection was that of soul mates and beyond beautiful. Even their sex scenes (two that I can recall) which were definitely steamy, were also emotional encounters and a culmination of their love.

As for the mystery there were multiple cases that had to be solved. Not only that of who is betraying a group committed to helping those less fortunate (Themis) but that of a boy accused of murdering his stepfather and a maid accused of theft. There was also a betrayal that Eli has to overcome and a deep seated fear that Rachel has to deal with. Together I had no doubt these two could conquer the world though and witnessing their faith and trust in each other was deeply moving to me.

If I had one problem with this story it's that I don't think everyone was held to account for their crimes. For example, there is a certain individual who was more than willing to watch an innocent young woman be hanged and who basically gets to live happily ever after. That didn't sit well with me but was overall the only issue I had in an otherwise unforgettable, fast paced and compelling read. I just adored Eli and Rachel so much and loved every moment I spent with them on their amazing journey.

I'd also like to note that although this is the second in "The Ladies of the Order" series, which is a spinoff of the "Gentlemen of the Order" it can easily stand alone. I personally haven't read any of the gentlemen's books but definitely plan to go back and do just that at some point. Ms. Clee is fast becoming one of my favorite authors though and hasn't disappointed me yet. She's a true talent so if you haven't read one of her stories I'd highly recommend you look her up and find one that interests you.

Rachel Gambit is a new private investigator for Ladies of the Order, waiting to interview for her first case. Eli Hunter is seeking an investigator to help him locate a missing artifact and to discover a traitor in his organization. He has no intention of hiring a woman. But she passes all his “tests” and begins to work with him. During their meetings they develop feelings for one another. It’s a great mixture of romance, healing, and mystery. The characters are interesting and the story is well written.
I enjoyed the Audible narrator a lot. Her male voices are very good and the hero’s voice is strong and sensual.

I enjoyed this book so much more than the first one. I loved Eli and Rachel together from the very beginning. They were funny, and their wittiness with one another was entertaining. They had complete trust in each other and helped each other through their dark pasts. This was a sweet love story. Lucius D is definitely a great matchmaker. I can’t wait to see what is in store for Eliza.

Rachel has finally been given her first case with the Order, as long as she can pass the mysterious client’s test. Eli is tempted to fail Rachel because of his attraction to her, but he does need her help to uncover a traitor.

I enjoyed this book. I did feel that the relationship progressed a little too quickly. Eli begins as this aloof mysterious man who is determined to be alone, but he drops it almost immediately and instantly falls in love with Rachel. It was too fast an about-turn, rather than a gradual progression, which would have been more believable. But, other than that, it was a really good book, and I’m looking forward to the next in the series.

I was disappointed with this one. The characters were well rounded and likeable and the adventure interesting. I liked that the mystery had me guessing from the start but it all felt very rushed. If the whole thing was a chapter or so longer it could have been better. Some places are a bit confusing as too much was crammed in. The ending was lovely. The rest could improve.

Hunter was part of the group of men who a helped prove guilt or innocent of people imprisoned. He needed a Lady to help find out the truth. This was Rachel's first mission she was told she would be given some tests to see if she was capable.

Hunter was the one testing her capability he did not particularly like women he had been betrayed by his fiancee on their wedding day so was not happy to have a women as a partner.
