Nite Fire: Flash Point Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 392 ratings

A supernatural murder mystery—with dragons!

For shapeshifter, Dahlia Nite, life was simple as an assassin for the revered Dragon Queen of Drimera. She commanded her own squad. She had an apprentice, a lover. She reaped the rewards of blind loyalty—until the fateful day her empathic abilities awoke. Falling from favorite to fugitive in the blink of a dragon's eye, Dahlia fled her world for ours.

For nearly a century, it was simple here, too. She lived on the road, protecting humanity by hunting the monsters that slipped in through the torn veil between the worlds. Monsters like her. But when a supernatural serial killer strikes Sentinel City, the unexplained deaths shed light on what should never be seen. The hunt becomes personal. And Dahlia's uncomplicated life, once more, goes up in flames.

To stop the brutal killings, Dahlia infiltrates the local police. She partners with Alex Creed, a handsome, hard-nosed human detective that is far too perceptive for his own good. But working with a man driven to uncover the truth isn't easy when her very existence is part of the lie—an elaborate ruse as old as time that, if exposed, could destroy them all. Yet how does Dahlia solve the case when her involvement puts those she cares about in danger? How does she keep her secret when the clues all point to someplace she never thought to go again? Home.

Flash Point is the action-packed 1st book in the Nite Fire Series, an immersive mash-up of urban fantasy and murder mystery with shapeshifters, dragons, and parallel worlds.

From the Author

Murder, mystery, mayhem, urban legends, supernatural serial killers - and dragons!

The Nite Fire Series was inspired by my love for such TV shows as Supernatural, Lost Girl, Jessica Jones, Buffy, Grimm, X-Files, and more. Each story is written as a fast-faced, action-packed episode where Dahlia and the gang bounce from one mystery to the next, solving murders and hunting whichever monster-of-the-week is currently wreaking havoc on the dark streets of Sentinel City. At the same time, an underlying global threat evolves throughout the pages.

If you dare to take the ride, be sure to buckle up. There are twists around every corner!

Born in a small Kansas town on the Missouri river, C.L. Schneider grew up in a house of avid readers and overflowing bookshelves. Her first full-length novel took shape while she was still in high school, on a typewriter in her parent's living room. Though Schneider has been writing all of her life, Magic-Price (the award-winning first installment in The Crown of Stones Trilogy) was her first published novel.

While her main focus is epic and urban fantasy for adults, she dabbles in all areas of speculative fiction. Her stories tend to be dark, conflict-laden tales full of magic and mystery, action and intrigue, antiheroes and villains, monsters and myths, friendship, love, loss and sacrifice—with enough twists to give you whiplash.

Dahlia Nite is a "llyriken," a half-dragon shifter who hails from a faraway world. She attempts to escape her past as an assassin and arrives on Earth. After drifting from place to place for over a century, she arrives at Sentinel City, a rain-slick, Gotham City-esque metropolis filled with seedy dives and monsters--both human and supernatural--around every corner.

Dahlia poses as a detective to solve a series of gruesome murders. She must work together with detectives Creed and Evans along with a number of faces from her hazy past she'd rather forget. There's far more to these "spontaneous human combustion" cases than meets the eye. Looks like her past is catching up with her sooner than she thought...

There are three things to really love about this book:

Schneider's prose is absolutely gorgeous and exquisite. Nearly every other sentence had me stopping and whispering, "Wow, that's such a pretty description." It flows smoothly like a musical composition, even.

Dahlia is an excellent, larger-than-life "superhero" protagonist with a complicated and mysterious backstory that adds layers to her character, making her far more compelling than your usual one-dimensional "tough" heroine in the genre. I also enjoyed her sharp yet playful banter with Evans and her ex-boyfriend.

The crime scene investigation sequences are really cool. If you've ever played the "Batman Arkham" series of video games, there's the "Detective Mode" that allows you to examine the evidence and piece together a looping "movie" of what might have taken place at the scene of the crime. Schneider has hit upon a creative and fresh fantasy take on this concept, and cleverly ties it into more mysteries from Dahlia's elusive past.

The only weaknesses I could find in the book are that the pacing may be a tad too much of a "slow burn" for some UF fans, and that the ending doesn't quite come together completely with all the various characters and subplots the story had been juggling up to that point. Still, I was so enthralled by Dahlia herself, the prose, and the unraveling of the interesting mysteries (with the awesome crime scene investigation chapters) that it would be unfair to dock a star for those minor issues alone.

If you're a fan of Urban Fantasy books, film noir, or gripping mysteries, pick this one up right away!

This one is difficult to write a good review of. It's established early on that the protagonist is a llyriken, a half-dragon shapeshifter originally from another world that has 'exits' to our own. She's been drifting on Earth, but has now returned to Sentinel City after an absence of several decades.

She's called to help investigate a crime scene, and the action proceeds from there. Suffice to say, her own past as an assassin on her own world has found her, and now she needs to do something about it to keep even more humans whom she has somehow come to care for die.

