Maybe you're getting older. Maybe you're stressed, or chronically tired, or just overwhelmed. Whatever the reason, you're finding it harder to remember things that matter to you. This journal is designed to help you.I've been writing about memory and learning skills for 25 years. I'm a great believer in practical strategies that don't 'cost' too much — that is, you don't have to spend a lot of time and effort mastering them. This journal is one of those. Your memory journal gives you a place to reflect on your day, and shape your memories (and thus, your story). But this is not a diary. This is a memory journal, and it requires a very specific type of note-taking. I'll provide advice and examples to help you with this critical skill for both learning and everyday memory, but most of all, this journal will provide you with the opportunity to get the practice in this that you need, if you're serious in wanting to improve your memory.Along the way, the journal also provides tips and advice, with a weekly focus, to help you: - learn some basic strategies for remembering the things you want to remember - set in place some good habits which will help protect your brain - learn a little about your memory, how it works, what works for it, how good it is for different tasks, and how much help it needs for some tasks.

Fiona McPherson has a PhD in cognitive psychology, from the internationally-regarded Psychology Department at the University of Otago, New Zealand. She has spent the decades since that achievement following the research into how the human brain thinks and learns and remembers, and communicating that knowledge and its practical implications to a lay audience. She has done this through her long-running and extensive websites (www.memory-key.com and www.mempowered.com), and her books. Her guiding principle is that people are more likely to use effective strategies if they understand how and why they work, and know precisely when and when not to use them.

Some of the ideas are okay, but much of the content is the same stuff presented in slightly different ways. I didn't find it worth the money, especially since the last several pages are blatant ads for her other works. I won't be purchasing any of them.

I have read other books by Dr. McPherson before I got this one. The key to the book is sifting out stratgies to help you remember and relate memories. She recommends do this right before you go to bed so you're ego is tired and not so involved. It is important to realize that this book is not a diary, where you emote over your day. Instead this is type of note-taking (hence why one friend found using mind maps helpful) on a specific thing you encountered or puzzled over during the day. Needless to say, like Julia Cameron's 3 page a day thing, it takes time get good at this.. I've done the Cameron thing and never found anything of use; because I think I'm not a good diarist. OTOH this method worked for me within a week because it was more bullet oriented -- just note down heading instead of elaborating on them. That was surprising as until I started working with it I did not realize how poor my memory was -- thus associations I made were either wrong or incomplete.

I don't know what the other person was talking about referring to her other books, I did not see that in my version. Most of the book is "empty" and undated with headings to help you along. I think one thing you can do that is not there is put in sticky page pointers otherwise you will miss "Book Notes" in the back where you record the books you read and short comment of something you learned, if anything from it. I use the score system 0-5 and note the pg number with quote. As I said, it has been helpful and that I do not have to write alot which is valuable to me. I am not the emotive type. If you aren't either, this may work; if you like to emote try Henriette Klauser or Cameron.
