Chasing Lightning: An Urban Fantasy Adventure (Magic of Nasci Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 184 ratings

The other nature wizards wield fire, earth, air, and water to protect the forest.

Only I bring the lightning.

My name’s Ina, and I command the elements like an honest-to-goddess nature wizard. I’ve defeated my fair share of creepy cryptids that go bump in the night, but now a monster with a Medusa gaze preys upon the Oregon coast. It’s going on a murder spree against the native fauna. It doesn’t help that game warden Vincent Garcia has noticed an uptick in endangered carcasses and blames me for poaching them.

I do have an ace up my sleeve with my unique lightning magic. The only problem: it’s like using a stick of dynamite to kill a house spider. I’m not supposed to use it, but the supernatural predator grows stronger every day. Either I banish this horror show soon, or there won’t be much forest left to protect.

* * * * *

Chasing Lightning is the first in the action-packed Magic of Nasci series that explores the magical dangers that lurk deep in the woods. It’s like Avatar: The Last Airbender and urban fantasy had a superhero love child.

A different take on magic and magic wielding people, this is the story of Ina, an apprentice shepherd, whose job it is to protect the nature spirits from being drained by evil spirits.
Although she is told that no-one can harness lightning, Ina feels drawn to storms, and compelled to try.
When she and her mentor come across a possessed whale, it sends her on a dangerous journey as she tries to keep everyone safe, all while trying to harness the lightning.

As I said above, this is a different take on the magical world, but an interesting one. While Ina has some dangerous adventures, we don’t really learn much about her abilities, mostly because she doesn’t know much about the lightning either!
Because it is a unique premise, it makes for a fascinating read and an enjoyable and fast paced urban fantasy for UF fans.

I absolutely love books that have a well thought out and executed world with a unique magic system. The combination of these two things make this an epic beginning to this series.

While I did enjoy the book I have to admit that the main character is kinda selfish, brash and doesn't listen to others or their advice very well. I really hope that as the series continues and grows that she also grows out of these character flaws

I was perplexed by the unique world created in this entertaining fast read. The problem of the vaettur (monsters) draining "pith" from the protected pinnipeds (seals) seemed non-sensical when so many dryant (ethereal) animals in the Nasci plane drew their pith from the elements directly. For the shepherds to merely slaughter the invading parents and babies, while failing to consider the needs and reasons for the parents to cross the rift, seemed prejudicial and short-sighted.

I was also troubled by the conflict between the various mentor-protege teams. Rather than all working together for the good of their mutual culture, there seemed to be a rather unhealthy competition. Perhaps Ina's rebel characteristics created conflict, but the clique-ish blonde pair seemed more chip-on-th-shoulder-oriented regardless.

I'd also have liked a bit more culture-building to explain the Nasci abilities and protection program; it remained ill-defined and nebulous as to why certain creatures were beneficial and protected while others were slaughtered as evil. Without more context and development, I'm barely at 3☆, but the editing and proofing were good and the story unique enough to intrigue.

I was lured into reading this book by a sample first chapter -- and oh my was I hooked! Ina's first adventure was the most fun I've had since the early Harry Potter books. Set in actual locations in Oregon, and referencing at least one actual event (watch the YouTube video on the exploding whale), the characters are a delight, the conflicts are realistic, and the action and tension are riveting. Making my enjoyment even greater, this is a rare occasion in which I found no editing mistakes whatsoever, and (at least from my POV) the author's writing style is exceptional. There are four more books in the series, which I've purchased (a rarity for me), a fifth book in the works that I've pre-ordered, and (if you sign up for the author's newsletter) a short prequel. If the stars align for this author, I think a movie deal would be well-deserved.

Someone stole my word, but I still think "delight" is the right one, so I'm keeping it. This novel was a pleasure.

As someone who grew up in the Pacific Northwest, the descriptions of the particular elements are very apt and bring to mind my own palpable experiences in the heavy forests and perpetually cold coastline. Also the feature that Oregon is split, little known to those not from there, by a mountain range separating wet and rainy forests in the west from deserts in the east (Oregon is mostly desert).

I totally loved the (not a spoiler) exploding whale, which is a genuine part of Oregon coast history (look it up!)

    Massive props. Great read. :)

    5.0 out of 5 stars A unique take …

So interesting and refreshing to read a book that concerns the supernatural with a unique take on the situation. No vampires or ghosts, simply ‘shepherds’ that look after the flock (all animals on earth) and protect them from supernatural attacks. Ina is a trainee shepherd but a little different as she cannot only harness the usual elemental powers but also has an affinity with lightning too! She’s also struggling to leave normal life behind. A lovely book that kept me enthralled until the end.

I enjoyed this book, especially as it had no sex or swearing and just a hint of romance at the end.
Ina was a bit "stroppy" but brave. The magic element was a bit different - protecting animals, in her
case mostly seals. It was rather short and finished at 90% so I wouldn't have wanted to pay full price.
I would read another by this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written, enjoyable, but short.

First I would like to say that I enjoyed the story, the characters, the world building and so on. Its a good story.

The only problem i have with it really is that it is a bit short, it will probably only take you 2 or three hours to read, and as such I would suggest that the book feels a little overpriced.