This seems to be a set up book for a series, and therefore has a hard time settling which direction it wants to go. Her partner doesn't believe she's trying to solve the crime and knows she is somehow involved, her identity as a llyriken is compromised with another person who's not her partner, and her oldest friend in the city owns a gym where she shames the mostly male customers with her strength. The resolution seems a little too pat, too easy, and therefore unstable.

It was easy enough to read, but never really settled on a direction. I liked it, but haven't yet decided if I intend to continue reading the series.

    Nite Fire: Flash Point
    By: C.L. Schneider
    5 out of 5 stars

The story Nite Fire: Flash Point by C.L. Schneider is a thrilling supernatural shifter book. This is a story that will capture your imagination and you will not want to put it down until you have finished. It has action, mysteries that must be solved, and plenty of awesome characters. Dalia Nite has fled her homeworld to live in the human realm because she was going to be executed. There she protects humans from what they don’t know exist. She hunts down the creatures that would do them harm. Now there has been a series of murders in Sentinal City which are a complete mystery and she has been given the task of investigating them. Will Dalia find out who is committing these murders and why they are taking place?

This book is awesome! This author knows how to weave a story that will mesmerize and leave you wanting to read more. I have read the other series that she has written and was blown away by that one as well. I love how she gives so much detail to the story and the characters. There are many characters in this book but the one that I love the most is Dalia. She is a shapeshifter that has had to leave her home as her actions one night caused her to be slated for execution. Alone she lives among humans vowing to protect them. Dalia is an excellent fighter and she takes any problem head on. I felt for Dalia and that she was forced to leave her home. She takes jobs hunting down creatures who find their way to the human realm. Dalia has a mentor that has taken her under his wing however he doesn't always reveal the whole truth to her. Dalia has two problems when she starts to investigate this series of murders. The first is who is committing them and why the second is make sure that information about things that shouldn’t be known is not revealed. Where will this investigation lead Dalia? Can she solve the case before more lives are lost?

Dalia begins to uncover secrets about her home world and those that live there. She is constantly running into acquaintances from the past. Dalia has special abilities the guide her, she also has dreams at night that haunt her. This is a story that is action packed and had me reminding myself to breathe. It is one that you don’t want to miss. Read this story and follow Dalia through her investigation and what she finds. This is the first book in the Nite Fire Series and I can’t wait to read the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A dark, gritty urban fantasy that is reminiscent of Jessica Jones

This book took me a long time to finish, not because I wasn't enjoying it but because every inch of the world is so rich and loaded with fantastic details which all come together to build an image of this heavy, dark city plagued by crime and a nasty underworld of creature attacks. I was strongly reminded of the Jessica Jones TV show. This book has the same film-noir feel to it - sour, embittered detectives and dark underworld goings-on. The protagonist, Dahlia Nite is also very Jessica Jones - strong, independent and won’t take any nonsense from anybody!
As with all of C.L. Schneider's work, the plot is complex and well-developed, the characters grey and layered. Nothing is as it seems, and there is always layer upon layer of mystery, intrigue, snappy comebacks and downright brutal violence. Schneider is one of few authors I read who can make my jaw physically drop. She is a master of the epic reveal!

A cracking read - I can't wait for the next in the series!

On book three of the series and still can't quite get over how good this is. :-)

Just LOVE that the dragons of this series aren't the usual 'smokin' hot alphaholes but ya forgive him cuz he's your fated mate or summat'... well, romance tropes, right ;-)?
You are not getting the typical 'dragon guy falls in forever love with sassy human girl' kind of storyline with this one, that's for sure!

The world building is both broad and intricate, with a huge back story that is slowly unfolding - in fact you'll need to deal with the urge for instant gratification because the author does BUILD it up!
The first person POV works particularly well with this, even when it is at times frustrating because neither heroine nor reader get a chance to grasp the bigger picture.

Fighting scenes are fairly graphic and females fight and die as much as males do, so if that is something that impinges on your reading enjoyment, then this might not be the series for you - although, in all fairness, it does not revel in goriness; it just does not shy away from broken bones etc so best be prepared.

The second book is better than the first, or maybe it's just that the first is the ground where it all needs to get established, and it can get frustrating, what with the world of dragons and lyrrikens guided by rules one rebels at almost instinctively because, phew, unfair MUCH?

The female protagonist was instantly likeable for me, and I look forward to the moment when the bigger picture is revealed and she finally gets the chance to go from reacting to acting.
'twill be glorious I am sure :-).

Looking forward to reading more from this author, yes indeedy!

As soon as I opened this book I was hooked! It is captivating and never has any slow points to it. You get pulled into this mystical world that is so wonderfully built. I really am enjoying the read. The author has very good writing and keeps you wanting more.

I cannot give it a full 5 stars as there are still a few grammar/spelling mistakes. Some are small, while others I just can't get past! I do believe if the author gave another read through she will catch them for future books.
