Soaring in Air: An Urban Fantasy Adventure (Magic of Nasci Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 44 ratings

I really screwed up this time. How can I fix everything that happened on Mt. Hood?

I don’t know how Guntram and the other shepherds can ever forgive me. There are some mistakes you can’t rewind, some actions that can never be repaired.

But I feel a storm on the horizon, as clearly as if that annoyingly elusive kitsune fox were standing next to me. Vincent thinks I have to embrace my responsibilities. But how can I redeem myself? And even if I wanted to, do I have enough magical juice left to make a difference?

* * * * *

Soaring in Air is the fifth and final book in Ina’s journey as a rookie shepherd of Nasci. With unexpected allies, an underdog heroine, and plenty of action, this book reveals whether she succeeds in becoming a full-fledged nature wizard… or dies trying.

DM Fike wanted desperately to become a superhero growing up. Barring that, she would have enjoyed riding a unicorn or at least meeting a fairy. Since none of that happened, she decided to write books about everyday people discovering magic through a series of epic adventures. She’s currently living out her own happily-ever-after with her husband and two wonderful children in Oregon.

    I've now read all five of the Nasci books (plus the short story) and have rarely been so caught up in a series. Ina's long journey is an odyssey worthy of Homer, and her final quest becomes an obsession not unlike Melville's white whale. Rarely has an author so completely created such a complex, mullti-faceted, and layered world, all the while anchoring it in the familiar and everyday surroundings of the Pacific Northwest. At the end of this final book in the series Ms. Fike teases there might be additional books following Ina's adventures. I sincerely hope this is true. In the meantime, I'll have to content myself with reading the books again. Thank you, Ms. Fike, for this wonderful escape from the pandemic through earth, air, fire, water -- and lightning!

    Reviewing this final book in the series would lead to too many spoilers, so I'll just say that Ina's journey toward maturity has had quite a steep learning curve. It takes more than good intentions to land in the right place .... This is a wonderful series. Very well written. Fascinating. Intriguing. Such a refreshing change from the usual tropes. Ina is quirky and naive, goodhearted and smart with a very strong independent streak that tends to get her in trouble. I loved the world building. I wish there were shepherds. The planet certainly needs them! I wish I was one! I'd love to read more of her story - she has many adventures ahead of her!

    So, rookies makes mistakes. Except sometimes a mistake can be of such proportions that forgiveness is not a viable option. Especially when an aughur dies as a result of a series of mistakes you made.
    That is the result Ina faced. On top of all that guilt, she no longer can hold any pith. No pith, no magic.
    That is until the storm struck.
    This last book in the nature wizard quintet really is sobering in context of having to face the consequences of your deeds.
    So, can Ina?
    Soaring in Air may be a shortish novella in the series but it is never less a humdinger packed with a couple of nasty surprises.
    Enjoy.

    I enjoyed this addition. Ina makes some real growth and improvements, and I loved to see her step into that. The story had me hooked the whole time, and I'm excited to see where it goes next.

    I just read all five books, and despite an incredible premise and epic potential, the whole series just fell flat. There was very little character growth, and what growth there was ended up reversed. There is no "journey". I kept waiting for the change to happen but it never did. The character remains impulsive and headstrong and does not learn from her mistakes, the characters that hate her still hate her and everyone else stays lukewarm and nobody makes an effort to work together. The shepherds give us little reason to like them outside of the "fighting the good fight" mentality, and Ina never finds a place to belong. She beats the bad guy with the mentor who wants to bind her and boom, story over.

    Even her relationship with Vincent seems stagnant, and with the way she treats him, it's a wonder he sticks around. I really did love the premise, so I debated on 3 stars, but it was just too basic and unfulfilled to justify.
