The Music of Us: WWII love story (Still Life with Memories) Hardcover – February 16, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
Lenny goes as far back as the moment he met Natasha during WWII, when he was a wounded warrior and she—a star, brilliant yet illusive. Natasha was a riddle to him then, and to this day, with all the changes she has gone through, she still is.
“Digging into the past, mining its moments, trying to piece them together this way and that, dusting off each memory of Natasha, of how we were, the highs and lows of the music of us, to find out where the problem may have started?”
To their son, Ben, that may seem like an exercise in futility. For Lenny, it is a necessary process of discovery, one that is as tormenting as it is delightful. He often wonders: can we ever understand, truly understand each other—soldier and musician, man and woman, one heart and another? Will we ever again dance together to the same beat? Is there a point where we may still touch?
★★★★★ “The author's own passion draws you in, makes you feel every wrench of what the characters feel. This powerful, poignant story is absolutely mesmerizing."This is a WWII romance going back and forth between England to the US, touching upon the plight of war brides. It is a wounded warrior romance, which can be read as a standalone novel as well as part of one of family sagas best sellers. Still Life with Memories is a family saga series tinged with family saga romance, fraught with marital issues, and wrapped with a second chance at love.

Review
- "Words can be melodic, and author Uvi Poznansky's book at times reads like a symphony. This is the music of love, elegantly written with an essence of bittersweet romance. It is a celebration of the wonderful feelings people experience during the early days of getting to know each other, written in the heartbreak and shadows of later years." - A. Reader, TOP 100 REVIEWER
- "A powerful and poignant novel that will grip at your heart strings ... a love story that invites the reader into a romance." - Serenity, HALL OF FAME, TOP 10 REVIEWER
- "Uvi touches us with a tenderness that unites her skill as a writer with her gifts as a visual artist and once swept into her fictional account of the 'us' of this book the story will long be remembered." - Grady Harp, HALL OF FAME, TOP 100 REVIEWER
- "Masterfully written, this is one of those reads that will stick with you by evoking emotion and causing an introspective contemplation" - Dennis Waller, Top 500 Reviewer
- "Her ability to create a dreamlike atmosphere within her tale is spellbinding. She touches my soul with her words." - Dii, Top 500 Reviewer
- "The atmosphere of the 1940s is beautifully portrayed, and on a secondary level only to the (mostly) unrequited love story, it was my next treasured experience while reading this book. I loved the sounds and sights of the era, the music, the cars, and the lifestyles so well depicted. It was a fascinating dip into the life of those dynamic times." - Aaron Paul Lazar, Author
- "But the real story is the foundation of love and commitment Lenny has for his wife years later when, at a young age, she starts to exhibit clear signs of Early Onset Alzheimer's! Alzheimer's is a brutal, despicable disease for anyone at any age, but as a woman in the middle of life, it's especially tragic!" - Elaine C Pereira, Author
- ""The Music of Us" is a wonderful love story from the first sentence until the very last. It touched my heart." - Cary Allen Stone, Author
- "That generation has been called the Greatest Generation for the sacrifices they made and their amazing accomplishments in later years. If you enjoy historical fiction with a touch of romance. If you enjoy believable, complex characters, this is a book for you." - Richard L. Weatherly, Author
- "Oh what gorgeous writing. This is a deeply moving story of love, of World War II and rationing and the music of that era... The author's own passion draws you in, makes you feel every wrench of what the characters feel. This powerful, poignant story is absolutely mesmerizing." - J.A. Schneider, Author
- "What an amazing story! I have heard of Uvi Poznansky, but I had not previously read her work. Wonderful! Her writing is as beautiful and lyrical and sad as the story she lays out, that of a husband trying to reconnect with the love of his life... This is a deep romance and a true love story, as opposed to so much shallow trivia that's labeled romance. Elegant, classic, and classy, The Music of Us is a top of the line read. " - Sandy Nathan, Author, Vine Voice
- "Lyrical, musical, and hauntingly genuine, told in a voice that ages convincingly and loves completely, The Music Of Us lingers beautifully in the mind, long after the story's told, and is a truly great read." - Sheila Deeth, Author, Top Amazon Reviewer, Vine Voice
- "Her ability to create a dreamlike atmosphere within her tale is spellbinding. She touches my soul with her words." - Dii, Top 500 Reviewer

- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2022While reading The Music of Us: A WWII Story, written by Uvi Poznansky, I couldn’t help but wonder if Beethoven’s’ Fifth was the muse that fostered the love between Lenny and his Natasha, the piano player extraordinaire. Will the pianist who learned the beauty of classical music from her deceased father who fears she'll develop Early Onset Alzheimer’s as he did suffer from it, too? Wonder also if the Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy would overshadow her number?
Despite that, did she perform her best when a young man steps out of the venue’s line and heads backstage out of avid curiosity?
Yes. Hence came God Bless America, but I digress.
I adore how Ms. Poznansky constructs such alluring sentences and how so many of them stand out in this incredibly captivating story – Oh! One quote that has stayed with me is, “The memory is a liar.” Shared by the character Natasha as she confides her grief and fears regarding her own future to Lenny, a young man who’s in the military and just happened to be on the stage clowning around as he recovers from a wound, initially hoping to see Betty Grable, and that’s where I stop – you know, to avoid those inevitable spoilers….
This story unfolds in two points of view – Lenny’s and Natasha’s, plus also including Lenny’s recounting of dialogue spoken from Natasha, as he viewed it, and the driving force, in my humble opinion, of much of the story.
