Mysterious Mr. Darcy: A Pride & Prejudice Variation (Variations on Pride and Prejudice) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 606 ratings

When Mr. Darcy appears at the Meryton Assembly, no one knows who he is. As a man haunted by an event in his past, he prefers to stay out of the public eye. He certainly doesn’t need someone like Miss Bennet asking questions. Fortunately, he is more than equal to the task of putting her off.

There is nothing Elizabeth Bennet likes more than a laugh – except for a mystery. From the moment she first encounters Mr. Darcy, she senses he is hiding something. But the more she tries to find out who he is, the more evasive he becomes. Eventually, frustrated, she turns away from him.

When Darcy succeeds only too well in driving her away, he begins to realize that what he really wants to do is open his heart to her.

Join us in this Pride and Prejudice story of a handsome gentleman who eventually puts the faults of his past behind him and emerges from his shell to find love.

I had not read a variation like this one despite the many, many other authors and variations I have read. While the mystery wasn’t as incomprehensible as it might have been, the mention of battlefield service was unexpected. Bingley was more immature than I expected. Darcy was so immersed in his own guilt that he was his own worst enemy. Whether his self-imposed seclusion was necessary is difficult to determine. Would Georgiana have been ruined if Darcy’s trial had taken place closer in time to the duel? Hard to say.

Some deductions for the editing in places: e.g. Mr. Long instead of Mrs. Long or “serious” instead of “series”. Overall a pleasant variation for a lazy afternoon.

This variation has all the elements for a great story. A mysterious Mr Darcy, what's is he hiding from? A love triangle between Bingley, who infatuated with Elizabeth, Darcy who come to admire Elizabeth for her wits, is falling in love. Elizabeth, who is pressured my her mother to accept Bingley. Elizabeth's goal is find out who is John Darcy and what is he hiding? This is a delightful variation, it's well written, the characters are fully developed. Highly recommended.

Wish could give 3.5 stars but being what rating sys allows….This Lizzy actually rather shallow & immature (to the point of rudeness - wanting to ferret out gentleman’s secrets?!! Plus her advanced age led to mercenary behaviors which so disappointed my JAFF kinda sensibility) with only brief flashes of EB insight - all of which put me off quickly. This Darcy much the same as cannon but more likeable which I sincerely enjoyed; other characters much the same (but what’s with Mrs Lucas getting some of her own back vs Mrs B, by sitting Maria next to Bingly (😝); writing is smooth, dialogue handled well, jumps in foreword time bit clunky. Ok read to pass the time but def not close to my fav list. The storyline is clever but wish EB’s character more recognizable which may have been the authors point lol. I’m such a PP snob I admit. (To make myself more confident of my review— will read addl MF’s books based on her writing skills exemplified in this book; my penchant for more canonical JAFF could be influencing my ambivalence here)

Our story opens three years later than canon. Darcy has become a recluse at an estate in Cornwall owned by his Uncle. Bingley convinces him to visit Netherfield where it is unlikely anyone will recognize him. We are immediately introduced to the central mystery of the story: why must Darcy hide his identity?

The advance of three years has changed the Bennet family. Jane has married a barrister and lives in London. With Jane absent from the Meryton Assembly, who will be Bingley’s angel? Elizabeth has refused Mr. Collins proposal; her Mother still berates her for it. The youngest girls have matured somewhat but still can be very foolish. Fortunately, no militia in sight!

Elizabeth accepts the mission of discovering the secret surrounding Mr. Darcy. She prods; he sidesteps. Eventually, they begin to enjoy each other. Darcy knows he is not free to marry; especially he cannot marry Bingley’s angel! But how serious is Bingley in his pursuit of Elizabeth Bennet? How serious is Elizabeth about Bingley? Is she ready to marry someone she likes since she has not found someone she loves?

Meditation is a valuable exercise, but eventually you have to open up your eyes and look around. ~ Dan Millman

Both Darcy and Elizabeth must reflect on their altered positions in life.

Darcy must contemplate how different his life is when he is not Mr. Darcy of Pemberley. All of Meryton believes he is the poor friend who is imposing on the generosity of Mr. Bingley. Bingley, not Darcy, is pursued by all the mothers with unmarried daughters. Bingley, not Darcy, is respected as the master of property.

Elizabeth is forced to contemplate a marriage for a prudent motive when Mr. Bennet is on his deathbed suffering a serious fever. Finally, she can understand her mother’s fear of Mr. Collins taking over Longbourn. She likes Bingley. If he should propose, would she accept?

Clues to the mystery are revealed slowly but not completely until near the end. I was left with some unresolved questions:
How did Darcy get to the Continent after the incident?
Why did he return to England?
Why would he join the Army when he was an only son?

For my money, this is the best yet from Monica Fairview. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys JAFF.

Seek in reading and thou shalt find in meditation; knock in prayer and it shall be opened in contemplation. ~ John of the Cross

Right from the beginning, the reader knew the story was going to be different than P&P so it was interesting to see how the story developed. The story wrapped up well though I world have liked to see a different ending for Bingley as this one seemed a bit too cute. Overall, a good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A unique variation...
Reviewed in Canada on April 19, 2018
    My Rating: 4.5*

"But disguise of every sort is my abhorrence." (Pride & Prejudice)

In this unique variation, Mr. Darcy is in hiding for the past three years. It is 1814 and Mr. Bingley is trying to get Mr. Darcy to come to Netherfield to assist him in learning how to run an estate. The Bennet household has seen some changes too. Jane is already married and living in London. Mr. Collins has proposed and been refused by Elizabeth Bennet but Charlotte accepts him. So between Bingley's pleas and a letter from Georgiana that alarms Darcy, he agrees. But his identity as Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pemberley must not be revealed!

So begins our tale that changes the dynamics of events that still take place as to canon...an Assembly, an insult overheard, an illness, and a ball at Netherfield. Though Elizabeth has a wonderful first impression of Mr. Bingley, he doesn't quite intrigue her as the mysterious Mr. Darcy. So as these events take place, Elizabeth tries to learn why Mr. Darcy is so secretive.

"He wanted her to know the truth, but he could not." (quote from the book)

I enjoyed this twist and the lively banter between Elizabeth and Darcy. Mr. Bingley is as exuberant as ever and very attentive to Elizabeth. As she learns a little about Mr. Darcy, we can glean even more from what is said or his reactions. What I think I enjoyed the most was Darcy learning the townspeople reaction to him...or lack of. His pride certainly takes a beating as does his heart.

This 'what if' certainly grabs your attention and holds it to the very end. Lives have been altered, hearts are betrayed and finding the courage to face your fears must be made.
