We both know it’s a lie. So many times, I’ve had to imagine it. What will it be like to see her lying there, her body empty, her spirit gone?
I take her hand and squeeze it hard. “Are you scared?” I say.
“Yeah… I am.”
MY SECRET SISTER
Two women, two secret heartbreaks…
San Francisco – Claire is living every mother’s worst nightmare. Her daughter, Jess, is suffering from a rare illness and desperately needs a bone marrow transplant. In a race against time, Claire will do anything to find the match that will save her daughter’s life.
Washington D.C. – Marianne has suffered a heartbreaking string of miscarriages and IVF failures. With her perfect life crumbling around her, she will do whatever it takes to become a mother.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis story is the Ragu of Family Stories - It's In There. Being a Daughter, a Mother, a Wife and a Sister in Emotional Hateful, Joyful , Sometimes Unthinkable Life situations. So much of this story shadows many of my life experiences (no i don't think there are other siblings out there... but only the Shadow knows). Thanks for the though provoking story).
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLoved the idea of DNA technology can have both positive and negative effects on situations. Loved the evolving relationship. Could have had less of Claire being so controlling and so angry.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI chose this book because it deals with a lot of morals, values and ethics similar to something I'd read by Jodi Picoult. It definitely didn't disappoint. Not only is there a secret sister, but you get to see the individual lives of each, learn about their struggles, and how each is facing the brink of losing everything. There are a lot of small twists and turns for the reader. The story had me placing myself into each person's life and decision making process--asking myself if I'd do the same. I really enjoyed this story & if you're a fan of Jodi Picoult, you will enjoy this book, too. Great job Lauren Westwood for not duplicating JP's style, and making this your own!!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2021Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseFor some reason the characters names made this book hard to follow. All of the men were Mike Dave and Steve, or something. In the females were Jess, Becky, Claire & Marianne. I had to keep stopping to figure out who was who

- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSome parts a little too unbelievable, but enjoyed the story and characters. Couldn't imagine finding out about a secret sister and dealing with all the hidden truths.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great page turner. Was always excited to see what happened next
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat can I say? Lauren Westwood has done it again. My Secret Sister is another fantastic book by this underrated author who deserves a spot up there with the best women’s fiction writers. She manages to combine page-turning suspense with heartfelt emotional drama, while somehow also maintaining a strand of dark humour.
Overall, it is a very well-written book. As is usual with this author, the characters are complex and not entirely likable. They do things that sometimes make you cringe and want to shout at them. This is not an easy book full of fluff. While I don’t have personal experience with a lot of the issues in the book, I was right there turning the pages. I particularly liked Becky’s narrative and the way her character was woven into the story. All in all, another phenomenal read from this author, who always keeps us guessing as to what she’s going to write next.

4.0 out of 5 stars DNA testing can open a "can of worms'
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhen two women on opposite sides of the country learn of each others existence through DNA testing, a story unfolds that is shocking to both and has huge impact for both families. It pulls on your emotions and questions your own perspective on how you would react faced with this situation. An interesting read that exposes both the positive and negative aspects of DNA testing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting issues
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseClaire and Marianne live on opposite sides of the US and only become aware of each other through DNA testing. Both have serious issues to contend with. Claire’s younger daughter Jess has a rare form of anaemia and will die without a bone marrow transplant. Marianne has had many IVF failures and is desperate to find an egg donor. Dave is the CEO of MyStory, the company that’s touting do it yourself testing kits. He wants his company to be bigger than Facebook, believing firmly in the value of human connection. The trouble is, DNA testing might well reveal skeletons in closets: children whose biological parents are not their social parents, for example. You can probably think of all kinds of worms that could come out of this can. Surprisingly, this doesn’t seem to have been adequately considered, just as the downside of Facebook wasn’t.
There were times when I didn’t enjoy reading this book because I found the hyper emotional reactions of Claire in particular unreasonable (though God knows, she’s enduring a lot). There seemed to be a particularly American overwroughtness to them and she is supposed to be an intelligent journalist. Westwood milks the plot for all its worth in terms of misjudgments, misunderstandings and cliff hanging expectations. We know we’re being manipulated and it’s frankly annoying. Still, it’s a serious issue with many possible repercussions that deserves to be widely discussed. Maybe it’s just that Australians are more laconic. On the whole.