An example: When Lenny is overseas, he’s going through a rough patch – you’ll have to read the story to find out what it is, but - the situation worsens, and he asks to be granted emergency leave to return home. His commanding officers approve it, provided he accepts a mission of a highly respected nature, not to mention emotional import. The emotional portion of the sequences had me in tears because that’s how I respond to exceptional writing. Maybe the scene sparked a personal memory, which reading a story by any outstanding author is wont to do, because of the way the words are presented and give rise to the touching factors when a reader is deeply invested in such a poignant read.
Meanwhile, a reunion is in the works while Lenny is home dealing with his sad circumstances - to his amazement, and mine, too. Although this part of the story is fraught with misunderstanding and bumbling errors that could conceivably sabotage the budding romance with his pianist Natasha, true love does run smooth, if only temporarily, and that’s all I will say about that – because the war continues on, and Lenny has to return to it… this is where I zip it. Read the book, you know you want to.
There were also sweet lessons to be learned in this story, too, and gentle reminders. Natasha taught me about ‘spirals’, a cool but practical way to arrange flowers in a vase. Lenny, while out on his first date with Natasha, jogged my memory of the pleasures of creamy tomato soup with cheddar toast until, groaning with hunger pangs, I made the food, and continued to read.
These two characters were innocent souls beginning love’s journey at a time before I was born – so through the author’s prose, I was able to visualize the streets of New York, the orchestra seats at Carnegie Hall, the town of London after it was bombed, and Scotland where Lenny learned how to become a soldier.
As the notes of The Music of Us drew to a close, I realized the journey of Natasha and Lenny had only begun in this tale, and because this sweet, realistic, and engaging tale had already etched a place in my heart, it is only fair I get acquainted with these characters, their son Ben, and perhaps Natasha’s father because I’ve become smitten and need to learn more. There are more stories in this series to be enjoyed.
Five golden stars awarded to Ms. Poznansky, for moving me to tears, increasing my respectful admiration of an author I’ve always enjoyed reading, and for allowing me to savor every phrase she used to move this story, ones I privately wished I’d thought of for myself. Bravo!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2023While the story is well written, I could never fully get into reading every word. For those into true romanticism, music and poetry, this is a great book.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2016"The Music of Us" is the third installment of Uvi Poznansky's series, "Still Life With Memories." The first two volumes were originally released as one book and told the story of Ben, Lenny (Ben's father), and Anita, Lenny's much younger new wife. In that book, Natasha was Lenny's ex-wife and was institutionalized for early-onset Alzheimer's. As I remember, her piano was actually more prominent in the story than she was, but her spirit was always present in a shadowy, mysterious way. "The Music of Us" begins in the early 1970's and looks back at the story of Lenny's and Natasha's meeting, early relationship, and eventual marriage; the bulk of the story is about their courtship. Natasha was a young concert pianist who met Lenny when she performed for the troops on the base where he was stationed during WWII. "The Music of Us" is told from Lenny's point of view, an interesting contrast to the earlier book which was told with two different voices and took place many years later when Ben (Lenny and Natasha's son) was an adult. In many ways, it's the story of a difficult but somewhat less complicated time when heartfelt letters were exchanged and it was often weeks or even months between communications. It's a good story and well-told. I would expect that the next volume will be told from Natasha's point of view, and I look forward to getting to know her better.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2018Award-winning author, poet and artist Uvi Poznansky weaves an outstanding and noteworthy World War II love story with entrancing twists and turns that will easily captivate the reader’s attention from the beginning. The author paints an emotional, touching and bittersweet romance story in a very vivid and convincing way. In addition, the characters are drawn with great credibility and integrity.
The story had every element a good story should have. An exciting plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well-illustrated scenes that make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that’s something I really look for in a good book.
It’s a captivating and commendable read that had me engrossed from the beginning. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows extraordinary skill when it comes to storytelling. There are plenty of attention-grabbing moments in this page turner that will take the reader on a truly mesmerizing journey!
I’m a big fan of Uvi so any ink that flows from her pen comes highly recommended from me. This work, The Music of Us, is of course, no exception. It’s one of those books that come along occasionally that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader. A well-deserved 5 stars and a highly recommended read.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2019The first half of the book was wonderful -- the language and images were elegantly written and I was enjoying the historical aspects of the story. But then it was if the author grew tired of the story before the reader. It just felt rushed. In my opinion, the book could have used several more chapters talking about how they survived in the war and showing their relationship growing before returning to the present day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flows Like Silk
If you've ever read anything by Uvi Poznansky before now, you'd be familiar with her wisdom and often precise insight. If not, you will learn that this author has a mesmerizing talent in both her novels, blogs, interviews and articles, for observing the intricacies of life and human motivation and is able to deliver these in the most gripping of ways. The Music of Us (Still Life with Memories Book 3) is no exception. I found this to be a beautiful masterpiece of chapters, which draws the reader into a tapestry of history, war, love and a new understanding of the human spirit. For those who have not read books 1 & 2, I would recommend doing so, but if you've stumbled upon The Music of Us first, it will be of no consequence. This read, with its fascinating array of historical factors, music, art and a detailed view of Alzheimer, is so enthralling in its detail that it will more than satisfy. Yet, it isn't just Poznansky's devotion and captivating observation that is a thrilling experience, it is likewise her unique artistry of words. She captures the reader with flowing beauty. I felt the life and atmosphere of the 1940's, and was so absorbed in the story, a likewise yearning for a time I never knew. This novel will truly move you, take you into Uvi's realm. Her words unfurl like silk and touch the reader on a deep level. Highly, highly recommended.
