About the author

Fiona McPherson has a PhD in cognitive psychology, from the internationally-regarded Psychology Department at the University of Otago, New Zealand. She has spent the decades since that achievement following the research into how the human brain thinks and learns and remembers, and communicating that knowledge and its practical implications to a lay audience. She has done this through her long-running and extensive websites (www.memory-key.com and www.mempowered.com), and her books. Her guiding principle is that people are more likely to use effective strategies if they understand how and why they work, and know precisely when and when not to use them.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2017Some of the ideas are okay, but much of the content is the same stuff presented in slightly different ways. I didn't find it worth the money, especially since the last several pages are blatant ads for her other works. I won't be purchasing any of them.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2023I have read other books by Dr. McPherson before I got this one. The key to the book is sifting out stratgies to help you remember and relate memories. She recommends do this right before you go to bed so you're ego is tired and not so involved. It is important to realize that this book is not a diary, where you emote over your day. Instead this is type of note-taking (hence why one friend found using mind maps helpful) on a specific thing you encountered or puzzled over during the day. Needless to say, like Julia Cameron's 3 page a day thing, it takes time get good at this.. I've done the Cameron thing and never found anything of use; because I think I'm not a good diarist. OTOH this method worked for me within a week because it was more bullet oriented -- just note down heading instead of elaborating on them. That was surprising as until I started working with it I did not realize how poor my memory was -- thus associations I made were either wrong or incomplete.
I don't know what the other person was talking about referring to her other books, I did not see that in my version. Most of the book is "empty" and undated with headings to help you along. I think one thing you can do that is not there is put in sticky page pointers otherwise you will miss "Book Notes" in the back where you record the books you read and short comment of something you learned, if anything from it. I use the score system 0-5 and note the pg number with quote. As I said, it has been helpful and that I do not have to write alot which is valuable to me. I am not the emotive type. If you aren't either, this may work; if you like to emote try Henriette Klauser or Cameron.
