About the author

I was born in the 1980s in Yorkshire and live in Essex, where I belong to a small pride of cats. I have a second cousin who made the Guinness Book of Records for brewing the world's strongest beer, and I once ran over myself with a Segway scooter. These two things are in no way related. I've worked in an airport, a lab, and various shops, but much prefer writing because me and mornings are definitely not the best of friends.
I sold my first book in 2005 and since then have published many award-winning paranormal and contemporary romances and light-hearted mysteries, including the popular Sophie Green series. My sci-fi action romance Max Seventeen won the Paranormal Romantic Novel of the Year from the Romantic Novelists Association in 2017. Under the pen name Cat Marsters I also had a successful career in erotic romance, winning an Epic award in 2010.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI’ve read Johnson’s sci-fi series and decided to try this genre of her books, and I wasn’t disappointed. Fast paced with snappy dialogue, it was a fun escape and a happy roller coaster of a ride that I thoroughly enjoyed.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI enjoyed the opposites attract between the hero and heroine. The fact the heroine was mixed race made this story even more special. I liked how the heroine knew her past would make it challenging but she continued to push on and try to change her life. I will admit I was concerned a bit when the heroine had to interact with her family because she kept falling into the role she typically held with them. It also made me more sympathetic and thus more happy for her happiness. The relationship between the hero and his closest friend was also touching. As were the glimpses into his life and struggles as a royal. Really looking forward to the next one.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI love how this book reads, how there are ups and downs, and how each character feels real. The plot is a bit fantastical, but hey. That's what the genre is all about! One of my favorites by the author!

- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGoodness!! I thoroughly enjoyed this book. .Jamie was a sweetheart. Clodagh, practical both funny as hell. I also loved the inside with the royal family. Sad about Edward but all in all quite enjoyable. Great job.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLiked the storyline. Put me off the number of misspellings in the book. Hard to read that way. Liked the very strong female protagonist, especially how she does not just "fall" for the prince, but makes him work for it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2019Format: KindleI really enjoyed this book. It's my first time reading one of Kate's books and her style of storytelling kept my interest so much that I read the book in one sitting. The only thing I that would have taken it over the top for me was for Jamie and Clo to have had a child together instead of kittens.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2019Format: KindleVerified Purchase**I must start this review off by saying I personally did not finish this novel. So, this review is of only what I read.**
With that being said, I wanted to like the novel, especially given the marriage of Harry and Meghan. I love royal romances. However, there were some things in this novel that made me uncomfortable.
As an African American woman, I took great offense to the abusive boyfriend of the heroine's roommate calling her an "ugly Black slut" after she walks in on him towering over the gf he's just hit. Then to try to interject humor after this abusive scene is beyond me. The heroine proclaims she likes "dark meat" in oppose to the abusive boyfriend's fair complexion.
Ultimately, there were a lot of racial assumptions and stereotypes in this novel that were offensive. I'd hope with all of the news about authors writing characters outside their race, this author would've done things differently. Sadly, she didn't.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart and funny
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNot Your Cinderella is a change of pace from Kate Johnson, who is best known for her fantasy and sci-fi romances, but fear not! This book is still full of the snappy dialogue and detailed characterisation which is her hallmark.
I worried when I started the book that Clodagh was going to be boring: a barmaid from a council estate, studying between pulling pints. But instead I found a multi-faceted woman who has seen rock bottom from the inside and is doing everything she can to pull herself out. Random Facts Girl (read the book) is a total delight, and her wonderfully horrible family are observed in a way which still makes them kind of sympathetic (which is a miracle. Trust me.).
Jamie is a lovely hero. He's delightfully nerdy and the details of royal life from his POV are fascinating. He's a prince, but also a soldier and a student and a quiet kind of knight in shining armour.
The whole book feels...intimate. Despite both Clodagh and Jamie coming from huge families, and despite the cast of supporting characters (honourable mention to Oll, Jamie's best mate, for being a star), it has a coziness to it.
Anyway, my waffling aside, it's a gorgeous story with a HEA and several laugh-, gasp- and cheer-aloud moments. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Likeable characters in a good story
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI liked this. Cheesy idea but artfully told. Not cliche and good characters you cared about. Leave aside the author’s bizarre desire to head bash the reader with her vaccine ideology ( too simplistic for words ) and there’s an interesting and light hearted yet thoughtful read. Not read this author before but would seek out another.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved the characters, loved the story, loved the humour.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI loved this book. Prince Jamie is starting PhD at Cambridge. He's awfully proper when he's in public, but he's a computer science geek in private. My kind of hero.
Clodagh is a mixed race barmaid, who is trying to get her A-levels and go to university to study history. She's bright, but she's only one or two shifts away from homelessness.
The pace gallops along and there's so much to unpack about class and society and racism in there.
I loved the characters, loved the story, loved the humour. Brilliant stuff.
The usual disclosure - I know the author in real life. We have both written for the same publisher in the past. I genuinely like her books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic story of love overcoming all!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI had quite low expectations of this book, expecting it to be loosely based on Prince Harry and Meghan. Obviously in a book about the royal family, there are comparisons with that but it is a brilliant book which is exceptionally well written with characters which are easy to love (most of them, anyway!). I am so glad I've read it, I just can't stop thinking about Prince Jamie, he's lovely. If you love the Royal family and a good romance, you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great read from Kate Johnson
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAs always, Kate Johnson delivers a great story. Clodagh and Jamie and are funny, sweet, flawed and oddly, given the context of their characters, realistic. Humour is a feature throughout the book, and in particular the interactions between Clodagh, Jamie, and their families. Alongside this however, there is also a genuine poignancy to their situations and an emotional intensity which goes well beyond the usual.
I always love Kate Johnson's characters and there is nothing cliché about them, in this most cliché-ridden context. A feel-good HEA with more depth and humour than you might expect if you've not read her work before. Read it!
