Breathing Water: An Urban Fantasy Adventure (Magic of Nasci Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 63 ratings

Why did the latest supernatural predator have to show up underwater?

Mastering the four elements is no joke. My mentor Guntram has me practicing hours each day drawing the underwater breathing sigil, but no matter how hard I try, I can’t get it right. Why is it so hard to draw one stupid magic symbol?

I don’t have a lot of time to perfect my form, though, not when I’m facing off against a creature who swims like a fish. Too bad it also has claws and a vicious personality. Game warden Vincent Garcia thinks he can help me fight it, but what can a vanilla human do? I’ve got all the magic in the world, and this vaettur’s always one step ahead.

Here’s hoping I get the hang of water magic soon before this thing drags me under… permanently.

She loves family, fantasy, and food (mostly in that order) and is on the constant look out for new co-op board games to play.

DM Fike wanted desperately to become a superhero growing up. Barring that, she would have enjoyed riding a unicorn or at least meeting a fairy. Since none of that happened, she decided to write books about everyday people discovering magic through a series of epic adventures. She’s currently living out her own happily-ever-after with her husband and two wonderful children in Oregon.

The characters are wonderful and evolving. The plot is twisty. The world building is great. The story ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, so have the next book cued up before reading.

It is rare to find an urban fantasy that is free of the usual tropes in this saturated market. No vampires, werewolves or fae! The world Ms Fike creates is unique and fascinating - a hidden group that protects the Earth and its goddess. Ina is a delightfully quirky and eccentric character who is self-effacing and funny. I love it when an author is able to write humor that flows naturally and is not forced. Ina is a free spirit who has definitely found her calling but has a difficult time following the rather strict parameters of being a shepherd and trying to contain a gift that no one else has. Will she use it to save the day and be allowed to develop it? Breathing Water has clever writing and such an inventive plot. I really, really enjoy this series and hope there are many more adventures to come!

Ina just can not listen to her Mentor, true the Mentors are not listening to her either. Two wrongs do not make it right. The Shepherds are so set in their Code, that they dismiss any input Ina tries to give. I do not know which of the two problems irritates me most when reading this story.

Oh my goodness! What an amazing follow-up to Chasing Fire! Ms. Fike has outdone herself in creating a magical universe that overlies (and underlies) the prosaic Earth we're familiar with, and has populated it with people and creatures that are entirely believable and compelling. Ina, our protagonist, is a delightful blend of twenty-something angst, impetuosity, intuitiveness, and klutziness, and the stories, told in her first-person accounts, are filled with youthful insights , action, adventure, and humor. In this book she and her fellow shepherds face their most daunting challenge to date, and we are swept along with her as the story builds to its conclusion. I had to exercise the most severe self-discipline to avoid racing through this book in one go. You can do that easily, but I like to savor an excellent read like a fine wine and sip, rather than gulp. Very highly recommended!

Wonderful continuation of Ina's story. Complications get bigger, bosses get badder, love interest gets more nosy into matters way over his head. A fun read!

This book follows on from the last where the shepherd try to save the environment from invading forces.
Being a novice I'm not good at following the rules, I came to be a shepherd late when most start training as a child,I was well in my teens when I show promise of my talent,
    Follow me in my adventure.
    Great read
