Review

I feel like I spent this whole book with tears in my eyes. Half the time from laughing so hard, and the other half as Sam and Jamie tried to break my gooey marshmallow heart. I don't quite know if this was grumpy v. sunshine, opposites attract, enemies to lovers, or some perfect combination of all of them. - Kirsten Lewendon

Thank you Evie Alexander, once again, for doing your magic and telling the story of these two beautiful, wounded, self-doubting souls in such a brilliant, brilliant way! Musical Games is the fourth book in the series which takes place in Kinloch in the Scottish Highlands (and don't tell the other books but I think this one might be my favorite!) and while it can be read as a standalone I think it is even better if you read the rest of the series first! - Sara M

Let's face it, it can be hard to make the next book in a series as good as, or better than, its predecessors, but I can sum up my feelings for Musical Games in three words. Pure. Dead. Brilliant! - Laura Nelson

Jamie is the perfect book boyfriend. His musical talent, shyness and ahem- 'bedroom expertise' renders him an AMAZING character!

And Sam. I just want to hug her. You don't have to be an actress to experience rejection. I think every woman in the world can relate.

Combined, the two provide a sweet and sexy love story filled with heat, heart and a soul satisfying happy ever after! - Lyndsey Gallagher

The Kinloch Series comes to a brilliant closing with Musical Games. This series is a must have. It goes from raw funny to crazy funny, then sweetly funny, and ends in silly funny. With gorgeous Scottish men in Kilts and lots of wild, sexy times! - Azalea Hudson

BOOKWORM REVIEW: Musical Games by Evie Alexander
RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 SPICE: 🔥🔥🔥 I think I've said it before but it does bear repeating: I have loved every visit to Kinloch. Evie Alexander has created a fabulous book universe that is a guaranteed laugh and will make you fall in love. Sam has run away to Kinloch, hoping that a run-in with Hollywood star Brad Bauer would give the soap opera starlet the big break she needs. In her quest, she meets Jamie, a Scottish electrician who lives with his mom. Jamie is quite comfortable with the quiet Kinloch living..until Sam entered the scene and has turned his life upside down. Now that she has committed them to writing the soundtrack to Braveheart 2, they are forced to spend more time together. And with proximity comes affection (at least in Romancelandia), and they are no exception. But these two want different things in life. Can they reconcile that or part ways when their movie commitments are done? I love this book. The chemistry, the humor. The arc between these two is chaotic but hilarious -- which is on par with the rest of the Kinloch stories. Be warned: this one really pushes the miscommunication trope. I usually get a little wary about a virgin MMC, but Jamie's character development is done so well. He has a charisma that I found so endearing and had me rooting for him. This is the last of the series. The book can be read as a standalone, but we get a chance to say goodbye to some of our favorite characters from previous books. Boy, was it hard to say farewell to all of them.

Hot Scot who learned all he knows by reading romance novels? Yes please! Sam blurted out a lie and now she and Jamie must work together to write an music album for a movie being filmed at the castle. As the songs emerge, so do the feelings.

The 4th book in the Kinloch series did not disappoint. Evie’s signature humor and shenanigans made multiple appearances for such a fun read. One minute I was grinning from ear to ear with heart flutters and the next I was laughing and shaking my head at the goings on.

I love these characters and town so much. I’m going to be really disappointed when I finally travel to Scotland and don’t stumble upon this charming town filled with brawny, hot men in kilts.

Typically, I like the “ripped smirky playboy with a heart of gold” type romance heroes, but after reading Musical Games, I may have cultivated a new favorite: “ripped dorky virgin with a heart of gold.”

This lovely book—fourth in the delightful Kinloch Series—is an example of the perfectly executed male virgin hero. Kinloch has become, over the course of these four books, one of my favorite mental vacation spots. The castle, the quaint town peopled with a quirky and lovable supporting cast, the absurdly hot men… yeah, stellar place to visit.

A supporting character whom I’ve adored since Book 1—shy, gorgeous tradie Jamie—has his own love story at last, and it’s full of the heat, hilarity, and dash of luscious angst for which Evie Alexander books are known. Jamie is the “like a brother” friend-from-childhood of Zoe, the FMC from Books 1 and 2, and I’ve been dying to see him fall in love.

Enter irrepressible Sam, Zoe’s best friend and TV-soap celebrity—there were bound to be fireworks when this sunshiney blonde pocket rocket collides with the awkward Scottish hottie. Could Jamie’s magical fingers—those which elicit such heart-wrenching melodies from a guitar—also have skills when applied to other smooth, curvy surfaces? You bet your boots.

They both fight their attraction at first, committed to working on a music-writing project together. The complications make for a delicious slow-burn buildup to the moment when they surrender. Everyone has his or her own secret pain, and there are plenty of twists on the journey, in addition to the complex inner struggles and family dynamics which are painted beautifully with the author’s deft hand.

Works as a standalone, but if you haven’t visited charming Kinloch yet, I recommend starting with Book 1 for the full experience. Five big stars!

I can’t remember the last time I read a book where the hero was a virgin. I went in knowing this (and not much else) and this book surprised and delighted me at every turn. Evie’s done an amazing job developing these fascinating, complex characters that I totally fell in love with. I love it when characters feel real and come to life in my mind when reading… These two did. Even the secondary characters felt like people I might recognise in real life. I never knew I wanted to visit Scotland but it turns out I do!

Read this! Start the whole series with this book, I don’t care. As long as you read this one!!! The book shares its timeline with two previous ones in the series, which is really well done, clever and fun. Each time, we get a new perspective and learn something new about what’s going on in Kinloch, while still enjoying an absorbing romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars – Life is like music; can Sam and Jamie find the high notes together?

Let’s face it, it can be hard to make the next book in a series as good as, or better than, its predecessors, but I can sum up my feelings for Musical Games in three words. Pure. Dead. Brilliant!

The antics of the Kinloch Crew had me howling with laughter! From Mrs McCreedie getting to live her best life with her RL ‘An Officer and a Gentleman’ moment (why is this something I can see The Mommy doing?) to Morag brandishing the fire extinguisher, not to mention demented Daleks and a stoned Yoda courtesy of Sam’s inner monologue… she’s a girl after my own heart, that one *smirks*.

Although, I did think Sam was going to give me an ulcer with her penchant for being economical with the truth. I lost count of how many times I uttered, “Gonnae no dae that!” Some might say Sam is a bit gallus however her bravado just masks her insecurities.

Do you like virgin MMCs? *wiggles eyebrows* What about cinnamon roll heroes? *sighs* Well, enter stage right Oor Jamie. I’ve had a soft spot for Jamie since Highland Games. It was all that blushing… but, who. Freaking. Knew?! *shrugs*

    *clears throat*

I was SO not expecting that. His ‘research’ made me cackle. *whispers* He’s not just a maestro with a guitar *winks* Let me put it this way, he is a tad orally fixated.

*sighs* I didn’t know if I wanted to mother him or jump his bones. Sorry… too much?

His insecurities rival Sam’s. Having said that, together they are dynamite, on and off stage. (I swear I was at the back of The King’s Arms shouting, ‘Gaun yersel!’ with the rest of the villagers!)

MG was just the tonic I need to cheer me up on a dreich day. Even so, I could have done without the ‘Love Lift Us Up Where We Belong’ earworm…
